Rollcages With Rear Seats part 1

Rollcages With Rear Seats
Does anyone know any roll cages or bars that allow the use of the rear seats. I am really interested in the JSpeed setup, but can't find anyone that sells it in the US. Pics would also be nice, lets see em!

I haven't researched it, but intuitively it seems like a pretty bad idea :) Are you talking about putting people back there or just stuff?

You could always get something bolt-in and remove it when you weren't using it but I suspect that would get old fast.

This question has been asked many many times in the past and the overwhelming response has been don't. A cage is dangerous enough for an unhelmeted and unharnessed driver; I don't even want to think about what would happen to rear passengers.

I did briefly look into it. Bolt on parts might work, where you detach parts of it to clear out the back. While detached it's probably not good protection but would work for around town.

As for a cage built without cross members that destroy back seat space: cage builders I didn't really trust said they might be able to do it -- cage builders I do trust including some of the best in the nation said no way would they ever put their names and reputations to it. For non-bolting cages, the conclusion was do it right and end up losing use of the back seat, or don't do it at all.

What about Cusco or STi? OR are they more of a bling cage?
jam69007 08-29-2005 01:15 AM

bolt in cages like the cusco=bling. bolt in cages r gay.

so since the Cusco cage is bling AND bolt in, does that make it gay bling???

Once you get to the point that you need a cage to pass tech at the events you are going to, you have a race car, not a street car. You can still drive your race car on the street, I know a few people who do, but it's still a race car on the street. And when you have a cage, you must at all times wear at least a 5pt harness properly buckled.

(and if you read "pass tech at events" and that doesn't apply to you, then YOU DO NOT NEED A CAGE!)
RB5 Clone 08-29-2005 10:16 AM

Why are you caging the car? What events you running, etc? Without this info, it's hard to do anything but conjecture (not that anybody on this board would EVAR do that!)

Any cage that's worth a dang will have a big fat X between the main hoop and rear strut towers, which pretty much eliminates passengers. If there's room for people, you ain't got a good cage. Take yer pick.

Until I hear a good reason to have passengers riding in the back of a caged car, there's only one word to say: NO

 another one of these. Please don't cage your car with the cusco bolt together, bent in the wrong places, crap.

Cause that's what is standard practice in caging rally spec Subarus as approved by FIA, CARS, NASA, Rally America, etc. I'm not an engineer, just a car owner/builder, driver and co'driver. IE, have tested this type of cage the hard way several times and the Xes have worked so far.

Cages braced with something other than a big X between main hoop and top of rear strut towers may well be the norm in road race applications and/or in other cars than Subarus, natch.

Gotchya. Our Subaru cage for T2 does not have the X and the cage shop (who builds quite a few cages for SCCA world challenge cars) believes that it just adds weight without offering any addition chassis stiffening. We did get a rear strut tower bar put in for chassis stiffening.

Ever sat in the back seat of a caged car? It's downright disturbing... and that's with padding.

yep, you guys dont hit objects about 10-24 inches in diameter w/the side/rear quarter of the car very often.

I take it you are referring to vertical cellulose-intensive objects known as "trees" ? ;)

According to Travis, trees are about 90% air. Which is a good thing, as I'm sure we passed right through one on SS14 at Ojibwe.

i didnt know the STi came w/the ability to phase through solid objects. thats way too cool.

Yes, though I believe it's a special Option Variant. And you have to use the side skirts with it.

Hey scooby_x,

There isn't a rule of cage building that that car does not break. That "wierd design" ensures that the roof can still cave in, the fronts don't protect you in a side or front impact, etc etc etc.

Scary cage. Its only function is to crack open the skulls of rear seat passengers in a head-on accident (as the car stops, their heads will slam into that "harness bar" portion of the cage.

While we are on the subject (sorry to semi-hijack) who here might have cage specs for WRC. (STi/Evo builds) I have looked at these, and decided its what I want. (and it works for two people in case we end up doing Targa next year)

That gold cage only works to protect the occupants if you install the obligatory "F16 Fighter Pilot Shift Kn0b"

I say install a weld-in cage AND put passengers back there. Buck the trend, screw what these people say! Just get your lawyer to draft up a quick release form and make your passengers sign it. Then they'll contort themselves and monkey swing while you drive to the movies. If they start getting annoying, just mash the brakes real quick- they'll get real quiet real quick.

Screw what other people say- don't follow the sheep- think for yourself!!!

Cage + Passengers in the back seat = GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!!!
i didnt know the STi came w/the ability to phase through solid objects. thats way too cool.
I dunno about "ability to phase through" solid objects...from what I've seen, STIs DO have quite remarkable abilities to "bulldoze straight through" or "flatten" or "graze" or perhaps "bounce off" those pesky 10% cellulose dealies....

Dave G

PS -- if trees are indeed only 10% cellulose, then I'm super glad they're not 100%. Hitting one of those would really HURT!
