Painted '04 STi Steering Wheel

Just wanted to post a few pics of the center plastic section I painted. Most people complain about the cheesy silver/grey section on the steering wheel. So I figured I would darken it up a little. I actually used the same paint I usen on my grill. The center vinyl section had to be taped off....as it is not removable. I actually tried 4 different colors.....black, a couple dark greys and the final one I stuck with.

love those Defi gauges in the center pod too..

grill looks very nice.. did u saw off the subaru emblem in the center or did u get a new grill elsewhere..? thx!

I think you should have painted it darker, like the same color as the center piece. It doesn't look that different from stock to me.

Awesome work... looks very nice. I actually used to think the stock '04 wheel looked pretty nice, until I saw it in person. I never realized it was just plastic. I think what you've done is a definate improvement.

I did try a darker grey, but didn't have anything to match the rest of the wheel, which was my orginal goal. I didn't want to go actually buy paint, and usually have about 40 colors sitting around the shop, so I used what I had. I found a color pretty close, but it looked liked I was trying too hard. It would have to be an exact match and finish to look right. The black was very bad looking!

bad is in cool / tough or bad as in awful? :lol:

i don't hate the silver center section, in fact i usually jump on people and call them idiots when they say that the steering wheel is chessy and "simulated metal" really gets me going! i believe it's that color silver / gunmetal to match the other interior bits.

i however want to darken my interior up and i was thinking of doing the interior trim a VERY dark metallic along with the steering wheel. i also considered doing the subaru CF look interior kit but it wouldn't look right with the silver steering wheel. your touch is a very subtle difference and it looks good, can you share the paint type and color code?

also what model alpine do you have?

The paint is Dupli-Color Engine Enamel. Model # DE1651 "Cast Coat Iron".

The Alpine is a 9821....base model. I changed the illumination to red.
