looks can be deceiving...orange peel, thin clear, coats? has he washed his car off and seen his paint on the rag? you get what you pay for and $250 is ridiculously cheap.

I never heard any good stories about them. 250 is pretty damn cheap though

If you were looking for fine-dining and fast service within the same walls.....would you eat at McDonald's?

The $250 is only to paint the car. Colors choices are limited. No matter how well the paint was applied, if the body work was not done well. The car will never look good.
With that said, if the body work has been completed and the car is straight and this is not a show car, but a daily driver that you want to look good from a distance. Maaco will fit the bill.

I had a friend in highschool that had his yellow 78 Toyota p/u painted blue. It looked GREAT! - well for the first 6 months and then it started to all flake off. You could tell that it wasn't even sanded but just scuffed with something like, maybe, a brillo pad. Honestly, Maaco can spray a car very well - they do it all day long and every day. However, they do not do crap for prep work; and 90% of a quality paintjob is the prep work.

I had a Honda CRX painted there a few years ago, including the door jams, for $575. At a glance, it looked pretty decent, but up close, there was overspray EVERYWHERE! It was on my headlights, windows, and they even painted over the windshield sprayers on my hood. The prep work seemed really half-assed. If you are wanting to get your beater a fresh paint job, go for it. If you are looking for a high quality, near stock job, pay the extra money and take it elsewhere.

Are you kidding!?!?!?! Don't take your car anywhere near them. Trust me you'll regret it
| NicktheBrit | 01-26-2007 08:06 PM |
I think it varies greatly from location to location - I was quoted $1100 by Maaco to paint my CRX (albeit with a bit of bodywork too). I checked out the cars they had out back and they looked like good jobs. The manager emphasized the sanding they do before hand.
I would put Maaco above the 1 Day B&P and Earl Schieb level.
YMMV.

i was told if you want a good paint job from them, do the prep work (masking, etc) beforehand and take it to them to paint afterwards.

nevermind...

I have heard the same thing. I guess they mostly just spray cars. So the painting process is actualy pretty good....but then again, spraying is the easiest part :alien:
But If I'm gona go to ALL the freakin work of prepping the car myself....I might as well FINISH the job myself. that way I can say I painted the car

If YOU do the prep work... and give them a paint ready car... then you should be ok

I got my jeep painted there before I sold it at carmax. I got 2k more after I painted it than what they offered me prior to paint. ~$1600 profit (I think I got a $400 paint job) Definitely be weary though, I noticed that they painted the handles on the left side of the car and left the ones on the right flat black plastic. There was some orange peel too.

I think for quick fixes, that will be okay... but not for show :o
My old truck had oange peel in the paint before I sold it.
Im thinking they dont do the new stlyle panting or base coat clearcoat??? IDK

Im a painter for a living... Maaco is garbage! Their packages are ridiclous, they make you THINK your getting a good deal and that the packages are your "best value" but really your just screwed from the get go. Maaco hires hackers. Your job may look good when it comes out, but be prepared cause its going to get worse! Alot of maacos use recycled paint, they basically make their own colors from recycled paint for free. And when they "do" put enough clear on your car, they thin it out with laquer thinner to give it a glossy shine for a week or so. Then the clear coat "dies back" and looks like hammered horse s##t. Orange peel is on any and every car. Paint compaines are adding more additives to clearcoat to give the clear the OEM look. The only way you can take away the orange peel is by colorsanding, starting with 800grit and working your way up to 2500grit. And if you dont know what the heck your doing, dont do it. A good macco that does good business, painters there can make mid six figures without breaking a sweat. I dont make six figures, but you dont see me standing in line at maaco for a job! Hells no!!! Good luck

My friend had his car painted there and it started peeling a week later. They even sprayed his windshield...

I remember talking about this before.
They can do great paintjobs, do the prep work yourself.
Your lucky if they scuff the paint at all, if not just paint over it. If you want to get your car looking great, do this.
Sand the entire car down to the metal, and then primer it up. Obviously taking all needed steps to prep the metal and get it going. Also removal all badges.
After primered tape up the entire car, anything you DONT want tape on, tape. If possible the windshield and glass and have the car towed to Maaco.
They will paint it, let the car sit for a good 24-48 hours after its been painted.
Drive the car very easy after being painted in about 1 month, apply a very thin layer of wax.
Continue to mantain paint, and it will be just fine.
Did this with a friends civic and it looks fantastic to this day. He washes it now once a week and waxes once a month, and the car looks like its out of the showroom.

I have to say the paint itself from Macco is not too bad
however, it is the prep work they do that make it bad most of the time
for example, they don't take the headlights, taillights, wheels, etc off
simply because they dont charge you for those kinda work...
that's why you see overspraying on the headlights, etc when you pickup the car...if you want it to come out better..do what i did..drive the car there and spend 1hour to take all the lights off...put everything in the trunk =)
also..they dont sand the car...once again simply because they dont charge
you for that...if you want to do it...do it yourself...its not hard...
i've get cars painted at macco for alot of times and i think i am a satisfied customer...you get what you paid for....if you dont pay for the prep work and you expect them to do it for free thats impossible...do it yourself..and the outcome will mostly be good...you will be satisfy...and the paint should last...
for those who complain about peeling and stuff...their paint come with warranty...so i think they will fix it for you within the warranty period..
the macco i went to is very good..the owner is very nice...and for these kinda price for a color change and such..you really cant ask for more

I read a great article in Hot Rod magazine a couple years ago about a Maaco strategy. They said the same thing some of you are saying. Remove all the trim, lights, handles, etc. that you don't want painted. Do your own body work, and scuff the paint or primer it yourself. Then, do all your own wetsanding and stuff when you get it back. That leaves them just spraying it. They said it's a great alternative to paying lotsa bucks for a good bodyshop to do everything. Everyone here will (or should) agree that a paint job is 90% prep and finish work. Anyone handy with a sprayer can do the spraying...it's a smooth car that makes for a good paintjob.

Personal experience here.
I bought my car 2 years ago, and it had been sprayed by Maaco about 1 year prior to my purchase (by previous owner). I was leary of Maaco, and this paint job, but it looks pretty damn good - even 3+years later.
There is *some* overspray, but nothing too severe (can't see it unless you crawl around and under the car. The color looks good, has good depth and shine (helped by some Zaino products). Limited peeling (2 spots on rear wing - and lower grill rails, only the rear wing bugs me)
This was a ~$600 job (no bodywork - specified on the recipts I have).

Man I like that shot :disco:
So, yeah, if you want a showroom paintjob - go elsewhere, but for a DD that gets thrashed about - maaco ain't bad. I'm sure that it's hit or miss though, so research the exact store your thinking of using (some may suck, and some may be alright)
that said, I'm pretty sure I'll get it re-sprayed in 2-3 years.... and spend more like $1500-2000 to get a kick ass paint job. But I live in rocky-road Colorado, so the paint gets pretty chewed up here :)

With all these horror stories, do they actually "fix" anything? If there was some overspray on the windshield or they some other problem, will they make it right? Is there some sort of guarantee?
