Light bar mount - for sale?? part 1

Subie Gal 04-02-2001 05:16 PM

Light bar mount - for sale??

if i was to have the light bar mount i used on my RS made up...
who would be interested in buying one?
<IMG SRC="http://www.subiegal.com/IMAGES/New%20RS/phase%202%20front.jpg" border=0>

i would try to keep the costs under $100 but would also include the bolts, etc needed to drill through the bumper beam...

<IMG SRC="http://www.subiegal.com/IMAGES/New%20RS/light%20bar%20mount.jpg" border=0>

if there is interest... i'll get a quote on having them made up + parts + shipping and see what i can do for you guys.

so...
is there any interest?

Skirvdawg 04-02-2001 05:39 PM

Maybe some interest here, but a few questions first.

Does the light pattern bounce around at all? My current setup bounces a little bit and I'd like to eliminate it.

Second question...I should probably be able to tell from the pic, but does this mount to the body work directly as in requiring visible holes if it was removed?

If the price was right, I'd definitely be interested. It would have to be pretty good, though, to convice me to do away with the $150 install job I had done for my lights a few weeks ago, not that I'm real happy with it.
TeamSUBARU 04-02-2001 10:41 PM

Let us converge our resources and work together on this. I still have my light to mount as well.
byl-23 04-02-2001 10:50 PM

I am interested, but would rather have them for the lower light set only (if possible).

Bill
Subie Gal 04-02-2001 10:57 PM

Lower lights...
i would send out only the bar.. you drill the holes in the bar as you see fit...

so if you only want 1 set of lights.. measure and drill for 1...

if you want 2... measure and drill for 2...

in the picture you are lookin at of the mount, the grill is removed.. to show the bolts... when the grill is in place, and the light bar removed, you cannot tell that there was ever anything there...

more pics on my site. www.subiegal.com
RS page - mods...

what i think i can supply is the aluminum mounts themselves, measured and properly bent - and the big bolts to mount them to the car...

re: bouncing...
yes... a bit of light flutter... not enought to annoy or deter me... but to each their own... i do have a set of Hella stabilizers... i may set them up for the next rally... i think they are less than $10 so if the fluttering it too much for you, you could always purchase and attach those...

i am not offering this to make $.... merely to help you guys out as there seemed to be a lot of interest in this light bar set up...

so i'll be as honest and straightforward as i can..

CosmoTheCat 04-02-2001 11:24 PM

Just on a personal note... I took those dimensions and played a little bit. I also mounted mine a little differently, and I have no (0) flutter at all. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]
I'm not offering any service here. If you're interested in these things, talk to J. They're sturdy as heck.
omahasubaru 04-03-2001 05:36 AM

I'm interested in them. As long as they come in black and are basically the same set-up in your pics. I plan to add all 4 lights so this is a cheaper and less noticable alternative to the Rallispec light bar (which I really like too!).

Thanks,

Jon

Since I've been bugging you about these for a while I'll say that I might be interested.
Is this the beginning of a Subie Gal product line?

it would be cool if you could put em on and take em off without taking the drill to the car[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif[/img] i am sooo tempted to get this on my Black RS [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
it would be cool if you could put em on and take em off without taking the drill to the car
although you'd get a lot of bounce i suspect you could run a cotter pin through the end of an unthreaded bolt and then it as simple as pie to pop 'em off !

okay bad drawing but i think you get the point ...

yeah i see what you are talking about. the drilling in the RS is what sucks...[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif[/img] picky person i guess[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] i would love to have a phat rally light type bar on the front of the RS[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
Dustin 04-03-2001 08:57 AM

Yeah, I want a set. I've been meaning to get down to the shop you had your's built at. They aren't too far from me, but I'm lazy after work.

mykrrrr 04-03-2001 09:10 AM

If you put a support between the two mounts, it should stop the "bounce" That could be just bolted on so it would be just as easy to remove.

J - Did you drill through the bumper reinforcement & through the front fascia @ the same time??? My friend and I made some for his RS but we ended up mounting them on top of the fascia (grill between the mounts) because we couldn't see where to properly mount it in the position that you used.

thx

Subie Gal 04-03-2001 10:51 AM

hey guys...
the bar comes unpainted.. if you WANT me to paint them.. i can.. but that would be more $... and we are all trying to save $ here right?

drilling...
there are several layers of bumper beam...
you drill throught the top 2 and apply a spacer... so that when you tighten down the bolt, it does not squeeze them together... but tightens properly...

fluttering...
is not THAT bad at all!! i had a TON more w/my last mount set up.. i was just letting you know that there was a slight flutter.. these mounts are SOLID... good for 4 Rallye 1000's or 2 Rallye 4000's...

i will have some more details etc. tomorrow... again.. i wont bother unless there is enough interest...

STORER 04-03-2001 07:52 PM

Can you paint them Subie Gal yellow? Ha Ha HA.
I made mine out of aluminum stock and I have zero flutter. But Jamie's design is much simpler which is better. If you want to see mine I have pics in the members section. Just go to Ohio and I live in Mentor, I think I have two pics with the lights mounted. If any one wants a more detailed pic, feel free to PM me and I'll E-mail it to you. Like I said, Jamie's method is simpler, but my way might be better for some.

Steve

Hey j... I might be interested as well, but I have a quick question (I'm pretty sure it's been covered before, but I can't recall where)....

Do you need to notch the grille piece in order to fit it on with the mounts? Additionally, would you know if the WRX/Cusco grille piece will fit without mods?

Thanks!

MikeYOX 04-04-2001 02:39 AM

I am planning on a RS soon, it is back in the works since I decided to get another car.

I'll take one if you make them.
Fido 04-04-2001 04:13 AM

Me SG, me!
CosmoTheCat 04-04-2001 10:46 AM

No need to cut anything on the car. Grill, bumper, nothing.
WRXPRESS 04-07-2001 10:14 AM

so how many people are you looking for to make you sell this?
nkodemus82 04-07-2001 05:19 PM

Jamie- i PM'd you a while ago about these bad boys ir you remember... I'm definitely interested if you get them made...

Horatio - what did you do to make them more stable? What kind of 'dimension' playing did you do?

CosmoTheCat 04-07-2001 10:55 PM

Well Jamie & most everybody else have Hella 1000s which just use the hanging-bolt kind of mount. I put a set of 4000s on, and those have a 3.25" (or so) wide bracket that mounts to the car so you can adjust the aim without tools (as long as you only finger-tighten the screws). I made my brackets an inch wider and an inch longer. The 4000s are a little deeper (I believe) and I also have the hood deflector that sticks out a bit. When I mounted mine I bolted the top side at the back, through the bumper beam. I didn't go through both top and bottom at the back because I didn't want to bother with lining up holes properly. To keep the lights from fluttering I threw some lag screws in the bottom side, about three inches from the front. They screw into a layer of the bumper beam, and it's really quite solid. You can't see the holes/lag screws unless you get on your knees and look for them.

If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive way to mount a couple/couple pair of fog/driving lights, this is it. I didn't paint mine because, um, I was lazy and I have a silver car. That and I just don't care. I get TONS of looks all over the place. Aside from the lights and my Yakima rack my car is bone stock on the outside yet I see carloads of people staring all the time. If you don't want attention, don't put the lights on. If you like the attention, do it for sure. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

Being aluminum, they're light, really strong, and they won't rust.

J- you still going to make these for the people? I think you should. I only mention the dimentional difference because I think it might look silly having the mounting hardware for the 4000s hanging over the sides of the mount. They hang over on mine by like 1/16" or so each side... if I were to do it again I'd go 3.5" wide. You know what Pontiac says... "wider is better"

I'd be interested in these mounts (I'm lazy).

Or you could draw up some schematics and take pictures of the mounting process and sell those.

I really want a nudge bar though.
Subie Gal 04-09-2001 07:08 AM

not sure if i should make these or not...

it's not that easy to drill into the bumper beam unless you have some sort of experience w/this...

i dont want to be liable for guys/gals messing up their cars...

what do you guys think?

just supply the goods and the instructions and leave you to your own resources?

j. www.subiegal.com
remarcable 04-09-2001 09:30 AM

It seems there is alot of interest in this project. However, drilling into the bumper is not always an easy thing to do properly (I have two holes in the bumper for my current fog lights and I didn't really do a great job there). If I ever sell the car I am going to put a new front end on or lower the price considerably due to scratches and damage... so I am not really worried about drilling.

I don't think you would get rich selling these mounts, and it may be more hassle than it is worth to you getting the parts and shipping them out, tracking orders, quality control, support, etc etc

And there is also going to be that one person who manages to drill into an ABS sensor and blows the bags and then will want to sue you.

Personally, if I am drilling a hole into my bumper and I screw up then it is MY fault... but some people are just lawyer crazy these days.

Perhaps next time you have things apart adjusting your setup you could take some pictures of the inside of the bumper (showing the spacers, bolts, etc) and then some pictures of the actual mounts from different angles. Then you could probably cut and paste from your previous light bar posts and come up with an installation guide.

Then, after that is all together in web page format, stick it up on your site or the i-club mods page and name it the 'SubieGal Light Bar Mod.'

You wouldn't make any money off of it, and it would be some work getting all those pictures together... but you would have the satisfaction of knowing there are a ton of 'SubieGal Light Bar' modded Subarus running around out there.

I guess you could maybe even charge a couple dollars for the light bar instructions if they are really comprehensive. I'd probably send a few dollar's donation via paypal if everything works out perfectly.

WRXPRESS 04-09-2001 09:57 AM

Jamie,
I can understand your problems with watching your ass if someone messes their car up. The only thing I can suggest is you post EVERYWHERE installation at YOUR OWN RISK. You are not responsible for any damage done to the purchaser's vehicle and that your installation instructions are only a suggested method. You get the idea.
You just need to put warnings all over for the people who just don't understand that you are just doing this as a friendship favor type deal. People do suck though. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
I understand if you bale.
I still want one though. PLEEEZE[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif[/img]
