I need an All-Season AND Auto-X tire.

I was going for Potenza S-03's, but they are kinda pricey. Is there anything out there that is a little (read: A LOT) bit cheaper? I need something that will have a good tread life and is good in all weather. Tire size needed is 215/40/17

If you're planning on doing AutoX a lot, get separate tires - I got my ST115 within a week of my AutoX school, went for 4 events (3 of them in 2 weekends), and my tires definitely would have lasted longer had I not AutoX them. Now granted that I didn't give them a proper worn-in, but still...
You could go for the usual suspect, Dunlop SP5000. Just that in general, if you plan on doing a few AutoX, it is still a lot better to have a separate set of tires.

Azenis are 'OK' in the rain as long as they have tread and you remember to take it easy (Ie 65mph or lower).
Do you need something that runs in snow too or just rain? A good tire may be the TA/KDW. There are some people that run on it and it comes in a variety of sizes... but again... not that cheap.
There's just not a great selection out there (IMHO) in this arena where cheap and good go together.
Just save up your pennies....

16" WRX Takeoffs (16" x 6.5") - $75/ea at TireRack ($300)
205/55-16 Falken Azenis - $86/ea at Discount Tire Direct ($344)

Including shipping, you're looking at around $750 for the whole set that you can put on and take off at events... or run in the good weather season.
Yes, a set of wheels and tires for a whole $50 more compared to just running the S03's. :)
Now, unless you have upgraded brakes that the WRX wheels won't fit, I would selection option 2 if I were you.
One thing you didn't mention is what's on your car now and their condition. You may be able to sell them and recoup some of your money. :)

What about the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Seasons? They're pricy, but all of the articles I've read say they offer the highest performance of any all-season tire.

I did some research a while ago, and decided that the BFG KDWS will most likely be my next all-season (used for winter) tires. They seem to offer the best dry performance, apart from the insanely expensive Michelins, and should still be good enough for the mild winters we have here.
There seems to be some confusion about the BFG tires:
KD = dry (summer)
KDW = dry + wet (summer)
KDWS = dry + wet + snow (all-season)
The Sumitomo HTR+ are also very popular, and highly rated at Tirerack. Unlike the KDWS, they are available in 17" sizes that fit our cars.

That's really strange, TheWRX, I was about to ask if anyone knew anything about the Sumitomo HTR+. They're $93 a pop and they have terrific reviews on Tire Rack. Anyone have experience with these?

The Sumitomos are a good tire. Forgot about them.. and they may fit your needs.
As far as the takeoffs... well, you're already getting a new set of wheels, so use your stockers (I assumed you sold them) and buy some Falken Azenis for auto-x and buy some Sumitomos for your street/all season duty.
The Sumos do howl under cornering but offer some good grip. There's a guy that has a 12 second Talon that auto-xes on them, and he's also quick.

nt450s make a great all season tire...if you take them for what they are you'd agree with me. They are all seasons with a m+s rating.

Thanks Gonz, I really respect your opinions. I've already got April 27th marked on my calendar for MBCA. :D Hopefully I'll catch you at some other Auto-Xes as well. Maybe you'll let me ride with you some time. ;)

Here, play around with this tire calculator:

A 215/40-17 tire is not optimum because your speedo will be 4.4% too fast. At 60mph, you'll actually be doing 57.3 (in other words, you'll have shorter gearing... you'll run out of 1st and 2nd faster... good for accelleration, bad for top end)
However, a 215/45-17 would only be 1% too fast... At 60, you're actually doing 59.4. That's very acceptable.
For comparison, 225/45-17's are .4% too slow meaning at 60, you're actually doing 60.2. That's as close to perfect as you'll get for any plus-sized tires on Subarus. :)

Your solution is to sell those 17's, buy some RS rims used ($400) and 215-45-16 Azenis ($400) and WRX wheels used with RE92's on them ($400). If you're lucky enough to find some Azenis on RS wheels for sale used, they'll be $500-600 and you'll be ahead.

Good advise. This is the route I am going, except with Yokahama AVS ES100 for a little quieter ride and longer life that the Azenis, although I'll be compromising on grip.
The Yokos are $77 each in 205/55-16 (they don't come in 215 width, and I haven't found for sure that the 225s will fit on the OEM wheels OR under the fenders of the WRX wagon with stock suspension.) The OEM take-off wheels are $79 each, and mount/balance was free getting both from The Tire Rack. I forget what shipping Ryan quoted me, but the wheels and tire only come to $624.
The OEM take-offs are not on the site anymore, but call or email for a quote.
I plan to use this setup for auto-X and summer driving, and my other OEM wheels with the RE92 for winter. Not many road miles in the summer, as I drive the MGA whenever possible.
