Question about debadging part 1

Audi-TT 09-16-2005 09:43 PM

Question about debadging
Quick question about debadging...yes i've searched...

I read that the best way to do it is to use a hairdryer, then either get the SUBARU letters off with your fingernails or using dentalfloss/fishing wire. Here's my question...

after all this, will there be a lot of residue left to clean up on my trunk? I read that using WD-40 or some goo gone something like that works, however autozone said it might damage my paint. I was just wondering if I can just wash the car with soap and scrub at it a little to remove the excess tape?

Thanks,

TT

I used my health card and a adhesive remover I got from autozone..

adhesive remover?
Quasi 09-17-2005 12:10 AM

yep, i used a 3m adhesive remover (clear solution) from advance auto parts.. worked perfectly... and yes, there will be a decent amount of crap (adhesive) left over, but took me less than an hour for the SUBARU..

As mentioned above, you will have quite a bit of "gunk" left on the trunk. I did mine 2 weeks ago when the car was over 2 years old on my PSM paint and there were no shadows from the letters which was good. I used dental floss, and it was the cheap unwaxed type. Don't use that as it breaks very easily. Didn't damage anything, but made my life a lot more difficult. I would recomend at least waxed floss or fishing line to save yourself some effort. Also I skipped the heat gun/hair dryer as I don't have either and I made sure I married a low maint. wife so neither does she. This left A LOT of gunk on the trunk, so if you can heat it, do it, but you can get it done without it.

As for removing said gunk, I started with goof off (citrus based, all we had) and it was working, but very slowly. I then switched to denatured alcohol, which worked a lot faster. I've never read about anyone who has used this so I was worried about my paint, but it didn't do anything that I could see. Word to the wise though. Get some clean SOFT white rags for this part. I bought a new lint free buffing rag at autozone, but it was orange, and that combined with the goof off (orange liquid, citrus based) left a bit of an orange hue to the lid of my car. This did wax right off, but it made me very nervous. So I would say use a WHITE cloth, and also make sure it won't scratch you car as you will be rubbing quite a bit with it. I switched to an old T-shirt and that made my life a lot better.

So anyway, cliff notes:

1) waxed dental floss or fishing line so it won't break
2) use a WHITE rag that will not scratch the paint even with "heavy rubbing"!
3) expect to wax the area when you are done
4) will take about an hour to remove S U B A R U.

I love the look, and now I'm just wondering if WRX is staying or going...

I just used floss and the sun.

I actually was able to seperate the actual badge from the Double sided tape that they used and then I just peeled that off piece by piece.

There was very little goo left over but I used the citrus flavored goo gone or goof off I forget which is one to remove the small amount that remained.

Very lightly wipe the area dont scrub it. it shoud come right off.

floss or thin fishhing line

i used turtle wax goo gone, finger nails, and a sponge. then i used wax and buffed off any residue
moogoob 09-17-2005 11:31 AM

no fingernails... that will scratch. i used goo off to get the goop off. then washed and waxed after of course.
2phless 09-17-2005 01:32 PM

I rolled the double sided tape off by hand. Made for some raw, sore thumbs, but it came off scratch free. There wasn't a paint shadow, but you could see where they were. Took 2 different waxings to get rid of that entirely.
enewtabie 09-17-2005 03:23 PM

Yep,I used that orange stuff from Autozone too.
njward 09-17-2005 05:24 PM

I used goo gone and it took me about an hour. I had a crapton of glue left on there after the letters were removed only because i didnt heat it up enough. if you try to rub it off with your fingers and goo gone, beware. I had the worst blisters on half my fingers from doin that. Hurt like a b*tch.
dlkzx 09-17-2005 07:57 PM

i took off the WRX earlier today. looks way better with the subaru and small impreza badge

One small application of rubbing compound would have taken care of it. It works just like wax. Just be gentle, rub until the "ghost" comes off, then polish and wax. Done.

By the way, to the person who started this thread, there's no way in hell you searched for info on this. There are literally 13,000 threads on these forums for how to do this. They are all identical to this one. There's one in the noob forum right now. Don't even have to search. :furious:

yea, i actually did search, and i did find a lot of stuff, but it was all a bunch of garbage, like searching through random pieces of paper, i rather just research the info all over again.

btw what's with people and searching? so what if i didnt search. it's my right to post this thread all over again if i feel like, and since there is no actual how to do on removing the badge i'm going to make one.

geez, try telling me to search in person =) freakn computer screens do wonders to people's egos =D
Jonnyfilmboy 09-19-2005 03:22 PM

I was just joking. :) Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way.

I just think it's funny about this thread topic. Seriously, my friend. There are hundreds of threads on this and they all say the same thing. You won't be the last person to make a thread like this. There will be hundreds more after you to post the same thing. People have screamed at me about not searching. And I wanted to continue the cycle of screaming at the new person. After a year of being on these threads, you will scream at someone for posting this same exact thread.

Hey that's me! I used that to get the general cencus as to weather or not I should go for it....

I did it, and I love it. I saw another silver 04 wrx with S U B A R U on it and it looked way funny now that I've been looking at mine for over a week. Thinking about going completely nude, but not sure yet...

Love it with just WRX though. Much better.

Get GOO GONE It's da shiz! ... no really go get some Goo Gone. It won't 'hurt' your paint, in the 30-45 minutes it takes to debadge everything on your car, but it will remove some if not all the wax in the area's you use it. So once you've debadged & Goo Gone'd... Wash the area really well, and apply fresh wax. Enjoy badgeless motoring!

Peace
Jason

Rebadging / Debadging
To answer thread question, YES i had the WHOLE WORD S U B A R U left after removing the badges.
Allow me to share my experience debadging:
(btw shes an 04 STI JAVA BLACK with 23k mi. so shes fairly new paint)

Mission: Rebadging Front /Debadging Trunk (removed Scubadoo)

Supplies: Blow Dryer + Dental Floss (waxed) + 3m Adhesive Remover + old t-shirt (to apply the 3m A.R.) + Credit card + My car wash supplies from home (which i'm sure you have if u own a scoob) + Turtle Wax (with applicator)
All I had to buy was the 3m (about 7 bux @ auto zone)
and the turtle wax with applicator had a decent price, 4 bux.

Instructions:
- +/- 2 minutes blow-heating each letter (maybe if u do more, more goop will come off at once? or maybe damage paint?)
-Saw downwards while pulling back with the floss
- I went CRAZY with the 3mAR. Since i would probably never use it again, i did not use restraint (no visible damage to paint whatsoever, i was rubbing it w/ the t-shirt very vigorously and applying it on like crazy, i got sore thumbs from when i would use them)
-Use Credit Card to make the BULK of goop come off,
-Use a very 3mar saturated part of the t-shirt to remove the thinning parts of goop.
-clean the new sexay ass.
-wax that ass.
-2nd Coat of wax 100% removed the shadow, though the first one left it more than invisible enough for me.

oh and if u're REBADGING the FRONT like i did today also, the blow dryer, a really thin phillips screwdriver or similar and dental floss:
-Heat up the front badge 2-3 minutes
-Use the slim screwdriver to Pry the floss behind the badge
-Floss that grill badge off.
-the excess came off suuuper easy w/ just my thumb
-Most badges come w/ dual sided tape, if not by some of the heavy duty 3m ones, (the grey kind not the white)
finess doesnt really matter, just dont try to pry it out w/ a screwdriver (i scratched a tiny part of the brim that still shows. recommend flossing 100%)
:D :D

--Hope this helped!!
Diego
Silverex04 09-28-2005 09:20 AM

I used a lot of dental floss (cause it kept breaking) and then used a long john shirt while in the sun (mid summer) and kept rubbing until it was clean. Took about an hour. I took everything off ie: S U B A R U, WRX, and the dealership stickers
revnup 09-28-2005 11:03 PM

Did mine last night using a hairdryer and 10lb. test Stren. Piece of cake. Used the citrus Goo Gone to soften up the adhesive, and an old microfiber cloth to rub it all off. Don't forget to wax!!

Chris
Jimpreza 09-28-2005 11:22 PM

i used goo gone and no paint damage occurred, ever...just have someone buff the area a little because you can see where the sticker was at different angles.
