I've never seen an autocross like that - it looks like he's just playing around with the cones. There's no way I'd race there. There's not enough room between the curbs. That would sure ruin you day to slide into a curb.
The autocrosses I've been to, have a clearly marked course that doesn't often cross itself. The speeds are quite a bit higher, around 20 - 55 MPH, and there's a lot more room that that.
Here's a short video clip from one of the Autocrosses I've been to. This is Ginowrx in the video. (I'm not that cool - my car pushed through that corner)

Cool second clip there, Phread. :)
The first clip is a Japanese (I believe) competition called Gymkana (I have the original video that I downloaded a long time ago called "wrx gymkana.avi"). IIRC it was judged rather then an outright competition of driving a course.

Nice handbrake turn in that second video - I gotta practice that before next season. What class was that WRX? Does it have a bigger rear bar?
| Lafora | 12-10-2001 08:17 AM |
that first vid resembles those Japanese Gymkhana that i see on VCDs once in a while.
except they ahve a HUGE parking lot to run it in. this one looks pretty small..
too small in fact.

Autocross is what Gymkhana evolved into here in the states. I have an uncle that used to Gymkhana competitively in the 'old' days. :)

No mods other than 18" wheels and a crazy driver. It also helped that the tires that Gino is running have a 300 tread wear rating (my kumo V700 are rated at 50).
Gino is a great driver, I almost regret talking him into ESP...:D He's going to be a tough competitor next year.

yeow! that was one hell of a corner in that second video, i dunno if its faster to brake hard an shift into first, but the handbrake/drift certainly looked cooler!

No handbrake was used on the second video. He described what he did in this thread - http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=113279 Imprezer said it was called a Scandinavian Flick, but it looks to me like it's pretty close to tail braking.
Gino was also the fastest WRX of the day, (out of 6 that raced) so it's not a bad way to get through the corner.

So Gymkana is just a tighter course with more manuevers?
Is there a Gymkana type race with SCCA? Now when you goto a local SCCA do they seperate the cars by engine size? If so what would a 2.5 4 cyl go agaisnt since there is not really any other car with a 2.5 4 cyl. I think the closet thing is the cav and sunfires but only 2.4.
Also any more videos? I think I may give this a try maybe get rid of some of that road rage :)

I'm pretty sure there's no Gymkana in the SCCA.
But if you're looking for what cars are in the same class as the 2.5RS, and the WRX, check out this link.
http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/Lists/2002/stockc.html
The WRX is in D stock, and the Impreza 2.5 RS is in G stock. (assuming the car is stock)
And if you're looking for the class by car make, look here

funscooby, you just need to go to an event and watch. Actually, don't go and watch, go and sign up to compete. Describing an auto-x really doesn't do it justice. You just have to go do it to understand how much fun it is - you'll be addicted immediately. I used to think that I pushed my car hard when I was blasting down my favorite back roads, but at my first auto-x I pushed my car harder than I ever had before. It's amazing how much you can learn about driving when you don't need to worry about getting nailed for speeding or sliding off the road into a rock wall or a tree.
Anyway, here are a couple more videos:
(1) http://www.submariner.org/thepno95/Video%20clips/8-5-01%20Autocross/JoeZanavich.mpg (3.6MB) - This is my buddy Joe's SCCA ITE-class road race Mustang. It has a 500+hp 331ci stroker - strong enough to smoke slicks through 2nd gear. :D This video encompasses about half the course.
(2) http://www.submariner.org/thepno95/Video%20clips/8-5-01%20Autocross/Legacy_bumper_cam_no_sound.mpg (5.2MB) - This is a bumper cam shot of my Legacy running through the course on the same day. Unfortunately the audio capture was all hosed up, so I had to capture it without sound. Oh, by the way, this was the first event at which I beat Joe's Mustang. :)
This was a non-SCCA event, so the course design is more open than you'll see at most SCCA events.

understeer? well, a little in the big carocel.
For the most, not on that course. More over steer. It was a slick course cause of the light sand on the course. There is a sand quary next door and wind was blowing sand on the course.

It's a X10 Anaconda camera, taped to the side of the back door.
Here is a link to where you can get the camera.

GREAT QUALITY VIDEO! I am suprise of the cameras quality. (not your driving :D ) what are you recording onto? how do you have it wired up?
| Patrick L | 12-13-2001 01:46 PM |
Well let me give you the details. My setup is accually 2 cameras. The first is the camera over the back set(see below).

I run a output for audio from the C-VHS to a VCR and is straped to the seat of the back seat. I connect the X10 to the VCR for video and use the C-VHS camera for sound cause the mic on the X10 picks up way too much sound. So all you would hear is a bunch of wind noise. I use a inverter to supply AC power to the VCR and X10 camera. You can power the X10 with 12VDC. It comes with a power supply when you buy one, to convert AC to DC. If you had a DC powered VCR. Well you could power both off the 12vDC from the car.
