Power folding heated side mirrors.

A few weeks ago I decided that I needed a little project so I purchased some used JDM power folding mirrors from another member. I knew that because they were designed for a right hand drive car I would have to make some modifications in order for them to used properly. Another issue for me was that my '03 wagon, being a Canadian market version, had heated mirrors and since where I live it gets damn cold in the winter I wasn't too wild about loosing that feature. I decided to completely disassemble both sets of mirrors. I was aided in doing so by this excellent scoobymods thread. It wasn't easy getting the mirror glass out but with patience it can be done successfully. The only trouble I had was with my stock driver side mirror as it had a different type of adhesive that required more heat to soften up. I had assumed that it would be the same as the previous three that I had done but it wasn't and it broke. That was kind of annoying because it meant that I had go through the extra step of removing the heating element from the broken piece and affixing it to one of the JDM mirrors pieces. The trickiest part of the whole procedure was figuring out a way to run two wires through the power folding mechanism to get them to the heating element. I ended up taking the cover off the mechanism and feeding the wires through the centre of it in the same location as the rest of the stock wiring. After that I addressed the RHD problem by simply shimming the power mirror adjustment mechanism with some small washers. I then connected up the wires to the heating elements and reinstalled the mirrors in to their housings. After that I wired everything up and was done. The whole thing actually went pretty smoothly I thought. Sorry, I didn't take any good pictures during the process. I've only got the after shots. The scoobymods thread shows most the process anyway.
Here is what they look like :

The only parts I had to purchase were the mirrors and control switch. I bought them used from another member for around $225 or so shipped.

Wow. ::Drooling::
If I were a little more confident in my ability to do this kind of work, I would definitely be doing it. I've always wanted heated mirrors, but heated *auto folding* mirrors? ::Drooling some more::
I wish this was an option I could just buy and install onto my car. I don't suppose you're taking orders? ;)

MAK

It really wasn't that difficult. The main thing required is patience.

I supplied the heater elements for the ScoobyMods writer at $35/shipped for a pair. I haven't sourced them in awhile though. They wouldn't power fold but they'd certainly heat up.

Where does the controller for the mirrors go? It would be cool to ditch the controller and wire the mirrors so that when you shut the car off, the mirrors fold in, and when you turn it back on, they fold out. Unless I'm an idiot and that's already what they do! Cool nonetheless, I would definitely be interested in doing this.

Job well done. I had folding mirrors on my Passat, and while cool, I don't believe I ever used 'em....except maybe for parking in super tight spaces once or twice. Do you find your mirrors icing up alot in Alberta? That'd suck - I can see where you'd be psyched to get those in....

The mirrors are controlled by the switch in the center consol by the hand brake. I plan to wire the mirrors up so that they close when the car is off and open when I start it up. I just need to find a couple of the right relays in order to wire it up properly.

During the winter here just about anything can ice up but my WRX has always had heated mirrors and I figured if there was any way to keep them I would.

I never really thought much about the noise. I just played the video for myself again and I think the noise is a little overdone. I was holding the camera quite close to the mirror at the time. If you are sitting inside the car and flip the switch you still hear it clearly but it certainly isn't what I would consider loud. It doesn't bother me at all.

It sure seems to me that the power window switch is the same as the one used on the Nissan 240sx S14 (1995-1998).
The switch housing even has the Nissan logo on it.
I would think that you could just get a used power folding mirror switch for an S14 off ebay and wire the toggle for folding the windows.
Sorry if this post is confusing.

Edit: Side note, on that link the guy says its for s13 and s14, which is not the case. I have an s13 and that switch is not right. It looks smiliar but the s13 sits sideways instead of longways in the center console and the mirror select is reverse of that shown. Sorry, had to clarify that.

Power Mirror Installation Instructions

Just thought that I would pass to following along:

WxMan, how closely do these instructions match what you did on your '-03 as these instructions are for a 2000 Impreza RS? Thanks!

wrx692,
The basic steps are the same, however, the only change I made at the mirror switch was to add two wires to the stock harness. There is room in the harness for them but it is just empty on the North American model. Also at the the connection of the wires inside the door things were a little different. My Canadian '03 already had heated mirrors so the harness there was larger with two extra wires to connect. The JDM harness can still connect with the stock one but I had to make some adjustments to reconnect the wires for the heat. I can't verify that any of the pin out colours in the diagrams are correct for an '03 but besides that and a few other minor details this is another useful guide to the process of installing these mirrors.

Rewiring and relays are nothing but Greek to me. My electrical skills can basically be summed up as being able to replace batteries and disconnect wires (I did the No-AC during defrost and no DRL to my Subie). I've installed a car stereo exactly twice, and while both of them worked, they didn't look pretty (which is what happens, I suppose, when you have the wrong adaptor and you just end up splicing and electric taping all the wires). I've read through a couple of guides for making heated mirrors, and I just started looking at the power folding option, but I tend to get lost easily. Maybe I'll sit down this weekend and try to diagram it all out for myself.
Besides, one of the reasons I bought a WRX is because I wanted to get a little more hands on with my car and learn how everything works.
Thanks for the idea though.

The blue plates (that the mirror attahces/swivels on- is that blue factory or a sticker or cover? That sets those mirrors off. Please let us know!!!

As far as I know they are factory painted. That is another reason why I did the mod. It is subtle but I think it looks great. Just for kicks here's a full shot of the car for ya.
