Vote on carbon fiber hood part 1

Vote on carbon fiber hood
Hey guys,

I let my sister borrow my car and she rear ended someone. So now I'm getting some custom body work and STi parts. I plan on getting the STi Vr. I lip, STi lights, shaved license plate bracket, and I'm undecided on whether I should get a carbon fiber hood. It will cost about the same as an OEM aluminum hood, so cost doesn't matter. Weight savings is minimal, so its all about style.

Current mods are USDM STi wing, 18" Enkei RPM2's in hyperblack, and a mild drop. I plan on getting my windows tinted (mild 45% or so), OEM rear skirt, and side skirts painted.

So what do you think, go carbon fiber? OEM aluminum? Paint the CF blue to match the car?

I'm leaning towards the CF hood because of the black/blue theme with the STi lights, tint and wheels.

And thanks to Mattjk for the picture of his car. Your car is my inspiration.

Thanks again,
Pete

i was at a import car show and saw a wrx with a cf hood that had a blue tint to it. it looked really good, it matched the car perfectly. i dont know if some one sells these or if it was custom. i think it was custom b/c it matched the car so well
liigod 12-09-2003 09:07 PM

get a cf hood and paint it the color of your car.

Matt, does that make you want to get a carbon hood? Would you trade your stock one for free?

These are the tough decisions I'm faced with.

My friend has a CF hood on his WRX. It is no lighter than the stocker, and doesn't fit as well. Paint it, and you've got a stock looking hood that doesn't fit as well. Now...if you lightly paint it so you can still see the CF...that would be cool.

What kind of hood is it, so I know not to buy that kind.

Carbon fiber looks nice, but after a while the heat of the engine damages the clear coat and you will see white spots or areas where the clear coat looks faded.
RUBEN 12-10-2003 01:39 AM

I vote Carbon

Nice ride. Saw it in person and it looks great. Love the seats.
SDscooby 12-10-2003 01:45 AM

Get an RS hood and a front mount.
AWDWRXLOVER 12-10-2003 02:03 AM

Carbon fiber hoods look so good on wrxs. Here is a pic of mine.

WReX'n'Effect 12-10-2003 02:09 AM

do u mean paint it blue? or get blue carbon fiber? either way, I say blue.
sick1.8t 12-10-2003 10:06 AM

you could also paint just the raised area behind the headlights blue, and leave the rest carbon. best of both worlds
rexfan555 12-10-2003 10:16 AM

Definately go with carbon fiber. Don't paint it! That is a ridiculous suggestion...the regular hood doesn't weigh much more than the carbon fiber. The only reason to go with carbon fiber is appearance.

The half painting idea might look cool though. I think wrxlvr (i think that was his name) had that done on his silver rex. You might try and find pics of his car to see if you like it.
scrappydoo 12-10-2003 10:50 AM

Paint the part of the hood that is raised to meet the fenders and leave the rest cf. Try a chop, I've seen it in person and it looks good.

Get a hood that is the WRB. Don't go the CF hood route. I think they look terrible on cars. If you do, paint it, but i guess that would defeat the purpose of have a CF hood. Just my opinion. If you have MattJK's car as your inspiration then keep the hood WRB. Great car by the way!

you can spray it with a blue tinted clearcoat... which is probably like the one you seen at the car show... thats what i would do if i ever got a carbon fiber hood..
masiolli 12-10-2003 02:23 PM

another idea (i dont know how it would look..) would be to paint the raised area near the fender, AND the recessed area around the hood scoop blue, then just use the blue hood scoop... might look cool... but i dunno, just throwin ideas out... maybe a chop? i'm kinda interested in seeing how that'll look...

or instead of painting the entire recessed area around the scoop, you could have them paint the little slope that goes down the the recessed area... my friend did something like that on his civic.. and although its a much bigger difference in heights, it looks awesome, so i would imagine it would look good on your car...

I went through the same thing, and its in the body shop getting fixed right now. I was trying to decide between the two, looking at all the different brands of CF hoods. I ended up going with the OEM hood again. It was like a 60/40 split between what I wanted and the OEM hood won out. It really does come down to personal taste, I just couldn't see myself driving a car with a CF hood, plus non of them came with a STI sized scoop which I really really wanted, and a CF scoop is expensive around 300, half as much as a hood (~600 after shipping), not really a good deal. Personally in my opinion your car looks great the way it did before the accident, so I would stick with the OEM hood. But maybe if you got the CF hood, get the STI CF Spoiler and some STI strakes that go on the side skirts and rear bumper, it would look nice too. Think ahead so you don't feel sorry later.

Hell no! Blue all the way.

Tip-top wax job, btw...

Unless you're planning on going overboard with your WRX's exterior and competing in car shows, Do NOT get carbon fiber. My old car had a carbon fiber hood. Sure, it was cool to start out with, but as someone already mentioned, the clearcoat starts to get crappy and the hood looks like you found it at the bottom of a dumpster. Sure, it does serve a purpose (slight weight reduction), but so do those gigantic ricer wings that we all make fun of; the point is, it isn't really necessary, and most of us won't really benefit from the potential "gains." And besides, people who don't know about carbon fiber will look at your car and comment on how it doesn't match, probably because they think you got a replacement hood and are too cheap to paint it. And while on the weight issue, it's almost pointless. As opposed to most cars with regular hoods (which are pretty heavy, and the carbon fiber alternative would be a bit more practical in that case but still just as ricey), the stock WRX hood is aluminum, and the weight difference between that and carbon fiber is minor. But since you're not paying for it, price isn't really an issue for you, so it'll be a toss-up between the two in your case. But while you're at it, why don't you do the 04 headlight conversion like JDM Junkyard? His car is WICKED.
scrappydoo 12-11-2003 03:09 AM

With a cf hood you don't have to worry about the nice dents we get because of the aluiminum oem hood. I'm really getting sick of all the little dents I'm getting.

There isn't a lighter than stock CF hood out there unless you get a hood that doesn't have reinforced underlining and factory latching.. Gotta get one that requires hood pins if you want to keep it light.

Also, my CF hood flutters up and down at 70+ mph.. i've heard it's noticeable to people driving around me.. so i'm not very happy about what kind of cheap look that gives off.

both looks nice!, since i own a black car i would go with the carbon fiber hood. but the blue and carbo fiber looks hot too.

Go Carbon Unpainted.

I can't wait to see that thing when is done.
RUBEN 12-16-2003 12:23 PM

Ive seen carbon painted over with translusent paint or candies giving the color carbon effect.

I missed the dinner tonight (...oops) but hopefully it will be back on the road by christmas. I gotta do something about the stock 16's and snows. I wanna keep my 18's on all winter.

googe 12-17-2003 12:52 AM

nonfunctional nonmatching cf hoods are the epitome of rice:banana:
imprezzed 12-17-2003 07:24 PM

I totally agree with DeeezNuuuts83. I had one and it was nothing but a pain in the rectum. It was so light and under-reinforced that it fluttered violently at high speeds. I eventually swapped it back for the oem one. I liked the look of it though, just not the functionality of it.

Well I just got a CF hood for free. It's new and still in the packaging. If it doesn't work out I'll trade with a local for a WRB hood or put it on eBay.

I don't plan on going too crazy, like painting it half blue or adding a blue tint, so don't worry. I would like to enter a few car shows with it once all the body work is out of the way.

Pete
