Painting the "black piece" in the bumper to color match the car. Thoughts? part 1

Painting the "black piece" in the bumper to color match the car. Thoughts?
I never quite understood why this piece is black and the rest of the car is an entirely different color. The piece in question can be seen here:

Does this piece remove from the bumper easily? I haven't checked yet, but what are yours guys thoughts?

Thanks

That is molded to the bumper and cannot be removed without a dremel or similar cutting device.
Rokkit 01-10-2006 12:26 PM

Ya its molded in. To remove it you can cut it out. The best way to do it would be to cut it out, bondo up your ragged edges and repaint the bumper. Painting that peice to match the car would be a little weird due to the fact that it is textured. I actually painted my bumper trim GLOSS black on a blue bumper and it looked nice.
Sti-lysh 01-10-2006 12:29 PM

The make a carbon fiber cover for that section. I had it till someone backed into my front end and cracked it. It looks nice and is only 40 dollars. You can buy it at www.fastwrx.com.
twentynine 01-10-2006 01:04 PM

I think that piece is black because it was added onto the bumper as an afterthought to accomodate the extra bumper beam material the USDM Impreza requires. When I hacked my bumper beam to fit JDM fogs in, I noticed this too. The CF cover would probably look pretty slick. I'm tempted to get one now.
pdippel 01-10-2006 01:13 PM

My thought: don't do it. Look at the gallery, there are a few people who have painted it body color. It makes it stand out and you say "what is that thing for?" 8-)
Sti-lysh 01-10-2006 01:25 PM

The CF piece sticks on with 3M tape so its removable and replaceable. Being on the front end it is prone to rock ships and dings but for 40 dollars who cares.

Do you have pictures? I'm still contemplating this. The CF trim looked really sweet, but color matching still looks the best, in my opinion.

I'd also like to see much nicer pics with the cf trim installed than those found on that site.

Thanks!
Sti-lysh 01-10-2006 01:33 PM

Im at work may have some at home. You could always paint the CF piece to match as well. Then stick it right on
Steveee 01-10-2006 02:01 PM

That's an excellent idea. I'll wait and check out the pictures too, it might be really clean with an unpainted CF trim look. We'll see!

Thanks

Anyone have a better picture of what you're all talking about? I see no color difference in that picture...

the black part behind the licence plate.
sovietjet 01-10-2006 03:13 PM

On my 02 when I bought it it was painted along with the black inside the foglight housing. It does look weird and I have been wanting to swap bumpers with any other PSM 02 wrx but without luck so far.

If you cut out that plastic part you will still have the actual metal bumper beam right behind it that would be very visible. As noted before, that black portion was added to cover the larger USDM required bumper beam.
cadillacklos 01-10-2006 09:51 PM

If you do buy the carbon fiber piece, to prevent rock chips buy some 3M clear tape. If you look around the actually sell a full kit for the wrx. The kit includes mirrors, hood, fender, headlights and bumper for 70 bucks. Its good stuff, used on porsche's and such on the areas prone to chips. Once I get my new hood thats going on. The stuff is waxable and non yellowing.
DieselClown 01-10-2006 10:29 PM

it will look hideous. Please don't do it. It's blacked out because a) it cleans up the front a LOT more and b) because Subaru was too cheap to paint it and c) because it will look FUGLY.
lawn boy 01-11-2006 01:05 AM

when i see that part painted, i immidiately think that the car has been wrecked and improperly repaired
NaVaWRX 01-11-2006 01:16 AM

i did that on my car when i replace my bumper, but seriously since my car is black, it doesn't really make different, u can't really tell.. and later on it's cut for my fmic..
Petrus 01-11-2006 01:33 AM

Enhh, mine was done:

You can kinda see it in there. That wasn't intentional; I had to get a bumper replacement and they painted it that way.

I like it, but yeah the OE black stands out less.

=S2=
Steveee 01-11-2006 12:47 PM

I purchased that CF trim. 40 bucks so its not like I really care if it wasnt worth it. I'll let you guys know how it turns out, but in the mean time, lets post some more pics up of this done!

living4surf 01-11-2006 07:53 PM

GREGS2point5 01-11-2006 07:53 PM

Did the cf piece..Mine was faded black. :)
Steveee 01-11-2006 11:24 PM

Hmmmm... That looks beautiful as well!
pdxsilverwrx 01-12-2006 11:05 AM

I had mine painted when I had the whole bumper repainted. I had a little accident in my garage and that dryer came out of nowhere, they move fast when you not looking. I thought it looked cool. I later had to cut it out when I fitted my front mount so I guess it was all for nothing.
digitalmethods 01-12-2006 03:16 PM

If you cut it out you'll also need a new bumper beam that won't show. Leave it black. The only reason that would be painted is if the car was trashed and the body shop didn't feel likt taping that off. Why draw attention to a piece you don't want attention on? Same goes for the CF one.
bob655 01-12-2006 04:08 PM

It's unpainted black for one simple reason - it's not supposed to be there (look at the JDM cars). It was added on for USDM (as has been mentioned) for the bumper beam and the idea was to make it as invisible as possible.
o2sys 01-12-2006 04:47 PM

i like how the 06 has slits.....
Steveee 01-13-2006 02:42 PM

I think the cf look is growing on me
