I still see the SUBARU

I just debaged my wrx. I dunno if the ghost lettering stands out more cuz it's WRB but it's deffinitely there. Is there any way to get rid of this? I used goo gone (yellow bottle) to get rid of the glue, then waxed it like four times. didn't work. I currently have in my garage 3m medium cut compound and swirl remover. should I use any of these and risk hurting the clear coat or just live with it?

When I debadged my trunk I used a hairdryer to get the letters off and to "round up" most of the glue. Afterwards A LOT of GooGone was used to get 99% of the "ghosting". Then I used the paint "scrubber" stuff in a small area...washed the car, re-waxed the entire trunk, and I was done. Still good 20K miles later.
Infact I am gonna go do the rest of my trunk (the WRX impreza part) :D

Let me go check what the technical name is..."clear coat body scrub".... basically a safe alternative to swirl remover (if you don't wanna use that)

much appreciated ;)

well, I just "finished" (ie. given up)... I started debadging the WRX IMPREZA sign at 30K miles... now I have a shadow behind where it was. Probably the other paint faded, or I am just not trying hard enough. Tomorrow I'll give it another run down with the body scrubber.

meguiars has a special paint cleaner, that you can use, the paint shouldn't be faded very much. i'm not sure what the paint cleaner stuff is. gimme a bit and i'll find itfor you. i know they make some special stuff for it though (i used it and it works like a charm!).

Used "Goo Gone" and it worked great

yea but goo gone can be a bad thing, just be light if you use that otherwise it will take some of the clear coat along with the gooo:alien:

no. It happened to me yesterday. I see the clear coat is a little dull in the area that I used the goo gone. but wait, maybe it's cuz I waxed right after I applied it without washing it off. Now I wanna try getting off the wax and trying it out.
How am I gonna get 5 coats of wax off? :alien:

After debadging and goo-goning, I had to use Turtle rubbing compound followed by Meguier's scratch-x and then a coat of wax to make it all look kosher.
| Dtdunk | 11-24-2003 10:41 PM |
Try Using a clay bar. I have a black WRX which are more notorious for ghosting, so I took the letters off, used 3M adhesive remover, then clay bar, than meguirs scartch-x, then a clay bar, and then waxed. I think the clay bar was cruicial becuase it really helps to take layers of crap off your paint. Perhaps try that?

problem solved!!! :D
1. washed trunk
2. goo gone to get rid of coats of wax
3. wash goo gone off
4. dry
5. used meguiars mirror glaze profesional swirl remover 2.0
6. wash
7. wax ( two coats)
8. step back and check out the ghost letter free shine

I did mine at 35k, and it is always there :) don't worry it WILL come back :) I did the same procedure you did, then paid to have it done, then had a friend who is a car detailer do it all again, it always comes back after enough miles :) I have 60k now :o !!! I can't belive it its a 2002

use dawn dishwashing soap to remove wax and grime in the future, trust me it works a heck of alot better and cleans the car while you're at it. dawn breaks down and disenegrates all the crap rather then just "loosening it from the surface"
goo-gone was the right choice for removing the stickery crap though. :)

heh, how fortunate that this thread was right up top. I took off the letters this weekend, but was ill-prepared to deal with all that leftover gray stuff. Got the worst of it off, and spent about 2 hours, rubbing at the adhesive sort of like taking rubber cement off? Whew. Slow going, and then I got blisters  so, I think I'll pick up some goo-gone because right now my trunk faintly reads "BAPU" hehe

Goo Wipes

I dunno if you guys thought about this, but turtle wax goo wipes work perfectly for just about anything. Any auto parts store sells them.

actually, I did try some wipes, the "bug/tar remover" ? man, that stuff is useless! I was very dissapointed, actually. although the wipes are quite useful for just keeping in the trunk for spot touch-ups, I don't find that they help much in getting really sticky stuff off. and actually, then there's this slippery residue all over everything that just makes your scrubbing even more futile!

If u still have the glue on, just keep rubbing with goo gone. I know it's tough to get off but it will come off. heat what's left of the glue with a heat gun or blow dryer to loosen it up. use your nails even, but be careful! If it's just the ghost lettering showing up, try the steps that I listed earlier in the thread. Works like a charm ;) that meguiars stuff is great! and I don't think it will come back at all. I can't notice any signs that the SUBARU was ever there! If it comes back it'll be pretty freaky:alien:
