where can i get the blue tint headlight bulbs. part 1

mike_b49431 11-22-2005 10:33 PM

where can i get the blue tint headlight bulbs.
I was wondering if there is a good headlight bulb out there for a 2005 Subaru Impreza RS that has a nice blue tint to it. I am having a hard time trying to decide which type to get. Anyone know of a graphic kit for a crystal grey, almost looks goldish silver, but anyways, I just want something simple on it....I'm new to upgrades and add-ons and all that to cars. Basically wondering what all i can get for this car, i'm having a hard time looking for anything for a 2005 impreza on the internet. Also anyone near silverthorne, co?

Let me know what i could do to this thing, i don't want all the engine mods to make it faster or anything...just looking for cosmetic type upgrades....

thanks,
mike

there is not.

blue coatings reduce the amount of visible light. it might look "OMG ROXORS" to have blue headlights, but they are WORSE for visibility, especially in inclement weather.

go to daniel stern for more info, i'll get a link.

(with the 'good' blue lights you'll end up paying more for less. not worth it)

if i were you, i'd do more tasteful mods or mods that enhance the feel of the car, like suspension or steering or shift kits. if you don't want performance, that's fine... but there are way better ways to make a car aesthetically more pleasurable to drive/look at than the typical ricer/ebay/ghetto-ification mods.

well if you don't think the blue tint is any good, then what about the sylvania silverstars. I was thinking about getting some nice rims for it. any ideas, prices?

thanks,
mike
Handsdown 11-22-2005 11:11 PM

sylvania silverstars use a thin blue coating that filters out the yellow of a traditional halogen bulb. it makes white light, not blue.

i'd still steer away from them, they put out less usable light than other bulbs in their price range.

rims? umm... anything that isn't chrome. might i suggest some rota's from www.subydude.com

lots of styles and great prices. well liked by the subaru community.

i know you want your car to be noticed, but there are better ways of getting noticed than big wheels and blue lights.

Check out PIAA. . Ive tried the Silverstars ( blow quick ) and PIAA. . blast them 55 watts =120. has Xtra technogoly. Super White!!!

Besides, blue headlights give the connotation of rice.

But, ya know, I don't think you care.
Handsdown 11-22-2005 11:41 PM

hahaha it's a 100k rice fight!!!!

yeah, blue bulbs are kinda ricey.

mike_b49431 11-22-2005 11:59 PM

LOL..ok, I'm new to this forum and everything....but someone define a "ricer". I have no idea what that is but i'm getting an idea that it's not a good thing...

rice was originally a racist term for the import tuning thing back when domestics didn't know about japanese motorsport... it also means "race inspired cosmetic effects" meaning **** that goes on your car to make it look fast but not go fast. kinda like what you were describing you wanted.

but yeah. i think there are tasteful kinds of rice, others would disagree with me. here's a picture of my RS to give you an idea.

Not a WRX? Rice. :)
Handsdown 11-23-2005 01:19 AM

 exactly the kind of sentiment that any newage RS owner has to deal with.

by the way, i have an RSB, kumho 712's, short shifter, and springs that make my car more enjoyable to me than a stock wrx- plus i save lots of money on gas. the only reason i'd need more power is if i was concerned about beating other people with accelleration. which isn't something i'm concerned about. i drive for me:)
DeusExMachina 11-23-2005 01:48 AM

I know...I had an '02 BRP RS. At least it was a color not offered on WRXs. Guy hit me from the front (well I hit him, but his insurance paid) so I got a WRX aluminum hood. I took a long look and thought it was stupid..and I wanted a car that could get out of its own way. Always felt like "I don't have a WRX, and I don't have a GC8...I just pretty much have a base model 2002 Impreza."

So I have a car that cost a tenth of it and I don't know where all the money from the sale went. Its a work in progress, doesn't handle as well as the RS with v7 STi suspension (Legacies are porkers, Konis aren't on yet), but I definitely like the freedom of not having a warranty. Soon it will be contained in a 2500 lbs '93 Impreza, a chassis which I enjoyed more.

At least your car looks good.

<--Another old schooler and former 02rs owner gone GC8

I have nothing to add to this thread :D

If your looking for cosmetics. Check out a nice body kit. If your looking for minor performance, get a intake and a header back exhaust. If your looking to make a fast car, trade it in. If your looking for something to be a little aggressive and to look nice. You got the right car, just start looking in the members gallery of cars you like and start asking questions about what they did. Only way to learn is to ask and read read read. Lots off good information under the search function.

If I was you, I would buy some rims, get a nice street able strut/spring combo and then move on from their.

The suspension mods alone will change the way you look at your scoob!

That lip maks your car faster huh. RICE

Why are your lights brighter? Define brighter.
Putting a 80W or 100W bulb with blue coating is going to seem brighter than 55W/60W stock bulbs.
Also unless you correctly relay those lights, you will burn up the connectors and wiring.

Working at a dealership in the service dept, we had a kid with a brand new car, complained because the lights flickered at night. We pop the hood and see burnt wiring from the headlight switch to the headlight bulbs. Pull out the bulbs, cheapo 80/110W blue lights. A $1500 estimate later on a NEW car, and the kid drove out without headlights. Said he'd fix it himself.

Ding ding ding!

Blue is at the bottom of the brightness spectrum. Wouldn't common sence make you notice that it is prolly not the right tint to use if your looking for something thats gonna be brighter? Blue doesn't do that good of a job contrasting things like street lights. I have a feeling my weaker watt yellow stars would be 3x brighter then some of these blue tint bulbs people buy...
njskatchmo 11-25-2005 11:51 AM

Well does anyoen have any suggestions for better than stock headlights?
PumaTurbo 11-25-2005 12:56 PM

Osram Silverstars, PIAAs, or auxilary lighting.

Lets suppose I believe you, but then lets suppose I asked you why HID's emit a blue light, what do you suppose your answer would be?
cfvwtuner 11-25-2005 05:30 PM

HID's are a totally different type of light source. A regular bulb works by what really is resistance. Electricity flows through a coiled filiment and it glows, exactally the same as why the coils on your toaster oven or stove glow red.
A HID is a essentially a spark. The spark is focused and creates light. It is a better white than a filiment bulb.
Do some research before you some out with sarcastic comments.
Mulder 11-25-2005 06:10 PM

OEM HIDs do not emit blue light, they are in the 4100-4300K color temp range which is white. What you are probably referring to is OEM projector HIDs such as those in BMW's and Audis which can appear blue when seen from an off-center angle. This is due to the optical properties of the projector causing color distortion at the beam edge, NOT because the bulbs themselves are blue. When seen from straight on, those HIDs are white.
There are aftermarket HIDs with higher color temperatures, anywhere from 6000-10000K, and yes those will produce light that is more blue/purple (and has more glare) than standard HIDs. Using these makes no more sense than the blue-coated halogen bulbs.
DoctorNick 11-27-2005 07:59 PM

Zing!
WRXRallyBlue 11-27-2005 08:15 PM

He didn't say he was looking for brighter bulbs, just blue ones, like hids. You can get them at walmart, best buy, ebay, whatever. Almost anywhere. They will be dimmer than your stock bulbs, though. I would agree that they are ricey, too, but if you like them then go for it.

If you're looking for graphics try searching google for car graphics and you should find something you like.

If you're looking for body kits, lowering springs and stuff like that, there are a lot of options for Subarus these days, which is nice - especially if your car is a sedan. Try searching on this site for those or just browse the internet vendors for yourself.

You got off easy, mike, people on this forum love to flame ;)

Good luck and happy modding!
