Petter is best in the world!!

I hope everyone was able to watch Petter bring home the WRC Driver's Championship by 1 point!!! He really proved what a talented driver he is, and he handled the pressure like a veteran. I'm so proud of the entire Subaru team. And who can forget about Tommi?!! He ended his amazing career in style, just like it should be.
Way to go Petter and Tommi!!!

Go Petter!!!!
I watched the rally last night and was so happy to see Petter win the championship. He is such a great person has the greatest attitude toward the sport. You can tell this kid is living his dream. I envy him greatly. To make it even better Tommi finished off his career with a podium place at Rally GB. Way to go Subaru!!! I can't wait for next year:banana:

And Tommi going out on an uncertain tire choice to test them just in case for Petter!
That's teamwork!

And don't forget Tommi offered Petter his car after the shakedown accident in Corsica.
I was great to watch Petter's reaction, crowd surfing and all. It just isn't as much fun to see Marcus (or Kimi or Mika) win. Something about the Finnish makeup I guess. (Tommi seems to be a bit of an exception.)
Did anyone else notice they didn't show many shots of Petter and Phil together after the rally? I wonder if they just featured shots of Petter and Tommi or if Phil was kind of brushed off to the side.
Anyway....a great end to a great season. Can't wait for the Monte.

Petter Solberg kept his head during the third day of the Wales Rally GB - the final round of the 2003 World Championship - to win the event outright and take his first drivers' world title.
His performance during the final day was a carefully-calculated one: he had to push hard to maintain his half-minute lead over Sebastien Loeb but not risk going off the road.
The battle for third between rally legends Tommi Makinen was even tighter. There was precious little between them as they shadowed to leaders on every stage.
The three stages that made up the final day were, unsurprisingly, all about Solberg and Loeb. With eight straight wins yesterday for Solberg it was Loeb's turn to get some psychological stage wins under his belt to set-up a nerve-wracking final thrash through Margam.
Loeb didn't disappoint - taking a combined 8.7 seconds out of Solberg's lead on SS16 and 17. All he could do was hope that something would go wrong for Solberg in the final, 12.64km Margam Forest/Park stage.
Sadly for the Frenchman, it didn't and to rub salt into the wounds Solberg was 11 seconds quicker to stretch his rally advantage to 43.6seconds. A more excitable and extatic world champion you're unlikely to find: Solberg arrived at the finish at Margam to a rapturous reception - particularly from the Norwegian contingency.
"Incredible," he shrieked at anyone who wanted to listen. "I'm the best in the World," he added, simply trying to comprehend the enormity of what he'd done.
Loeb was a valliant runner-up on the stage and in the event. He will undoubtedly come back in 2004 refreshed and refocused to mount what will surely be another fast and consistent challenge for the title.
Those legends Makinen and McRae continued to fight tooth and nail for the final podium slot in what is the last ever event for the Finn and the last for at least a year for the Scot. A last stage puncture - which he stopped to fix - denied McRae the chance to overhaul Makinen but it didn't jeopardise his fourth place because he was so far ahead of fith-place Ford driver Francois Duval.
Sixth place was handsome reward for Peugeot stand-in Freddy Loix. The Belgian will be in the car regularly in 2004 and is sure to feature in the battle for wins and titles.
And so a classic event and championship comes to a close. 14 events with six different winners (Solberg: 4; Loeb: 3; Gronholm: 3; Martin: 2; Sainz: 1; Panizzi: 1) has provided thrills and spills, joy and heartache from the icy mountain roads of Monte Carlo to the muddy forests of Wales, via the dusty slopes of Greece and the rain-lashed tarmac of Catalunya.
Time for a rest for our WRC heroes after 11 months of flat-out motoring. No such luxuries on wrc.com, though. We'll be here long after they've gone home bringing you news, comment and analysis as we count down to Monte Carlo 2004.
See you there!

Shouldn't this news be a front page stickey? Who do we need to talk to to get Peter his proper recognition?
What a great season for Peter.
Next year Tommi and Collin will be greatly missed. Fortunately I think the battle between Martin, Loeb, and Solberg will be a great one to watch.

I wonder what they do with the championship car that Petter drove on the final stages? I bet Subaru/STI will give that car to Petter as a gift. I'm still so excited about this, the future for our rally team looks awesome. Petter has become my all-time favorite driver, and we have only seen the beginning. And next season we have Richard Burns back on the team, so I'm predicting a 1,2 finish for Subaru next year!!

It's a good thing rally isn't popular like football; I couldn't watch the rally til last night on Tivo so I had to avoid the motorsports forum completely... it was good,
-awesome to see Petter win and show some emotion, not like Robo-Grunholm.
-awesome to see the cops 0wn Grunholm
-good to see the battle of the retirees: McRae/Makinen
-somewhat anticlimactic after Loeb's team told him to stop driving. "We didn't tell him to slow down, we just told him to stay on the road"

How professional was that of Loeb? I couldn't imagine being in the postion that I could have both world championships in my hand and then told not to drive 100%. It shows that he is a team player no matter how frustrating it is. Another driver in red comes to mind, I think it is some guy from Brazil that cries a lot.

That was added last night.
Next year is going to be a good one for Subaru, but has anyone heard if they have picked up a third competitive driver? I've been a little dissapointed the last few years that Subaru doesn't even have a chance in the manufacturers title by only running 2 competitive cars. Had they had a third this year it would have been a three way hunt for the manufacturers title.

None of the WRC teams will have 3 cars next year... new rule changes for 2004 are aimed at evening the playing field for the manufacturer's championship as well as reducing cost for the teams involved. I suspect the Burns/Solberg combo will be a force to reckon with next year...

I think they blew that for Loeb - they were in a good spot after part way through day one when Marcus got pulled by the police. By the time they let him loose, Petter had 40sec in the bag
What gets my goat is the team boss saying "we didn't tell him to slow down" - They know full well what the language they used meant and you could tell loeb was not impressed. Colin was even less tactful
But then again Loeb is more of a tarmac guy than he is dirt specialist like Petter
Even after he was let loose and Petter was being careful, Petter still took 11secs from Loeb on the last stage

FIA did not give the teams any choice in that and given that only 2 teams ran 3 cars and they added 2 additional rallies - I doubt the costs were reduced much if any......
I think we are all going to be disappointed by next season - less action to watch and a real chance someone is going to get badly hurt.........

The way I understood the new ruling is that you can still run 3 points earning cars (for the manufacturers title). However, you can only have 2 drivers that have podium finishes in the last 3 years (I don't know if this is top 3 in the drivers championship, or top 3 in any rally). This will allow teams to compete on a more even playing field, while still being able to develop new drivers. I think this will make the manufacturer's title more exciting, but it may end up huring the sport - like the loss of Collin McRae.
| CobraKLR | 11-11-2003 02:08 PM |
Whoa, I did a search on this. I didn't know that the FIA changed their mind from their first rule change of restricting the third driver to only allowing 2 works cars. That indeed does suck for the sport.

The 3 driver rule was in part way through the season but a couple of months ago, FIA reversed that and said only 2 drivers, 2 more rallies and a new format that means recce in the morning before the competitive stages and no gravel crews etc etc - so less cars and more importantly - less stages run
That's the reason Colin doesn't have a drive.... the rule changed too late in the season and with Hyundai out, there is a glut of WRC drivers round looking for seats..
