Question about heated side mirrors part 1

Question about heated side mirrors
Hey all,

I've done a search on this, and havent seen any really conclusive answers on this one.

I decided to buy a WRX from the US, since it comes out to be about $10,000 cheaper than buying one here ($23K USD vs. $37K CAD  ). It seems that the US model does not come with heated seats/mirrors as they do come standard in Canada.

I can live without the heated seats, but heated mirrors are VERY useful up here, especially with freezing rain etc.

I'm pretty sure I can find heated mirrors at a junkyard, since every WRX in Canada since 2002 (and Outback Sport models) have them, but how easy are they to install?

Is it safe to assume the US-spec WRX is pre-wired for the heated mirrors? You *can* get them in the Limited model....

Does anyone know for sure?
pityr 10-16-2006 11:57 AM

Very easy to install the actual mirrors. I can't say if they are wired for them or not. My 02 wasn't. My 06 forester has the heated mirrors and it uses a similar if not the same harness as the Impreza.

I'ld love to know also. I have the tech manual, but doesn't clearly show if it's prewired. I think someone has to actually open up the door and visually check.

Your 02 wasn't pre-wired for them because they weren't available on the USDM Impreza until the 2004 MY when the Premium Package came out (heated seats, heated mirrors, heated windshield wipers, moonroof, spoiler). Sorry, that doesn't really answer the OP's post but I would assume that the heating element just draws power from the same wire that supplies the mirror positioning motor. I would think that the heated mirrors would work on any car so long as the plug/harness was the same.
GooseMan 10-16-2006 12:37 PM

yeah, I figure the heating element will draw power from the power mirrors. I'm wondering if they will go on/off with the rear defroster.

I would assume all the wiring is the same between limited/non-limited models....

The mirrors are not wired into the rear-defrost circuit. AFAIK they are always hot, I've come out to my iced-over car and found the mirrors spotless. Even if I'm incorrect, they do come on with the ignition, not the defrost button. If I go to the gym in the morning and the windows fog up, the mirrors defog without turning on the defroster.

well thats weird

Weird? Maybe. FTW? Definitely.
pezman04wrx 10-16-2006 02:33 PM

^^^ Definately kind of odd ... Personally, I always figured they were wired into the switch for the windshield wiper heaters ... They have to be wired off of some kind of switch though ... Otherwise they would just burn out, wouldn't they?
Cooter05WRX 10-16-2006 02:39 PM

i have a 2005 WRX with the premium package and it does not have the heated mirrors.
Lizardeye 10-16-2006 02:58 PM

The 2006 wrx side mirror heater is tied to the rear windows defrost as stated in the manual.

Yes it does.

FYI, my 2006 impreza wagon has the heated mirrors.

They only activate when I enable the rear defrost.

Where would one purchase heated mirrors for an '06 2.5i?

Crazy...
Subie Gal 11-11-2006 10:17 AM

i swapped mine the other way

my car came with heated mirrors.

but they were damaged

(salvage car)

cheaper for me to swap them to non heated

this may help. here is how it was done:

So I guess the USDM cars don't have the heated harness on the car side?

not a 2002-2003. you'd have to hard wire it yourself.

cant say for the newer cars for certain.

well, I just got a pair of heated side mirrors off a 2004 WRX (Canadian Spec).

I'll be attempting to swap em into my 2006 WRX (US spec)...hopefully it is just plug and play.

I notice that there IS a "heated side mirror" fuse in the fuse panel (behind the coin tray) so I'm going to assume the car is pre-wired.

I just hope my assumptions are correct!! :D

Anyone ever have their door panels removed and notice the wiring for the mirrors? The heated mirrors seem to have 2 extra wires, which I guess are for the heating element....
GooseMan 11-21-2006 05:34 PM

OK! My assumptions are NOT correct. I popped off the door panel, and checked my stock non-heated mirror harness...there is only 3 wires (the heated mirror has 5). So it doesnt seem to be plug and play :(

I dont know anything about wiring, and didnt want to pull apart any more of the door, so I dont know what to do now.

Can ANYONE get some kinda wiring diagram?
Donzo 11-22-2006 10:33 AM

When I did my STi interior in my 2006 WRX, I noticed a wire harness in the door that was taped down and wasn't plugged into anything. Not sure what that is but this thread makes me think that it may be for the mirrors.
GooseMan 11-22-2006 10:55 AM

really? Hmmmm....

I tried to look in there a bit, but the inside of the door is covered with that clear plastic wrap...and I didnt wanna pull it all off (its a brand new car, didnt wanna mess with it too much...especially if I dont know what the hell I'm doing)

Just to make sure, Can you confirm that the 04 mirrors are the same as the 06? Maybe it would have been easier to just get a pair from an 06?

(Just reaching here, as most manufactures dont change harnesses/parts much because their universalness [is that even a word?] is what makes them save money)

GooseMan 11-22-2006 02:00 PM

well, I know they are physically exactly the same, and after looking at the wire harnesse, the heated ones have 2 more wires than the non-heated.

I didnt really tear apart the inside of my door much, so maybe there is another harness sitting in there, or two extra wires sitting around somewhere.

If anyone is brave enough....try to remove your door panel, and follow the wires from the mirror...inspect them etc....maybe there is a simple solution.

It's GOTTA be pre-wired somehow!
jtodaro 11-22-2006 04:36 PM

I agree with it having to be wired. And if you read subiegal's writeup, it seems like you will need a molex from a heated harness as the plug is different. Maybe there is an intermediate wiring harness for the door that is different for the heated ones. Did you try calling subaru parts?

I havent called anyone yet. I figured the actual plug would be different...thats not a huge problem (just gotta get new connectors). Just gotta find out where the two extra wires would be!

She has a Canadian-spec car, so its already wired for heated mirrors.

any pictures by any chance?
GooseMan 11-28-2006 10:22 AM

OK! I've come across the wiring diagram for the heated mirrors. Its from an 04...but I gather the 06 wont be that much different.

I started a thread on it...if anyone can help out!
