I like it (I think)... the top (where the turn signal is) looks TOO black. I am guessin you took the orange reflector thing off, eh?
I think I could quickly grow to like that mod.
Do you have any pics with the lights turned on (and also the turnsignals turned on too)??
I'd luv to see those.
wRx14pSi 03-20-2002 04:13 PM

great mod since its Free.
makes the car look so much better
2k2 03-20-2002 05:04 PM

I wanna do it SOO bad im scared as hell ill screw up though. What kind of paint did you use to paint it and how long did you have to make it for?

Also, have you had any condensation in your headlight at all?

Thanks

Bryan

Oh, I think he might. Soon enough. I hope not though.
jasona 03-21-2002 12:07 AM

i used "flat black high temp engine enamel" from walmart. cooked about 6-7 minutes at 225 degrees. i was afraid id screw it up too (like i said we screw every do it yourself mod up at least once) but this is really easy, u shouldnt have any problems at all.

when i took those pics there was no condensation, but tonight some formed in the passenger side light, drivers side seems fine. i didnt really use anything to reseal it, i just stuck it back together and cooked it again and hoped it would melt enough to reseal, apparantly it didnt :( probably tomorrow afternoon im gonna take it back out, open it up wipe up all the moisture and reseal it, and this time ill use some silicone caulk. that *should* fix it. :)
wrxlvr 03-21-2002 11:42 AM

^^^^ Look! I'm the headlight mod prophet  Jasona, I love that badge in white. Mines blue right now, but I have a feeling it's about to change color. Sorry to hear about your lights :( Hope the caulk fixes it.
wrxmontao!! 03-21-2002 01:22 PM

thanks for the pictures....I thought people were joking when they said cook it in the oven:eek: ...now I have the courage to do it could you post the rest of the pics or post them somewhere so we can see them..this is going to be one of my first mods (I have a silver wrx) but I will probably do it a little be lighter black. Could you let us know if you fix the condenstaion problem..thanks :)
bjteel 03-21-2002 02:27 PM

After you put it together you should have cooked it longer. Did mine for 5 minutes apart, snapped 'em together, then another 7 minutes.

Installed the lights on the car in the pouring rain, still no condensation.;)
WRX Pilot 03-22-2002 04:03 AM

Use FLAT Black paint too!

I did this MOD too. Took a total of 2 hours to complete. I didn't let the paint dry long enough and got a couple of little spots where the chrome came through but other than that it went great. I used a little black silicon to make sure I got a good seal. And the oven trick works great!
Hazdaz 03-22-2002 07:45 AM

WRX PILOT: Why don;t you post some pix (and anyone else thats done this). The more I hear about it, the more interested I am in doing thismod.
Stealthbmbr 03-22-2002 10:33 AM

There is another thread on this if you do a search. It has 5 or 6 pages of great information from peaple who have done this mod.
wrxlvr 03-22-2002 10:49 AM

There are TONS of pics of this mod. Even some painted body color.
IggDawg 03-22-2002 12:38 PM

I'd like to up my post count by telling everyone to take a look in the "New Age" forum and find a thread under the same name as this. The one STEALTHBMBR ( the guy who stole my car) is referring to is there and it has a ton of info and every possible variation of this mod.

1st thing is to take out the headlight (duh!) to do this, first take out the grill, there are several clips on the backside of it, u can get to them by popping your hood. then un clip them with a screwdriver or something.
next take out the "cheeks" on both sides of the grill, there are 3 clips on each "cheek" u must pry the center part up them the whole thing will come out, after u take out these 3 clips there are two other little clip thingys on the bottom of each "cheek" but these should disconnect when u pull on them. if not just push em down while u pull.
next the headlights. there are 3 bolts on each headlight, one on the top and 2 on the front. if i remember correctly they are 10mm. remove thse, "work" the headlights around a bit and they will come out. really easy!
this is what the car should look like when youve completed this step:

okay now youre gonna "cook" the headlights to get the goo warm enough that u can pull them apart. a heat gun or blow dryer or any other means of delivering heat also works, but i used an oven. i cooked the 1st one for about 7-8 minutes, but the second one only needed 5-6 minutes cuz the oven was warmed up. i really dont think u can "over" cook them, unless u get it REALLY hot or leave it in there REALLY long. i cooked mine at 225-250 degrees (the numbers are worn off of my ovens knob so i cant tell u exactly)

here is one of them going into the oven:

when its "done" enough the goo is gooey, take them out (careful theyre hot!) and pull them apart. there are little clips around the edge of the light, when we did it my friend pulled it apart, while i went around and used a flathead screwdriver to pry off all the clips.

here it is being pulled apart:
[IMG]http://www.i-club.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=1658063[/IMG]

once the headlight is "open", u can remove the chrome trim piece (the piece that u will be painting) and remove all the little plastic bulb covers from it. theres are clips (clips clips everywhere!) on the backside of the trim piece to hold the bulb covers on, just squeeze them together they will come off. after u get them apart u will want to tape off anything u dont want painted on the trim ring (i painted the whole thing so i didnt tape)

here is the whole disassembled mess on the table (btw peeps taste good ;) )

find somewhere to paint and lay something down to paint on top of that u dont mind getting paint on (unless u LIKE the outline of your headlights on your garage floor  ) i used a spare piece of MDF i have laying around, newspaper will work.

this shows the pieces ready to paint, and shows exactly what the pieces to be painted will look like:

alright now start painting! in case some of u dont know how to spraypaint, hold the can about 6 inches away and sweep (not too slow, not too fast) from side to side. it should make a "psshh psshh psshh" not a steady "psssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh" work with light coats at first, to give the paint time to stick to the smooth surface of the trim ring. i ended up doing about 6 coats, just cuz i was doing really light coats at the beginning to make sure i didnt get any runs.

here they are getting painted:

once u have a nice solid even color, let them dry, but give them plenty of time. pick them up still wet and youll get a fingerprint on them, and it wont be fun getting rid of it! i chose to put a hot spotlight on them to speed the drying process.

here they are drying:

now put the headlights back together. before u do that though, make sure u wipe all the moisture off everything thats gonna be inside of the headlight, or u will be asking for problems with condesation. do it in the reverse order u took it apart. put the bulb covers back in, i chose to leave the orange blinker cover out, but u can put it back if u want. then put the ring into the clear lens 1st, THEN stick it to the big black headlight assembly. if u try to do it the other way (put the ring onto the black assembly, then stick the lens on top of that) it wont line up as easily. it most likely WONT push together enough to re-clip the clips around the edge just yet, but thats okay, were about to take care of that. BE CAREFUL for this entire reassembly process, if u scratch the rings chrome will show through again and youll have to paint again.

here they are back together:

now... cook it again, for the same amout of time as same temperature as before. after its been heated again, u will be able to push the headlights together enough to re-clip all the clips around the edge. make sure u push it as tight as possible, to help avoid any condensation. at this point it might be a smart idea to take some silicone caulk or some other sealant and smear it into the seam around the headlight, just to be on the safe side.

here it is being re-cooked:
jasona 03-23-2002 04:03 AM

now all thats left is to put your car back together :p ! do it in reverse order of how u took it apart. put the headlights back in (this will be difficult, i find it easier 1st set the bottom in if u put the top of the headlight in 1st it will never work, then line up the little post on the bottom outer edge of the headlight with the hole it goes into in the fender, then wiggle and work it around till the bolt holes line up) re-install the 3 bolts in each headlight, re-install the "cheeks" with (hopefully) all the clips that u took out of it, i lose one every time i take it apart  , then re-install the grill by lining up all the clips on the back of it and pushing it back hard enough to make them "clip" youre done!

heres the finished pic:
