Mitsu to suspend participation in WRC in '06
from rally-live.com
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has announced that it has decided to suspend participation in the FIA World Rally Championship series from 2006.

With the Mitsubishi Motors Revitalization Plan as a basis, MMC has made a solid start toward revitalizing its business operations. However, to strengthen and build upon this base, MMC realizes that it must focus management resources on the continued promotion of the revitalization plan.

Mitsubishi Motors hopes to return to the WRC Championship series from 2008, after the completion of the 3-year revitalization plan, which covers fiscal 2005 to 2007.

This decision however does not extend to MMC's efforts in the Dakar Rally. Mitsubishi Motors will continue to compete in this event.

Starting with an overall championship in the Safari Rally in 1974, the Mitsubishi WRC Team has accomplished a spectacular 34 wins in the WRC series. The team won the drivers' title 4 consecutive years from 1996 to 1999, and won the prestigious manufacturers' title in 1998.

We're well on the way to an all privateer WRC. Cool! To keep the fans interested, let's get rid of the restrictors for one year.

Sad news but no surprise. The same corporate hemmorhaging of red ink that's driving the Evos out of WRC drove them out of the US rally scene a couple years ago. Little has changed at the corporate level--it takes more than fire-belching Evo street cars to sustain a worldwide motor company these days.

Mitsu's current model lineup basically stinks: flabby Eclipses, so-so Galants, forgettable minivans, overwrought SUVs. The company's warranty costs are killing it. Combine weak models with spotty quality and you get one thing--blecch.

Let's hope the company's grand 3-year revitalization produces some winners. They could start with importing the Evo wagons for soccer moms n' dads in a hurry.

Only Ford and Subaru for works teams for 2006 :o

I'm really hoping Loeb doesn't dominate this season again.
makofoto 12-14-2005 11:27 AM

Perhaps they're waiting for their McPherson struted '07 (?) Lancer ... only a Rally team would love McPherson's over Double Wishbone.
Scooby South 12-14-2005 11:32 AM

or we could look at the positive..of all this..:D....I see a Manufactors championship for Subaru in the near future...:)...

Don't forget Skoda

Edit: holy crap, I wrote Toyota instead of Skoda. Both end in "a" I suppose... Or I had toyota on teh mind for potentially announcing an ENTRY into WRC... wishful thinking.
slowscooby 12-14-2005 01:03 PM

Gah....everyone is dropping out. This sucks. Although i guess it will be interesting to see what happnes between Loeb and Solberg now.
Anibalz 12-14-2005 02:04 PM

I guess we'll be seeing a lot of privateers in the top ten...that's not good for the sport, only two manufacturers competing for the title...
Jon Bogert 12-14-2005 02:24 PM

Can a privateer win the driver's championship, or is it only open to manufacturers entries? I don't know, but that sounds like the sort of sleazy crap the FIA or SCCA would pull. ;)
Tensen 12-14-2005 02:48 PM

jeez...and mitsu had a pretty decent shot this year, since werent they basically campaigning a 06 rule spec car this year anyway?

Anyone can win the drivers championship. But only a registered manufacturer can win manufacturer points.

Yup.

I wish they'd just stayed out of it when they left the last time, rather than come back and get people's hopes up with some promising results (in a "lower" spec car none the less)

is Skoda still on the fence? maybe hyundai will submit entries for the pacific rallies.
joey1313 12-14-2005 10:53 PM

This does not bode well for the future of WRC.

linkage?
TheSubieMan 12-15-2005 07:34 PM

Yes.

On rally Australia, he said he would be racing next year. For skoda? I think it was skoda.

[QUOTE=TheSubieMan]Yes.

Er, there have been no official announcements yet. In fact, he said in Australia that he'd like to drive for them, but nothing was final yet.

Plus I believe he would be ineligable to run in a Skoda, since the two privateer Skoda teams are registering as Manufacturer 2 teams instead of Manufacturer 1 teams.
HomerJay 12-15-2005 09:08 PM

Hopefully Ford and Subaru will pull out and all the manufacturers will get together and form their own Championship. FIA sucks anyways.
Jon Bogert 12-15-2005 09:33 PM

Yeah, they should call Doug H.
