update...
The Subaru World Rally Team will be entering three cars in the forthcoming Rallye Catalunya Costa Brava, round four of the FIA World Rally Championship, which commences on Friday March 22.

The team will be nominating Richard Burns and Petter Solberg to score points, and also entering a third Subaru Impreza WRC2001 for Markko Martin.

Team Principal David Lapworth diplomatically explained his decision to once again choose Solberg over Martin for Manufacturers' points, despite the Estonian being regarded by many as a better bet for the Spanish roads.

"The team is delighted with the progress both Petter and Markko have made so far this season, which has not only been well beyond our expectations, but has been in extremely difficult conditions, especially in Sweden and Portugal. Again, there has been precious little to choose between the two young drivers for the second nomination in Spain," he said.
I want to see petter solberg win a rally that guy rocks i like him even when he was driving for ford its time for subaru to be on the podium. go subaru
Buck-O 03-21-2001 05:26 PM

I agree with Lafora, where Is Toshihiro Arai?

IMHO he is a FAR more skilled driver them Solberg, and on par with Martin. The only reason why Solberg is fast is becuase of the same reasons McRae is fast. Hes fearless, and he doesnt care about the car. My prediction...Solberd out before the end of Leg1 from an off, and "Burnsy" out by Leg2 with mechanical difficulties.
Peugeot and Ford will take this one. Most likly Sainze or Auriol on top.
WRXster 03-21-2001 05:29 PM

Silly of me to ask, but what country are we going to?
Billy 03-21-2001 06:28 PM

...to the picturesque region of Catalunya in south-west Spain, here we go!
Crashton 03-22-2001 07:16 AM

This is an all pavement rally. One of my faves. Hope the Scooby's show them their tail lights. Good luck to Prodrive!

This is such a kick-butt rally! One of my faves too. RenMaxi went to it last year and brought back some great pictures and Subaru stuff.

hate to break it to you but subaru doesnt have a chance citroen has it in the bag unless tommi pulls something out of his ##s
STORER 03-22-2001 07:46 AM

This is road rally. No one ever has it in the bag. Some pretty unusual things happen in this sport. Like last year when Burns totaled his car at a check point. Or one year the Focus caught on fire at one of the starts. Anything can and will happen. May the best car/driver/codriver win!

(i'm gonna get soooooo much flame for this..)
Bonzo 03-22-2001 10:41 AM

just read on speedvision, specatators are banned at this race! fear of foot/mouth desease spreading.
Buck-O 03-22-2001 10:51 AM

Whoa...thats gonna be weird watching the Catalunya with no spectators.

Imagine the famous bridge turn without any spectators?!

<IMG SRC="http://www.sp.dianet.or.jp/mmc/docs5/98wrc_e/98espana/img/lib/Burns2204.jpg" border=0>

For those that have never seen it before...this bridge runs along on that same course for about 2 miles, across a vally, then to a roud that runs around the side of a hill. Spectators line that ENTIRE bridge, and watch the cars run the switchbacks going down, and up the sides of the hill, then down a long straight headeding into the valley. Its gonna be WEIRD seeing that empty.

Jamie: Look at that picture....its "Burnsy" when he drove a REAL car. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lildevil.gif[/img]

From Speedvision.com-

An exclusion zone will be placed around the
mountainous area near Barcelona where the rally will
be run past dozens of farms. Police will stop British-
and French-registered cars, but will also refuse access
to British and French spectators traveling in rental
cars.

On one of the rally's timed stages all spectators will be
banned. The stage runs past a pig farm. Accredited
media, even from the UK and France, will not be
allowed access.

"At the beginning of the week the Spanish Minister of
Agriculture told the organizers of the rally that [they]
had to cancel the event but a compromise appears to
have been reached," said David Richards, promoter of
the World Rally Championship. "But foot and mouth is
making a big impact, and we must respect the local
farmers."

After the Rally of Great Britain, the Catalunya rally is
the most popular round of the championship with
British fans. An estimated 2000 spectators have made
the 1000mi journey to Spain. Being banned from
spectating has brought angry reaction from Britons on
the Costa Brava for the rally.

"I have rented a car and have not been anywhere near
a farm in England, so why should I be stopped from
going out on the rally?" said David Evans. "Besides, if
they stop rally fans, why not stop ordinary tourists?
Why just us?"
eastbaysubaru 03-22-2001 11:47 AM

I think the whole no spectators thing was B/S. I can't imagine any rally without spectators. It would be hard to say that you can't stand on the side of a road and watch. Either way,

GO BURNSY,

Here's the official report as sent from worldrallychampionship.com. You can go there and sign up for emails regarding the WRC. Great info. Anyways, here's the official news:

Following discussions with local farmers and government officials
over concerns about foot and mouth disease, the event organisers have
elected to prevent spectators from attending one of tomorrow's stages,
La Trona. Cars and motorhomes from France and Great Britain will also
be asked to remain outside an exclusion zone.

So they're only stopping one stage. They'll have their hands full. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

PURE EPI 03-23-2001 12:46 AM

Go Subaru!!!!! I hope things go better this time around!!

Christian
RenMaxi 03-23-2001 07:54 AM

gee look who finished first and second on the first day
10th Warrior 03-23-2001 07:48 PM

don't mess wit da jesus, man.
Shik 03-24-2001 12:04 AM

Only prediction I'm making is that Mr. Lapworth may have an easier time making a decision on who to nominate for points next time around.

FWIW, the "fearless" Solberg saw the lines the other cars were taking around a curve and decided to be more conservative and go wide... right into the loose stuff on the outside of the turn and slid the car into a ditch [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

But, any bets a week from now, someone will post " Gee, the new Impreza isn't doing very well. Solberg was out in the first leg" [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img] Granted, the other two are having some mechanical bugs, but it has nothing to do with the new car but more like new updates that would have came up on any car they were/are using.

Hey guys.

A fun thread to follow is this one. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/Forum1/HTML/010955.html

A few of the UK guys have gone to the rally in their Impreza's and are having one hell of a great time.

Burnsey has been joining them for some of the fun.

I have been in touch with them daily and there are no problems with spectating, prodrive are also being fantastic in supporting the guys out there.

So Jealous!!!

This is what my mate Mossman is travelling around Catalunya in, Awesome looking P1. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

Burns is still clawing his way back up ?

He is now up to 8th overall ?

He might make it up 4th or 5th if he lasts.
Shik 03-25-2001 06:07 AM

Sadly enough, looks like we will have to wait until May at Argentina for a decnet result(starting to sound like a broken record)
