I wonder what the logic is of racing downhill? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. It is always tragic when there is an accident like this.

:(
The accident happened at the finish line on top of the mountain. Checkered flag man Henry Bresciani, 67, of Colorado Springs, was killed instantly when he was hit by Mini Sprint #3, driven by Jay Stewart. The accident happened about five corners past where I was standing. Initially I had heard that the car had spun and rolled but this was later denied by race director Phil Layton. Local police are now investigating the accident and an official report will be released in a couple of days. Information that does seem be substantiated is that the flagman was standing on driverside left where he was supposed to be. Logic would say that the car lost control in some manner.
Everyone down here is upset. Our prayers and thoughts go to Henry's family.
The race will continue tomorrow.

Thoughts go out to Henry's family. I hate to see stuff like this happen, and doubly in such a high profile event such as this. It will be a strange feeling with everyone in a downer mood for this weekend.
I may be reading the story wrong, but I see nothing in regards to racing 'down' the mountain. Now that would be suicide.

This is really sad. :( I hate to hear things like this. A corner worker (volunteer) was hurt quite badly a few years ago at an event I was attending when a car lost control. Prayers and thoughts to his family and all the other attendees of the event, that they will all stay safe.

They don't race down Pikes Peak, they race up it.
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

The story was wrong. They fixed it.
When it was first posted, it had something about this being the first year they are racing down the mountain.
RIP Henry Bresciani

tragic event, thoughts are with the family
they are racing down the hill this year, but just the tarmac section (first few miles). they are having a time attack type race up the hill to the end of the tarmac, then back down. more of an exibition type thing.

When I lived in Coloardo Springs someone would die just about every year. There are some serrious risks to racing on that mountain but it is an amazing place!

let's see it was right before Falken became the sponsor, I guess 4 years ago. There was a driver that died during practive then I believe the next year someone else died.
I lived over by the airforce academy and focus on the family. I still have family there. Nice city

What other racing series have a flagman at the finish at ground level. Maybe it's time to do away with that tradition?
| Subie Gal | 06-22-2005 11:10 AM |
oh God.
:(
Not the finish flag guy? :(
If so,
I learned, when I raced there, that his wife hand knitted him the sweater he wears on race day... He was a doll.... and he was there every year - oh i just cannot believe this :(
this is a huge loss to everyone.
best wishes to family and friends in this extremely difficult time :(
RIP Henry

That photo is of Art Walsh. He was flagging at Glen Cove and he is OK. Art has been flagging that race for over 40 years. Henry is his back up and has been flagging practice for the past ten years. Still a tragedy but not who you are thinking of. When I was on the mountain and the word was begining to spread Art is who I thought of at first too.

You said it Jamie,
I've seen that guy on TV every year I watch the race.
I thought that sweater was pretty cool, and he had a job that seemed like allot of fun.
Best wishes and my condolences go out too his family in this hard time..
its never easy losing someone. :(

Before we start an urban legend here, that race is extraordinarily safe. There have only been 4 deaths associated with this race in 83 years, including this recent accident. This is the second fatality in four years.

Always so sad to hear about this sort of situation. Best wishes to the family, and a be safe to the competitors. They intend to carry on with the race.

Most of the rumors seem to be he thought the last car had passed and walked into the road or something to that effect. Few of the old timers on the hill I've talked to say it was his own fault. Not that it isn't sad anyway.

i think the reason the guy died a few years ago is because the speeds age getting too fast because of the pavment. they need to leave this hill all gravel or the event isnt going to be the same in a few years.
as far as downhill racing Falken is having a "TIME ATTACK" this year so they will have a few cars racing both up-hill and down. last uear they did have the drift cars run up and downhill as well

you have a very good point there, the majority of the road is still hard pack dirt, thus the cars are running large knobby tires. chandler went off on the 1st or 2nd corner, which is tarmac. although i don't know the exact details, i would have to agree that speed and lack of the correct tires for the surface had something to do with it.
you should have seen the spectators scattering last year when the drifters went by. i swear one lady i saw almost dove into a pile of rocks to get away from the road. she was not hurt, so it can be funny.

Chandler went off at the first corner which was dirt at the time. That section is now paved. They will pave from GlenCove to Double Cut the week after the race. :(
"take care and be careful out there Rupert...."
Thanks, I have been a little nervous and extra cautious the last couple of days. I don't like those quite cars, they can sneak up on you.
