Rally truck?

Hey, I was wondering if anyones ever seen a truck set up for rally or rallycross? I'd like to buy a subaru for these purposes, but I'll be doing a lot of sand running, so a toyota truck is more likely.

Sure... there is a red S-10 that competes regularly in the Rally-America series. ;)

It was likely Anders' old truck. He rallied it for a while before going to his Frankenpreza. :)

It was Anders' old truck. The white Mitsu, good to see the new owners ot running it. It beat us at rally TN, and I clearly remember being very surprised at its speed at Cherokee Trails back when the FIA was rumored to be thinking of making CT a WRC round.
A well sorted truck like is very capable in G5.

The S-10 is cool, even for a truck.

A couple of years ago (2003 I think) there was a 1994 2wd regular cab toyota pickup up at Oregon Trail. Not sure of their result or whatever became of the truck but I seem to remember that they did finish the rally. If I find pictures I'll post a few.

Yup, looking fine too.
Some older pictures and a cool video:
http://linaracing.com/pics/eventdetail.cfm?year=2002&event=Sandblast
Surprisingly, front to rear weight ratio of the truck was something like 56/44.
And the suspension was tuff-az-nutz: eight years of rallying that truck, never a bent A arm!
Cheers,
Anders

I remember you telling me that you rallied it quite a bit and never really broke much in the suspension. Trucks == naturally toughened suspension. :D

Awesome. I'll go for it. 4wd toyota pick up toughened suspension beard seats 4 point harnesses cab cage, and some other goodies.

Whoa whoa whoa. The discussion so far has been "can a truck be suitable for rally/rallycross competition". If you're going to buy a semi-prepared vehicle based on that, PLEASE be aware that what you have described is not legal for use in rally competition. (Rallycross, yes)
For instance, 5 point harnesses are required, and must be relatively new FIA or SFI certified. Depending on where you are, seats may have to be SFI or FIA as well, and I can't see anything in the Beard literature that says they are, even though they may be fine seats. The don't know exactly what a "cab cage" is, but roll cage specifications are different from one type of racing to another, so please expect that the cage you are buying is _not_ legal and may have to be completely torn out if you want to rally in it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't buy this truck, it may be a great vehicle! I'm just saying that you may want to consider that the extra racing stuff in it may be worth absolutely zero dollars to you since you may have to toss it. If you're considering going rallying with it, do a bunch of research on the rules and make sure you don't get stuck with something unusable.
If rallycrossing and sand duning are the only real uses, then it sounds fine. :)
Cheers,
Anders

No no no, my mistake, that's similar to how im going to set the truck up. Cab cage=roll cage not extending into the bed. Duning and rallyx are the only real concerns, maybe stage in the future if theyd allow it.

I codrove in a Ford Ranger, which had all the frame replaced with tube, leaving really only body panels hooked on. A ~450 HP motor rounded it out.
Very solid, very loud, and very quick, although it had some trouble getting all that power to the ground.
Plenty of shortcuts to be taken over the rocky bits, too, as it had huge suspension travel :-)

I must say, the S-10 looked pretty good out there, then again, I may be biased.

glad you guys like the red S-10!
my brother and i helped jim cox build that truck. i have co-driven w/jim in his old truck and my brother has codriven this one a few times.

it has a pretty stout V-8 stuffed in there. the body is stuck on a 87 s-10 blazer frame and moved back a few inches on the frame. interesting fact: it has the same wheelbase and track as a WRX. the engine is also moved back and down a bit as well. has a very quick z-28 road racing steering rack and pretty beefy brakes. it is also a manually shifted automatic.
i love the way this thing sounds.
