mesh foglight covers part 1

sonic_boost_wagon 03-19-2003 09:45 AM

mesh foglight covers
How the heck do you install these? I tried to screw in the included bracket. Fine. But when you insert the tabs at the top of the cover and try to line up the hole in the fog cover with the bracket, it isn't even close to lining up. I tried flipping them (the metal brackets) over and everything and all I got out of the installation attempt was some scratches on my bumper's paint and chipped off paint where the screws go on my foglight covers. I tried for about an hour and a half on each side and I just could not get them screwed in no matter what I tried. The screws seem really short, the brackets don't line up, the paint on the fog covers chipped off. I am pissed.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks:disco:

I just installed mine yesterday and the left side was a huge PITA.

Ok, obviously the bracket with the L goes on the left side. So unscrew the bottom farthest from the center of the car screw. Get the bracket and put it on such that, where the one side of the bracket that gets wider is (more or less) touching the foglight. Then it's just a matter of bending the bracket slightly to have the holes line up. Good luck.

But yeah, it is a pain, took me half an hour to figure out, but it was dark out by then.

I had the same trouble installing mine, So I went to the hardware store and got some stainless steel socket head cap screws that where about 30% longer than the ones that came in the kit.
SiHing 03-19-2003 01:47 PM

I have to say "A Cad" hit it on the nose. Save yourself the grief and buy longer stainless screws. I was at the point where I was going to fling mine down the street, especially after chipping the paint on the covers.

I found myself some longer screws and and it worked without any hassles.

Drew.

I put mine in without the brackets

They don't come out very easily. Even the other day I wanted to remove them to clean my fogs but I couldn't get them out. :o
HiFiWRX 03-19-2003 02:57 PM

I agree with the longer screws!!
I actually found a ver cool alternative here and they are easy to find!

I used the machine threaded version of the HEX head bolts you caan get for license plates... I got mine at Autozone but most autoplaces have them...

They are a standard HEX head bolt with a little dowl pin in the middle of the hex, this requires a hex wrench (that comes with the bolts) that has a hole drilled in the middle of it, making them harder to steal and easier to install because they are the perfect length!
candyman 03-19-2003 03:01 PM

Ahh the pain, the cursing, the tantrums... I remember them well!

These things ARE a complete pain to install for something seemingly so simple.

I left mine unbolted as well and then I watched my dealer easily pop in longer bolts for me when I went in for scheduled service a few days later... I felt like throwing something through a window!

So to all those getting ready to install the aftermarket mesh covers (which do look awesome when installed):

Get longer screws before starting! Much much easier... :alien:

Yep, for something advertised as a 10 minute mod it sure turned out to be otherwise. I was so pissed after trying to install them I just sold the damn things instead of going to get longer screws
sonic_boost_wagon 03-19-2003 03:26 PM

Thanks guys for the replies. I thought that I was a friggin retard trying to install these things. I had an easier time wiring in my turbo timer and installing my suspension. I was looking at the screws last night and looking into the mesh part as it hung from the top tabs wondering how the heck I am supposed to do this. I will stop at AutoZone tonight and pick up those licence plate screws, great idea. I chipped the paint where the screws go as well on my covers, they really need to come up with a better idea how to make this stuff. Like putting paint on an area where screws goo? Great idea there. I bet these things would make great frisbies....hmmm.:disco: :disco:

Hey guys,

Is the mesh made out of metal?
jedimaster71472 03-26-2003 12:32 PM

A little trick I did to save you some trouble lining up the bracket and cover: stick a screwdriver through the hole in the cover and bend the bracket up until they match up- saves you bending the bracket, then reinstalling the cover multiple times.

WRBlueMeanie 03-26-2003 02:12 PM

I didn't put the screws in at all. If you snap them in they WON"T come out. I just hope I never have to replace my foglight bulbs because they're gonna be a pain in the a$$ to get out.
jedimaster71472 03-26-2003 03:07 PM

A couple potholes and they WILL come out- just a heads up. Plus, someone could remove them very easily without the screws.
kingston 03-26-2003 03:21 PM

Can someone tell me if the grills are metal or not?
jedimaster71472 03-26-2003 04:03 PM

The real ones are a light metal, the replicas are plastic.

Hmm, I JUST came inside from trying to install my Solid Fogcovers.

Spent a whole hour trying to get them installed with the damn screws. Gave up and just popped them in.

That pothole thing is starting to worry me. I don't wanna lose one of these when I'm driving. Guess I'll go get longer screws and install the brackets this weekend.

Damn these look nice!!
wrx320 03-26-2003 07:28 PM

Ihad the same problems
The mesh on my replicas are metal. I had the same problem lining up the shorty screw with the bracket and trying to get the right angle so as not to cross-thread the screw. So....I finally gave up and first, started the screw into the bracket and , second, I just snapped in the tabs. Then thirdly, I finished by tightening the shorty screw a little bit more til snug.
BeavisNuke 03-27-2003 04:48 PM

I haven't attempted to install mine yet and I can't visualize exactly how the bracket goes. Would someone mind drawing a quick diagram?

Also, what exact type of screws do I need? (length, pitch etc)

Thanks!

THE FIX
I just ordered a set of brackets from the TS Impreza for the mesh covers, they should work. Part number 57707FE240 rh
and 57707FE250 LH and also 2 904680003 bolts for them,good luck,CHRIS........:alien:
Mr.Hanky 04-10-2003 07:11 AM

Christ, I thought I was the only one who had problems with these. I think it took me about 1/2 hour of looking at it, trying different configs, ect....

They were a real pain!!
We should start a support group.

Steve..
dookiebob 04-10-2003 07:40 AM

I have had mine in for over 6 or 7 months and they have not fallen out (no screws). I do not agree with Jedimaster's assessment, as mine are stuck in there pretty good... and there is no city in the country that has more potholes than Philly (except maybe Queens, NY  ).

I took the covers off recently, and I noticed that they were quite difficult to get out, so no pothole short of a nuclear bomb crater would jiggle the covers out. I've wanted to try the longer screw idea for a while now, but I didn't think about the Autozone thing... thanks HiFiWRX!

This may sound like a dumb question but does anyone no if the brackets are different from the seden to a wagon or from a WRX to a TS model? I have a set of brackets that the dealer ship had laying around so they gave them to me. I am trying to install some mesh covers but so far no luck, i can't even get the bracket to fit correctly with the screw holding in the fog light.
wrxwgn03 04-16-2003 12:21 PM

Ok, mine should be at my house by the time I get home. Can anybody tell me the length of screws I need to buy at the hardware/auto store? And what size. Since I don't want to wait for the subaru dealer to get them in.

Thanks
Big R 04-16-2003 01:24 PM

Hey guys, just to let you know, I've been driving around with my replica mesh covers for 3 months now (screwless) with no problems. When I snapped them into place, they held really well with no screws at all.
subiedude429 03-13-2006 11:37 PM

What do do without having the bracket?
Ok, I bought them on E-bay, I admit it. First mistake I guess. But I got my intake there, and that was great. Anyway, I got the replica mesh foglight covers... and they didn't even give me the bracket or screws. What now? I asked if the seller could send me them if he has them, but I doubt he will. Is there any simply way to screw these down? I'd like the security of having them bolted into place. You don't look so smooth when car parts come flying off! :) Any ideas? Thanks everyone.
PhastEddie 01-13-2007 04:08 PM

I just tried installing a set of these. GTSPEC replica ones. The quality is great. I know all of you have "made" yours work, but there is no way these brackets are made correctly. A 1/2 inch off??? No way. I could see if they were close. I can't even get mine close by bending. No way. I am going to have to fabricate something. I know they won't come off as they are on pretty tight. But I want some extra added security.
