Project rally mud flaps: Part 1

Since winter is coming up I thought it would be a good time to think about mud flaps on the wrx. Prodrive makes a set of rally mud flaps but I don't feel like paying 250+ for them when I can make them for under $50 if that. First step was design, for this I found a design online made for the older style Impreza. With no tweaking it fits perfect. Below are the pic's...

This is the rear mudflap though I found out it will fit the front also so I may use this design for all 4. You can see here the design I printed off the net and then used a sharpie and straight edge to measure and transfer onto cardboard for the template.

This is supposed to be the front but to be honest I dont think I will use it since the design for the rear fits the front too.

Rear fitted to rear and fits awesome too!
I will be making the final product out of quater inch rubber mining belt...

Clever. Good luck.

You are going to make them out of metal? What happens if you go over a speed bump or turn hard?
| STL WRX | 11-30-2006 07:31 PM |
No speed bumps where live and it turns fine.
| martinus | 11-30-2006 07:33 PM |
OMG why metal ? I thought I was new to all this...
BTW. Mud flaps HAVE to, almost touch the ground. ( starting 3/4 up on the wheel arch . )

They look very good indeed.I made same a couple of years back for my old GC8
I attached them to the car using some old oem brackets from the hard plastic flaps that are/were available for the n/a model.

..the only other thing I would suggest is maybe radius the edges a little to make them look a bit cleaner?

The big question here is... what did everyone use for material, and where can it be obtained?
I have been considering this for a while, but am unsure what to use. A nylon reinforced rubber maybe?

Dood... You're going to hit something. The metal will dent, scratch, and maby even scratch your paint when it rolls back.... THere is even the possability that you may puncture your rear tire if the front one gets ripped off.... Take it from me, don't go with metal...

I've been looking for a vendor on mud-flap material and this site helps a lot...their prices seem reasonable too, when you've consider the alternatives like "PepBoys', Kragen, etc.!...and their "universal" flaps! They also carry those made for trucks but at a higher price or style that doesn't suit the Rex. I want to customize mine and having the resourse of material, helps a lot! Thanx for the link.

Mudflap material

I just went down to the local auto parts/farming store and bought a pair of 20x24" vulcanized rubber mud flaps for farm trucks, and cut them out to the same pattern you've found on the bandsaw (front and rear both from one large truck flap). You could probably even use a utility knife if you put some muscle behind it and take your time to do a neat job. You can even sand the edges to radius them.
The only problem is the ones I bought had fibreglass reinforcing throughout, so I had to get some black rubber paint-on electrical tape substitute to cover the white fibres on the cut edges.
They work great, are super tough, and for $20 per pair, can't beat the price.
Scott.

Sparco flaps ftw, They mounted up with little more fuss than some rusted bolts. A little bit of aluminium fab to help support the rears on mine and i was done, and all for less than $10. I found em on ebay for 1.50 a pair. Yeah they rock

I work in new home sales and in the early stages you always have to deal with driving through dirt roads, water trucks spraying water on them turning them into mud. I just get tired of after having my car immaculate from washing it on the weekend to having it look like I've been through a rally race. I admit it does look pretty cool though, but it gets old fast. I end up washing the car for 3 hours spraying the undercarrage with a hose to get all the mud off. I've been tempted to do donuts in some of the open fields though:).
Well, I pulled the trigger on the blue sparco's from www.rallylights.com for $46 shipped. Now to get some black fender washers and black screws. I have speed clips and 1" plastic spacers for the 3rd mount. I picked those since I'm concerned with weight. The heavier duty ones are really heavy.
I'm debating on changing the color to the white translucent ones. I'm going to get some STI decals made to put on the flaps.
