usafiberglass.com = shady? part 1

sick1.8t 09-04-2003 05:31 PM

usafiberglass.com = shady?
so i'm looking around for an inexpensive replica c-west kit for my gc8, i found one of their bodykits on ebay,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=36475&item=2429736901
and common sense would tell me to stay away from any manufacturer that has a geocities website.

has anybody heard of them?

any comments on their products?
redgrocerygetter 09-06-2003 09:08 PM

I'm with you on this one sounds to good to be true. I don't trust them
KSs2001RS 09-06-2003 11:27 PM

one on hand, maybe they are a new biz and are just starting out, but even so, the kit seems kind of low, even for a replica, so hard to say. it could be priced low because they are trying to get business by starting out low and getting ppl interested, etc., but on the other hand it could be low because the quality isn't that great. maybe you could email them and get a little more info. gd luck.

I emailed the winner of the auction to find out how they liked the product. I will let you guys know the info when I get a reply.
KSs2001RS 09-07-2003 12:51 PM

gd idea.

i dont know if it is a new company or not...i have seen that kit on ebay a few times. im not sure if someone ever bid on it before.
sick1.8t 09-08-2003 04:45 PM

ya it was me that won the auction. i called the company and asked them if i could refuse the kit if i used the COD option for payment (another $35). they said it was ok.
so i guess no harm done if it never arrives, i just wont go buy the money orders till i get the call that its coming the next day.
and if it does arrive and its of really bad quality (i know that it probably wont be great) then i will refuse the shipment and not pay a dime.

I was thinking the same thing.

But yeah why is everybody think its sooo wrong that it sold for $300. Its like you guys are saying its too low so there must be something wrong. Its not like replicas are gonna be sold for like $1000 for a full kit.

First off its a replica, so its gonna be crappy quality anyways. Second off, its on ebay. and $300.00 was the starting bid, he probably figured that more than one person would bid and that it would sell for more than that. But since only one person bid on it, the price never went up. Hence the fact it was sold for $300

Another thing is that he doesn't list the cost for shipping, he only lists the extra charge for using a certain payment method. So he could charge $200 for shipping for alll we know, but he doesn't tell you until the auction is over.
Oh well, all i know is you can't expect great quality stuff in the first place when ordering replica stuff off of ebay. There is a reason why genuine costs a whole lot; you get what you pay for.

i called and asked them about shipping before hand, they said from them (california?) to maine (about as far as you can go) it would be $175 to a business and $200 to a house.

and i asked them about the not accepting it thing. they said i could, so i dont know how that works, but i paln on slicing open the box right there and just checking for overall thickness and any major defects. i can smooth out rough spots myself. i i dont want it i plan on just not giving them the money order and saying to send it back to them.

any ideas on a fiberglass thinkness i should be looking for?

well, just as a FYI.
any major company that does COD (GOD, UPS, USPS, Etc..) will not let you open the box. Basically, you can deny to take the box. But if you open it, it is yours. You cannot open it till you give them the money.
reasoning. If you open it, and don tlike it, who is going to close it and repack if to ship back? Not, you, not the shipping carrier.... see what I mean?

So basically, if you get it, and the box is all bashed up, then you can deny it. but if you open it, it is yours.

the shipping company is old dominion freight line, noting that i have ever heard of. i will call them and make sure that i can open it and check it out before payment. Thats what i asked them before i bid, but they may have ment they will refund me afterwards for it.

the auction ended sept 5th, and i got the email from the shipping company that they had it and it would be here the 15th.

the shipping weight is 45lbs, including packaging.
anybody think that sound like a good weight for a body kit (without a FULL rear bumper)?
liigod 09-09-2003 11:37 PM

i recived my cwest replica front bumper from old dominion, and i was allowed to open and check it first. I should have looked closer because there was a small imperfection with the passenger side mounting point being molded a little wrong :furious: i have a gtp replica tho, not the company your looking at.

any word yet?
^jynx^ 09-20-2003 04:24 PM

nothing yet?

sick1.8t 09-21-2003 08:10 PM

i got it on friday and it looks ok. the rear bumper splats dont fit very well, but i have a '93, not a '97.
the side skirts are good and the front bumper also looks like it will fit, but i wont have time to try to fit it for a little while.
i have a bunch of pics that i can post when i get back to my own computer.
the fiberglass looks to be the sprayed-in-with-gun style, instead of the layerewd mat. is this normal for kits?
if not should i worry about trying to reinforce it?
SpamMansXe 09-21-2003 08:15 PM

when you can...post the pics on and off the car!
sick1.8t 09-22-2003 07:12 PM

i hope these pics work...
i'm not putting the kit on just yet, but i did prop it up to get an idea.

the kit did come with grill mesh, which i didnt know. thats a bonus.

its about 1/8th inch thick glass all the way around. a few spots missed the gel coat.

ALL PARTS NEED WORK. the rear splats dont fit due to my US spec bumper, but they are good in quality, the side skirts need a filler primer and final sanding. the front bumper has a few dings taken out of it, possibly from shipping. it also has a few spots that have wrinkle marks, and, like the side skirts, has a bunch of sanding scratches and marks that need to get fixed.

you cannot bolt this on and paint it.

but for the $500 beans i paid, i knew it would need some work. i think its a good deal for the money spent.

most parts came like this, or with less wrapping, and then all of them rolling around in the bottom of a big box.

inside of front bumper, with fog light cut-out still present.
the cut out needs to be removed or smoothed over, it is too rough to leave alone.

edges are fairly rough on bumper, they need some work.

"K" in bumper side is paint (mold release?) that came on it.

the 2 marks below the 'K' are actually small chunks taken out of the kit, they will need bondo.

i hear that the rear splats dont fit perfect because its for the JDM rear end, and not the US.

side skirts mount well, and straight, although it doesnt look like it here (because they arent screwed in)

it looks to be good for the price paid...good luck with mounting it and whatnot.
DISCOPOPE 09-23-2003 05:27 PM

looks like decent glass..
good luck on the instal.
Z1 Performance 09-24-2003 10:46 AM

Guys, just an FYI that we are an authorized dealer for these guys.

The reason its so inexpensive? Simple - they OWN the mold, so are making the kit in house, not contracted out.

Very nice kits overall - much better than most of the ebay junk out there...

Adam
SpamMansXe 09-24-2003 02:41 PM

before i go look...im lazy and working, do you guys carry this kit?
Z1 Performance 09-24-2003 03:59 PM

Its not on our current site, but will be on our new site.

Yes though we do carry it!
SpamMansXe 09-24-2003 07:30 PM

great, well keep up posted when you do put it on your site. How much is the kit going to cost shipped?
Z1 Performance 09-25-2003 11:12 AM

Have not set retail pricing yet, but we do have full pictures of the kit both "raw, and painted on one of our customer cars (his body shop commented how nice the kit was to work with).

Shipping is a flat $130.00 anywhere in the country, as it goes via truck freight

Adam
SpamMansXe 09-25-2003 01:13 PM

id like to see the pics of them raw but especially on the car itself!
