One Lap of America
2 Questions:
I noticed that there was a WRX signed up to compete in One Lap of America this year. Anyone we know?
And... had anyone here competed? Your thoughts and suggestions around the race would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fitz

I'm not going this year, but I have a codriver ready for 2003 and will be collecting sponsorts starting mid summer.
It would be pretty cool if we had 2 or 3 WRXes out there in 2003 :D

2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan Jason Keeney and Jason Uyeda
This is the entered Subaru for this year.
I don't know who it is, but maybe he is on this board.

Jason Keeney and I are planning on running One Lap this year... It is something we have wanted to do for a few years now... We will be driving my WRX...
We have very little actual track experience, but several years of national level autox experience.. So One Lap will be interesting :)
The car is way behind on development, but hopefully everything will come together in time. There is just a ton of stuff to do, and I would like to go into it with the best car possible... For One Lap, the way the rules are laid out, that pretty much means buy a car, and turn it into whatever you want... So it takes a lot of time and money... Not that it is necessary to have the craziest car to win (see the almost stock Viper that has won the last 2 years), but we need every advantage we can get to make up for our lack or track experience.
I have kept the WRX SM legal along the way, so I will be running at least the first half the year in SM at the West Coast Tours and Pros... I don't feel the car is the best for the class, but it looks that at least I won't make a total ass out of myself.
Wish us luck...

There is another event running this year for the west coast called Open Track Challenge. This is sponsored by NASA. Tracks include Pahrump, LVMS, Willow Springs, Streets of Willow, Buttonwillow and Thunderhill. This will be over an 8 day period starting May11 2002.
Track time will be 1 - 2 hrs per day. Format is time trials with multiple cars on track at one time.
Check out the site at www.opentrackchallenge.com
I am lucky enough to be driving a Lotus Elise Sport in the U4 class.
This car weighs 1600 lbs and has a 205 HP 1.8Lt 4 banger.
I don't know of any WRX's signed up yet. Hurry and you could be the first.

Jason -
What setup are you running on the car if I may ask?
I was planning on
Subaru 4 pots w/ R4 pads
Whiteline bars
DMS 40s
Unichip
Cat Back
K&N
Harness Bar
Gauges
are you going all out on the engine mods or anything? I was thinking that with just a stock unichip and keeping all the cats in place would allow the engine to be very reliable and not be put in danger of running high egts out there.
Good luck this year and hope you guys do well!

Well, there are quite a bit of mods already done to the car.. Too many to list really... Off the top of my head, the things I already have done that actually make a difference are:
Wheels/Brakes/Suspension:
- Koni 2817 double adjustable struts
- Whiteline adjustable front swaybar
- Whiteline adjustable rear swaybar
- Whiteline rear swaybar brackets
- Whiteline ALK (competition version)
- Whiteline subframe lock kit
- STi carbon fiber front strut bar
- Cusco carbon fiber rear strut bar
- Ground Control front are rear camber/caster plates
- STi aluminum front control arms
- Brembo 4 piston 332x32 front brakes w/ Goodridge lines
- Wilwood 12.1" rear 4 piston brakes w/ stainless lines
- Fikse Aro's
- Kartboy shifter, shifter knob and exhaust bushings
Engine:
- Electromotive TEC II
- APEXi VF23 turbo
- MRT top mount intercooler
- BPM Mkiii turbo back exhaust
- 550cc low impedence RC injectors
- Vishnu fuel rails
- Vishnu uppipe
- Vishnu underdrive pulley
- Magnecore ignition wires
- AEM cold air intake
- Samco intercooler hosing
- Blitz SBC-id boost controller and solenoid
- Fuel pressure regulator
- Zero sports air splitter
I want to build a wicked turbo'd 2.5 motor eventually. If things were going to schedule, the motor would already be done... But alas, that is not the case...
Congrats on your win at Ft. Myers!

Thanks!
Holy Hell you guys are going all out!!
I was going to try to take my DS car stick on a few "borrowed" parts for One Lap and then return it to DS form afterwards.
Looks like your car will be a LOT more competitive. Man, if you guys drive right you might be looking at top 5 or so.
Just take your time building that motor, because endurance is a lot more important at one lap then running an extra second or so per lap. There are always a lot of fast cars that retire because this or that breaks. Are you guys getting a bunch of sponsored parts or you paying for this stuff all yourself?
GOOD LUCK! If you don't mind keep me updated on your guys progress and whatnot once in a while.
I would really appreciate it.
edit: You guys are getting videos of all the tracks right? You get to do a "course walk" the morning of, and you CAN take one of those razor motorized scooters with you and ride the track to get a little more feel for it before you run it.
If you guys have any questions about Summit Point email me privately and I can answer them, I know that track like I know the back of my hand!

It must have been raining!!!
The times are way off.
In SCCA Club Racing we run 2:10 - 2:13 depending on CW or CCW for the 2.94 mile configs. This is in a Pro7 car w/110 RWHP at 2500 lbs. w/ 185-60-13 Toyo race tires.
I know that those cars and drivers are faster than what is posted on the NSXfiles.
Plus w/ the WRX being 5 seconds faster only AWD and wet could make that happen.

trhoppe, we'll settle just to finish the event... Reliability and consistency are the key... It is a marathon not a sprint race... I have kept this in mind as I've built up the car... I put tons of miles on it making sure nothing is going to fall off :)
Yes, we plan on getting videos and as much info as we can on the tracks before we run them... I'll definately be sending you an e-mail for some help :) Thanks...
JamesC, It's pretty hard to make any conclusions from that day at Buttonwillow. That was before a lot of the stuff went on the car. No shocks, springs, big wheels, running very low boost and missing quite a few other things. Plus I was on completely dead and bald kumhos.... yes it was raining and I was amazed that I could keep up with the better S2000 drivers on street tires.. I was effectively on slicks... The way I had the car setup was to be very loose (up until that point, I couldn't get the car to turn any other way...) Not an optimal setup in the rain. In the next session with a little more confidence I got down to a 2:38. I called it a day becuase I still had to drive home (on the bald kumhos) and I was happy to get 2 incident free sessions to practice in the rain (they said they were going to open up the groups to all drivers and I didn't want to be out on the track with some over the less experienced drivers..). It was still raining on the drive home and at 30mph, I could barely keep the car pointed straght... Pretty hairy :o...
cbuzz, yes it was... we were running config #1, I think CCW (not sure of the direction, the front straight came after the star mazda corner) . I did have a high 2:15 on saturday when it was dry, I never really pushed my luck and I know there is a lot more out there for me... Still learning to find the _instant_ speed on road courses... That's what I'm gonna need for One Lap...
Thanks..

Just reading up, One Laps sounds like its a lot of fun. A guy at my work ran his corvette last year and did fairly well. He bought a WRX and is going to be driving that this year, so looks like there are two WRXs in the mix!
Have fun!

My apologies I hadn't been back to re-read this thread since I'd bumped it.
James: I'm looking forward to meeting you in Rochester. It sounds like your car is very well set up for the events that we'll be facing in the near future. I know our team is very excited to be competing. Hopefully the two teams will look each other up when we arrive in Rochester.

Wow, New Mexico gets an event for once. I might actualy take the time to go watch it, as I bet some fool will eat ONE of the walls. Likely they will on the blind corner where if you take it like a normal corner you get airborne heading into a hairpin.

That route goes through some of my favorite places in this country. I hope to do One Lap someday. but not in a Subaru of any kind. I have a more obscure project car in mind.

My friend competed in his 2000 Firebird. Placed 22nd or 24th out of 100+ cars. He said it was fun but could be grueling for someone not used to it. Basically you live, eat and sleep in your car for one week :) You need to buy the specific tires that One Lap requires, and you should bring extra parts :)

Jason and Fitz,
As one of my co-workers mentioned earlier in this thread, I have parked my Corvette in favor of my wifes (blue) WRX this year, so I look forward to meeting up with you guys in Rochester. This will be my 5th One Lap, so if you have any questions, I can probably answer them. Even though it is a competition, I think you guys will find that most all of the entrants are happy to help newcomers out. It really is an extended family sort of thing, after you survive the week with 200+ others, you will more fully understand.
My car will be bone stock this year, except for wheels, tires, and the entertainment system (Dolby 5.1 surround video, XM radio, DVD navigation, 1000+ watts, 12" subwoofer, all custom built and removable for track duty). I did the same thing with the vette its first year out(30th place overall), then I made the suspension mods for the second year (20th place overall) and finally on the third year I did the engine mods (13th place overall, 5th in GT1). I'm never sure what mods I want to do until after I have run the car in a complete One Lap, so for this year it is stock.
Every decision on mods you make will have both positive and negative effects, here are three examples. 1) Even simple things like how loud your exhaust is will have an effect. Trying to sleep in an unmufflered car for 1000 miles will do in even the hardiest souls. You can't perform well at a race track you have never seen on no sleep. You will see these guys this year, walking around the pits like zombies, and you will know they have a loud car. 2) Three years ago we were leaving Texas World Speedway for Memphis, and ended up on a Texas highway, that had recently been repaved, but not compacted. This left a 3 inch crown of asphalt down the middle of the road, for 100 miles. The cars that were lowered to 3 inches or less of ride height had their undercarraiges destroyed. 3) In the search for max speed many guys run ultra light wheels. Two years ago on the way to Lime Rock, there was a piece of steel pipe laying across the road, under an overpass. The guys with light weight wheels paid a pretty heavy price for that last bit of speed. Watching guys trying to pound their wheels round with a sledge hammer was not a pretty sight.
Jason, you are absolutely right about the reliability thing, the guys who build the wildest rides rarely finish. When I put on my handicappers hat, I would say that the car to beat in our class is the 85 Volvo 740, yep the Volvo. Super charged Ford 5.0 liter, 500+hp, fully sorted suspension, driven by this years SCCA national champion in SRF. The guy is smooth and fast and has a car with a better power to weight ratio than a Z0-6. Now we just have to see whether or not it survives the 6000 miles.
I can't wait
See you guys in Rochester.

Rob,
Thanks for all the advice. It is very welcomed. We're currently running a scoobysport exhaust, one of the louder ones. I'm hoping that when I replace the interior in the car so that we can fit three people, that it will help quiet it down.
We're definitely looking forward to meeting all the competitors, and just hope to complete the race our first year out. Maybe next year or the year after we'll focus on letting it hang out a little, but for the first year, we'll shoot for completion.
We'll be sure to look you up when we reach Rochester.
Thanks,
Fitz

Send me a PM about when I can come over and check out your car. I haven't seen it in a while. You keep parking the Corvettes on the street. I saw your friends race corvette on the street the other night. I think I kinda pulled in front of him on accident. :o
