Just got a spoiler.. part 1

sandwi54 10-08-2005 03:48 AM

Just got a spoiler..
Yay the spoiler finally arrived and was installed today. Oh my god the trunk became so much heavier. When i was closing the it, it just fell down and almost clipped my hand.
One thing that sucked was when the mechanic installed the spoiler, he accidentally dropped two screws and two washers into the inside panel of the trunk lid. He fished for them for like half an hour and couldn't get them out, but we both knew that they would just fall out of the holes eventually. However, when I drove my car home the damn screws rattled like crazy and drove me nuts, so after i got back i kept shaking the trunk lid up and down and actually got both screws and one washer out. I couldn't get the last washer out but hopefully it'll just fall out some time in the future.

Which spoiler did you get? You probably need heavier torsion bars (trunk helper springs).
sandwi54 10-08-2005 04:03 AM

I got an aftermarket factory-style spoiler from spoilerdepot.com so it looks just like the factory one. I wanted to post pic but when i got back it was already 7pm and too dark. i'll take some pic after i wash my car tomorrow or sunday.
Yeah I think heavier torsion bars would help. Honestly though, the trunk is not as heavy as i thought it was. it's just that when i first closed it i wasn't used to the new weight, but now i am ok with it.

i dropped a bolt in my trunk when installing my spoiler. i just took off the hole lid (4 bolts) and then moved it around until the screw fell out

Thanks for the advice. I was just thinking about the same thing too.

Hey I'll trade you my torsion bars. I got an STI and went wingless, but kept the stock torsion bars. Without the wing my trunk is too light for the springs. I can probably put a watermelon on top of the lid and these springs will launch it no problem. lol

i have the orciari wing and with the trunk its about 45+ lbs but i LOVE the wing too much to part with it.... it is however, crazy heavy so I might be interested in those torsion bars. pics?

I don't have pics right now but PM me if you want to arrange a trade.

What spoiler did you get?
Silver '02 REX 10-09-2005 08:05 PM

He said he got an aftermarket factory style one.

STI or WRX style who knows?
Rickyh 10-10-2005 03:03 AM

hmmmm. I just ordered the s202 replica spoiler. I tried ordering it about two months ago but it was backordered everywhere. Maybe I'll be more successfull this time.
StealthfishWRX 10-10-2005 07:15 AM

um....what kind of spoiler did u get? and great on the spoiler, it gives the impreza alittle sest to it. And hope you get that last washer out. Oh and don't forget to post pics. ;)
mrjasey 10-10-2005 09:53 AM

your mechanic should have gotten the screws out, it is easy. he was just lazy.

all he had to do was take off the trunk and rattle it around to get them out.
PJAWRX03 10-10-2005 04:30 PM

This thread is great...I have a spoiler also...congrats and welcome to the club
sandwi54 10-10-2005 05:22 PM

Thanks! I got the screws and washers out myself. Sorry I was sick this past weekend (stupid flu!!!!) so I didn't have a chance to take a pic. I'll do it today after work and will post pic later tonite.

Sorry guys. Here are the pictures. My camera sucks. It's probably time to get a 5MP camera.

Look pretty good from the pics but you should have just found another SRR WRX owner that wanted to go wingless and keep everything genuine.

p.s.-Is it fiberglass
Xymox 10-13-2005 09:06 PM

Why do the 04 and 05s look so much more massive and bulky compared to the bugeyes? Strange observation (and little to do with the topic) :)
sandwi54 10-14-2005 02:08 PM

Yeah I actually tried to find a SRR owner but it's like impossible here. I think i probably have like the only SRR in my area. Everyone, and I really mean everyone, here drives either blue or silver. I don't really see even black or white on the road not mentioning red.

I am not sure what material it's made of, but it looks and feels exactly the same as the factory spoiler.
sandwi54 10-14-2005 02:10 PM

oh yeah i was reading the website and it says the spoiler is made of fiberglass. is that a good material?
Silver '02 REX 10-17-2005 08:24 PM

Most aftermarket spoilers are fiberglass. It is cheap, light, but can crack if stressed too much.
