JDM folding plate holder! part 1

JDM folding plate holder!
I really like this idea, plated when you're slow, it folds up when going fast!

That is really cool. When I first read your post I thought it had something to do with cops not being able to see your plate while you are speeding.
kenchan 07-14-2003 12:14 PM

it looks good in the picture, but the drivers dont know how
it flaps up/down swinging and flapping while in slow traffic
and it looks broken.

they need to electronically control that angle so that
above 40mph a servo or something pulls i up.

hmmm interesting... I bet it wouldn't be that difficult to DIY something like that though...

Yea especially when they want like $100 for a piece of folding metal. I bet it can be done.
djerickd 07-14-2003 01:31 PM

nice and stealth!

Do it up and let us FMIC owners know! ;)

I'll mention it to Quantum Racing... see if they're interested in doing it as a small side project.
silverF4turbo 07-14-2003 02:10 PM

Cool idea... I'd want one
Ethan 07-14-2003 02:12 PM

Jeeze what a ripoff! I've seen this exact product for like $40 while I was in Japan.

GC8 guys this will not work on our cars due to the plate holder location and the big center post behind it. (I've already measured)
....Unless this is a different designe, but looks the same to me.
Band1t 07-14-2003 03:36 PM

I don't know how the fit would be, but this has been avaliable for the Miata for a while.

At $30, it would be a cheaper option if it does fit.

That'd be great if someone could fab one together. Not sure if my skills are up to snuff. But i might try to make a crude one this weekend.
theJohnson 07-14-2003 07:28 PM

i thought you were talking about an actual plate holder. they got cup holders, why not a plate holder too?
anyway, all that flapping kinda would suck at speeds where you would be between the license plate being up or down. and i wouldnt pay for that, i run no front plate with no problems.
Schleppy 07-14-2003 08:22 PM

Yeah, that is definately a Home Depot project...

The Miata guys have been doing it forever. There are tons of writeups on www.miata.net about DIY ones...
imprezive one 07-14-2003 08:44 PM

hmmm... to solve the flapping problem, if that even is a problem you could hook it up to some kind solenoid or switch that opens when you go over a certain speed. maybe that's overkill though for such a minimal thing.
superg 07-14-2003 09:38 PM

My solution
My solution to the front plate problem was to bend the top and bottom of the plate so it conforms to the shape of the upper bumper bar. I figure it is unlikely (though not impossible) that I'll get a ticket, as you can still read the plate. Keeps it out of the cooling stream.

I don't think a solenoid is really needed for this application - if you had spring loaded hinges with a high enough spring rate, it wouldn't flap around while sitting there, but when you got moving and the force was high enough, it would swing out of the way (you might have to play with spring rates to find out what works)

or you could move to a state which doesn't have a front plate...
dRu888 07-15-2003 01:51 AM

yah, if you could make the springs adjustable to be stiff or soft that would be totally cool
128d 07-15-2003 10:59 PM

I have seen people just cut there plates and put hinges on them.
DimSum22 07-16-2003 02:42 AM

Ha, Arizona, don't need a front license plate
128d 07-16-2003 03:00 AM

I just take my chances without one.
STi&LT1 07-16-2003 11:04 AM

I keep the plate under the seat, and a broken plate holder, if the cop asks, I just show it to him. If I park in DC i put the tag on the dashboard.

Dude, that's the best idea ever. But I gotta ask you, how many times has it worked/not worked for you?
Puckaveli 07-17-2003 12:09 PM

I saw a guy on Scoobynet that had two pnuematic rods that were regulated by a vacuum regulator. When he got on boost the license plate would swing up and out of the way of his FMIC.
128d 07-17-2003 12:18 PM

^ I wana see this. Thats pretty damn cool.
Adiliyo 07-17-2003 12:43 PM

and i came here thinking it was some kind of plate holder for the interior of your car...(you never know what weird stuff the japanese will come up with next.. )

still...kinda cool, but a flipping over rear one would be cooler :)
Jaxx 07-17-2003 02:58 PM

cool .. yet mondo illegal
