rattling sounds in sti part 1

rattling sounds in sti
I have a couple different rattling sounds that are getting on my nerves. the worst is a very loud vibrating noise coming from the rear at low rpms. I assume it is the exhaust rattling something because it only happens around 1000 rpm. also, I hear a metal on metal jingling, fairly high pitched. I have narrowed part of it down the the zipper on the seat, but I can also hear some coming from the dash area. could it have something to do with my gauges (defi ambers) or newly installed head unit (ddx7015)? any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Remember that these cars lack a lot of the comfort items found in other cars such as excessive amounts of sound deadener... So you will hear rattling noises in the dash and the rear as will you hear your synchros whine...

Anyway my WRX does the same things.. I can hear all the same noises.. Just turn up your radio/CD/MP3/DVD/ IPOD whatever you have and relax...
Comes with the territory...

I understand, but the metal jungling sound is new, I just noticed it in the past few days. and it seems to show itself mostly when I hammer the gas. thats why I thought it might be related to the gauges.

my 05 sti rear window sounds like its making noise. only when its cold tho, friggin annoying!
volkl23 01-12-2005 07:34 AM

^^ ditto. Quite annoying. Oh well!
doghauler 01-12-2005 03:12 PM

same noise from rear when cold, but olso sometimes when regular temp. I just remind myself that it's not too loud.

I had the rear seat out a few weeks ago. drive around and listen to your fuel pump noise. very annoying!

if I had an axhaust, it would drown out any other noises, so that is my next step.

 I thought that I was the only one being driven crazy by those jingling zippers! I cut the little pull handles right off of them - even the ones at the bottom of the seat backs. Problem solved.

all the rattling sounds disappeared when i put my exhaust on :D

figured it out. the braided line from my oil press. gauge was rubbing on my head unit bracket. problem solved. as for the rest of the rattles, I have pretty much gotten used to those. I'm gonna have to do something about that seat zipper though.

Those noises suck. If you look on scoobymods.com there are instructions for removing part of the dash to coat some of teh plastic fasteners w/ something. He swears it helps eliminate some of the vibration. Sorry I couln'dt be more specific. I couldn't find the exact location of the instructions. I saw it a FEW MONTHS BACK.

Im not trying to start anything but these cars are what they are.Mine has a rattle here and there.I guess i think this way becouse my outher car that i have running now that will outrun my sti but not out corner it is a ground pounding v8.It has no cd player ect becouse you could not hear it anyway.I looked at a car the outher day that runs well and im sure is very very quite a CTS V.Any way all im saying is for my car to to GO STOP AND TURN like it does who really cares abought a few thing rattling around a bit.Brad

I'm a little dumber after reading that post. Ugh.
Chris Cuevas 01-14-2005 08:00 PM

I started to drown them out immediately after buying the car and registering here !!!! :D

I read all of Unabombers FAQs and said ok !!!!
V6TurboTA 01-14-2005 08:15 PM

I pretty much immediately gutted and dynamatted my entire STi. Top to bottom, front to back.
Comming from a WRX it was so loud in general it was damn annoying. I'm still adding more insulation before it put it back together  The more the merrier right? :D
I highly suggest sound deadening. simple to do and can make your STi go from sounding like a snare drum to sounding like a vault. (ok maybe not that much of a diff, but it makes a HUGE a huge diff if you do it. My car doesnt even sound like a subaru (aka hollow piece of fecal;) ) when you close the doors anymore.

05's have a touch of sound deadening, 04's have almost none at all.

Just a few spelling and grammar issues I had to work through, no biggie:)

my cruise control switch rattling makes me want to drive my STi off a cliff!

If the rattling really gets to you some time you can just give your STi to me and save its life.

Did the wrx's have that much deadening? On the freeway the thing seems pretty loud to me... Just how much does the wrx have over the STI in terms of sound deadening?

What dynamat did you use? I have checked their prices before and man they are expensive. Do they have any of the spray on stuff, or does that even work?
boost junkie 01-15-2005 11:37 PM

I finished putting dynamat on all 4 doors and switched to my snow tires and that made a HUGE difference. and i also cut off the zipper pulls on my seats, that was the one rattle that was annoying the hell out of me since its right next to my ear. now i just have the vibration from the rear, I assume its either the spare tire well cover or the license plate. looks like its time for more sound deadening.

Fix: Cruise control on/off button rattle.
my cruise control switch rattling makes me want to drive my STi off a cliff!
I am very sensitive to rattles, too. They drive me  The rattles in the STI take getting used to having had Hondas before. Anyhow, they can be fixed. I had a rattle on the driver side visor that I fixed by putting a small piece of adhesive-backed felt (the kind you buy to put on the bottom of thing so they don't scratch hard wood floors or furniture) on the inside surface of the visor retaining clip.

Fixing the cruise control rattle is easy but takes some finesse and dexterity, as the parts are small. Okay here goes:
1 The control stalk is held to the steering column by a small silver Phillips screw on the backside. Remove the screw and the stalk will come free though tethered by wires.
2 Flip the stalk over. Unscrew yet another, smaller, black Phillips. Remove the cover.
3 Inside you will see wires going to a small green PCB. Note how it is assembled for reassembly purposes; then slide it out.
4 Do this next part on a clean table as pieces are small and are easily lost.
5 Note how the ON/OFF button is assembled to the stalk main body by 2 snaps. You will need to disassemble the button. I did this by using a small flat bladed driver to unlatch one side and then doing the same to the other snap latch. Not the easiest thing to do but you should be able to get it free.
6 Carefully slide the button all the way out. Nested in the button you will see white grease a ball bearing.
7 Carefully remove the bearing trying to preserve the grease (the grease is probably not just any grease as many plastics are corroded by petroleum distillates so I assume it's a compatible formulation).
8 Finally we get to the problem part, a spring. A compression spring to be specific. The ball bearing and spring serve as a detent for the ON/OFF button. Unfortunately, some were not made stiff enough. We are going to extend the spring to increase its applied force.
9 Extract the spring and carefully stretch to make it 1/8" (3mm) longer than before. Thats the fix!
10 Carefully reassemble everything and you will be a happy camper and will be able to sleep at night. :disco:

Now I only have on rattle left in my STI and it's in the gearshift lever in the conical shaped part that the boot snaps around. I've disassembled and reassembled it and the rattle diminished for some reason but it's still there. It must be the spring in there, too!

Wow, thanks a ton for that. That ratttle was driving me crazy. I had my '03 for two years and never had any noises that bothered me, but within a week my '05 had developed the cruise control rattle. I'm glad there's an easy fix for it.

Anyone with an '05 STi get a rattle from the metal ring around the top of the shift knob?

Took me a while to finally figure out where the noise was coming from, and I didn't think it was all that loud... I pulled the knob off at a red light and couldn't believe how much quieter the whole car was..

:furious: driving me crazy...
AK_2002_WRX 03-13-2005 08:44 PM

i've got a weird rattle coming from the back part of the car...i'm thinking something in one of the rear doors, or the back window itself....it really bothers me when i'm going over gravel or bumpy roads....anyone else have the same kind of problem?
boost junkie 03-14-2005 02:12 AM

the rear deck definitely rattles, I'm gonna try to fix that this week. I also figured out that the rattling I thought was coming from my gauges is actually my shifter, so I'm also going to try to work that out this week when I install my new shift boot.
exhacker 03-14-2005 01:48 PM

You take responsibility for whatever happens, but....

I had a friend climb around in my car in a deserted parking lot with masking tape and some zip-ties. Screw sound deadening stuff everywhere... it's heavy. You just need a few key pieces, and zip-tie some things so they don't rattle.

I just had my friend put some tape over stuff, and then climb back to their normal seat, in case their weight was stopping the rattle too. Then, when we got close, I dropped them off and took a lap around the lot. It turned out to be less than we thought... this was on a WRX, though, not a WRX STi.

Cat-back exhaust noise gone from interior = 3 zip ties ( < 2 grams?? )
v/s
780 lbs of sound deadening where you can't even hear your contact patches anymore

hmmm....
