Monaco GP - Pick The Top 8!

ChiliDog! - This pick is a tribute to Fred, of course. But on a rational basis Juan's aggressive driving style suits this circuit. He was on pole last year, his car has a shorter wheelbase and the engine is still about the strongest.
Michael - If he finishes, he'll be on the podium somewhere. This race is a crap-shoot.
David - A known Monaco specialist driving a fast car for a team that uses good strategies.
Rubens - Also a Monte Carlo specialist, but always has bad fortune. He could win here.
Jarno - A known good Monte Carlo driver. The Renault has good mechanical and aero grip, while their HP disadvantage can be masked at this circuit.
Giancarlo Fisichella - Also a good Monte Carlo driver.
Fernando - Very good chassis, very good driver.
Mark - He has had a good performances here, and the team is pretty smart about strategy.
Tough call. I think the fuel regs are going to throw up a very weird grid and it may take some time before it sorts itself out during the race.
DC -Something about Monaco brings out the very best in David. He's won in the past when he really shouldn't have.
Alonso -Since Trulli will hit bad luck again, Fernando should be right up there.
Schuey -Look for a mistake (under pressure...) then a classic fight back to the podium.
Webber -Look what he did last year in the Minardi...
Button -The BAR should go at least as good as last years Williams.....
The rest is too close to call. I think Juan and Ralf are going to be sunk in qualifying (sadly), and I think both Rubens and Kimi will hit trouble.
I'll throw Wilson out there for an odd point with a one stopper.

1 MS - you can never go wrong predicting a Schumy win
2 KR - Solid performer
3 FA - Renault's engines are a non issue here
4 DC - I don't think luck will be with him, but he should still do well on skill
5 RS - I think JPM will put a wheel out, which on this course means a wreck
6 JT - the pit stops for Renault have been good and there's no real weak spot
7 CDM - He can be consistent and that's what is needed in the no pass zone called Monaco
8 HHF - Sauber is still the best non factory team and I think he'll edge out the Jordans
I expect to see the inconsistent performances of BAR and Jaguar hang them out to dry. Jordan's efforts will be admirable but just not good enough for points. Minardi doesn't count anymore (if they ever did outside of speeding the demise of Arrows)

MS: He owns this track. With just a bit more room he would have passed Coulthard for the win last year. Anyone who watched pre-qualifying should have been astounded by how fast that new Ferrari went. Also, Bridgestone has a new selection of tire compounds for the race that seem to hew to the Michelin "super soft" theory of last year. If they deteriorate, so what? You can't pass someone anyhow.
JPM: Fred would have made this call. A driver has to be totally committed to drive Monaco, and the only driver with a greater sense of that committment is Schumacher.
RB: Rubens is due, and he looked very fast in pre-qualifying, though he doesn't have the ultimate talent necessary to do well here.
DC: His usual workmanlike drive.
JB: I don't think that Button's pre-qualifying drive was a fluke. Those Bridgestone tires are for real.
JT: I know, should be Alonso, but I just don't think the kid can handle the pressure of being a contender in the overall championship, and the streets of Monaco.
KR: Kimi is a bit too twitchy a driver to do well here. He'll make a mistake, either in the race, or in qualifying.
RS: Ralf will bring the Williams home safely.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. The real question will be how to handle qualifying. If you run light for good grid position, you have to pit, and a stop at Monaco takes forEVER. But there's the possibility that your competition will get caught in traffic (hello, Minardi) and give you the necessary time to make your stop.
Or do you go heavy, like crazy heavy and opt for a one-stop race, figuring that no matter how bad your tires are, nobody can get around you, or do you go for something in the middle? I love this race, for so many reasons. Either this year or next, I plan to rent a studio in Monaco (they have one, for $1200 per week, race weeks) and do the race weekend. I have to...it's so awesome.

Not much more that I can say.
MS - Can qualify just as fast, only with more fuel
DC- "Home" race inspires him
RB- Has talent, and is in a Ferrari.
JPM- RIP FZ But he might overcook it.
JT- Skilled, Renault has shown good qualifying strategy in the past. Needs luck.
KR - Good in qualifying, practice, or race. But not all three.
RS- Wants to be like Mike. He'll make an error this weekend, but he might get lucky.
JV - Freak accident takes out most of the leaders, Jos the Boss comes through.
Prediction: Exciting race as heavy fuel loads cook the super soft tires on long runs. Someone is bound to be slow and someone is bound to try to pass.
Question: Does anyone know if there are plans to carry the race in the states on TV other than Speedvision. I know in year's past ABC or ESPN has covered it on delay.

That one's for you Fred! :)
Overall I'd say that was a great race. No, there was no passing but what we saw was an extremely professional affair. I'm really impressed that both cars from all the top teams made it to the finish. The 1996 7 car finish is not so long ago and I think this year's event demonstraits the current level of competition in F1.
Very exciting battle of pit strategy and with all the top divers getting near perfect pit stops it was a real nail biter to see who would come out on top.
Well done by JPM, its hard to believe that is only his 2nd win, and that he got shut out in 02. He drove a flawless race and the win was well deserved. It is also good to see a new winner this year as MS and Kimi were beginning to dominate.
As the points stand in the championship, I'd say all the drivers with 25 points or more can be considered contenders, although obviously the Kimi/MS battle is the focal point.
I know I talk about the points system after every race but more and more it is dawning on me how stupid this current system is. I love that 7th & 8th score but there is simply not enough of a premium placed on winning. It would be much better to go 10, 7, 6, 5, etc.
Still I think things are setting up for an awesome second half to the season. Good stuff.

The power of Fred...who knew?
Dr. WOT, you are right on the money with the artificial closeness of the driver's standings. A win is almost meaningless, unless some substantive mishap befalls the person behind you. Under the old points standings, Schumacher would have been ahead of Raikkonen going into Monaco. It's silly, if you ask me, but hey, it works for NASCAR...
Meanwhile, what a drive by Montoya! He didn't put a wheel wrong the entire race, even knowing that he could ease up toward the end, because a pass is essentially impossible at Monaco. Impressive stuff.
Raikkonen also turned in an exceptional drive, keeping the pressure on Montoya. He just wasn't quite fast enough.
The man who WAS fast enough, Schumacher, was let down by Bridgestone. It's safe to say that Michelin handed Bridgestone's butts to them this weekend. Schumacher was quite vocal in his criticism of the performance of the Bridgestone tire, something that you rarely see. He essentially said, in the unilaterals, "The car was great, the tires sucked."
Barrichello proves yet again that he doesn't have the talent to make lemonade from lemons, as did Schumacher, who probably would have finished higher, had he not been losing time, sitting behind Trulli for those first laps.
Alonso turned in a fine performance as well. All in all, a first-rate Monaco. Except for Frentzen, everyone stayed clear of the walls and guardrails.

Howp!! That'd be fun.. A spec series of near-production STis on the streets of Monaco.. Not much room for oversteer through those corners, though.
So what's the connection between HHF, Subaru, Petronas, and Ferrari-power Sauber? Maybe he just bought a new toy and figured some Sauber livery would cover some of the cost, since he isn't quite raking in like the good ol' days at Williams? :)

I just want to add that Bridgestone's failure was evident Saturday afternoon after final qualifying. Michael qualified 5th, and Rubens q'd 7th. They were the only B'stone runners in the top ten. Who knows where Button would have ended up, since he was getting his BAR around the course very quickly before smacking the guard rails in practise Saturday morning.
Just for perspective, here are the top 12 after final qualifying. Notice two things: first the top eight were all w/in 0.65 secs of each other. That is very close qualifying! Second, the only b'stones in the top ten were Ferraris, and they were buried behind the top two rows:
Pos Driver Team T1 T2 Time
1. (15) R.Schumacher Williams BMW (M) 19.781 57.018 1:15.259
2. (10) Raikkonen McLaren Mercedes (M) 19.787 57.038 1:15.295 + 0.036
3. (13) Montoya Williams BMW (M) 19.811 57.218 1:15.415 + 0.156
4. (17) Trulli Renault (M) 19.716 57.339 1:15.500 + 0.241
5. (19) M.Schumacher Ferrari (B) 19.678 57.300 1:15.644 + 0.385
6. (16) Coulthard McLaren Mercedes (M) 19.799 57.447 1:15.700 + 0.441
7. (18) Barrichello Ferrari (B) 19.805 57.301 1:15.820 + 0.561
8. (7) Alonso Renault (M) 19.786 57.437 1:15.884 + 0.625
9. (12) Webber Jaguar Cosworth (M) 19.881 57.870 1:16.237 + 0.978
10. (2) da Matta Toyota (M) 20.128 58.186 1:16.744 + 1.485
11. (9) Villeneuve BAR Honda (B) 20.141 58.175 1:16.755 + 1.496
12. (14) Fisichella Jordan Ford (B) 20.034 58.398 1:16.967 + 1.708
Notice that after the Ferrari's, the next B'Stone runners are Villeneuve in 11th, and Fisi. Saturday afternoon folks were saying that the rise in track temps from Thursday had caused the B'stones to go off. Unfortunately for B'stone, Sunday was warm also.
In that light, Michael's performance, dragging his red car up onto the podium is certainly commendable. Though he was able to set some fast lap-times during the race, he said afterwards that there were times when the tires would not allow fast laptimes, and he just lost time hanging onto the damned car.
Nonetheless, brilliant drive by Montoya, and a very well deserved victory! As a Montoya fan, I'm over the moon!

I'd have done better if I hadn't even picked this week, and let the previous picks roll over...:(
