Don't go with these cameras. Go to www.supercircuits.com
It's the absolute best place (hands down for quality, prices, service) for microvideo cameras.

This is good for monochrome. It's almost $100, so it's rather expensive, but it's a pinhole lens (you could put it inside of the lock mechanism, making it entirely invisible from the outside) and is quite small.

The color cameras are expensive, but this is a good one. It separates the lens from the processing board, making it quite easy to install in awkward locations.

A good $100 color camera.

A little smaller, $120.
You can get monochrome cameras from SuperCircuits for less than $40. Trust me, I've worked in security before. They're simply the best company out there.

whats the picture quality like on those?
| MB38 | 05-16-2004 09:06 PM |
Depending on the camera, anywhere from VHS to better than MiniDV quality. Every camera has "380 lines" or "240 lines" or something of the sort associated with it. It'll look damn good from about 380 on up.

I'm just curious and I don't mean to flame, but what would be the point of this camera??
| ptsmalls | 05-16-2004 11:37 PM |
absolutly nothing.... i already have the input on my tv brain for one, i do some car shows, other than that, no benefit whatsoever.

If you record with these cameras is it generally legal to use the video in court? Lets say a cop pulled you over and said something that with the tape you can prove otherwise, will this hold up? I heard that it's ok as long as you don't record sound.
| NimrodBoz | 05-17-2004 10:12 AM |
as long as the cop who pulled you over is sitting right behind your trunk and enounciating well you could feasibly get incriminating evidence.
| scrappydoo | 05-17-2004 10:17 AM |
Let's say he says that he followed me for x amount of distance, but in the tape it shows that he pulled off the side of the road, do you guys think I could use that tape or do I need permission from the cop?
Sounds kinda strange but it happened to me before. I think the cop was hoping to find something when he pulled me over. I was cited for going 5 over the limit on I-5! He said he was following me for 1.5 miles but I saw him merging on the onramp.
If putting a camera in the front and rear of my car could prevent stuff like this then I'm all over it.

Couldn't you use it as another gauge for backing up?
| scrappydoo | 05-17-2004 10:18 AM |
I think this would be great for people with tinted windows at night too.

I doubt these little cameras do so well in low light situation. I haven't looked at the lux rating on any of them. If another car was behind you at night, then I would think there lights would overpower the camera as well. Nice thought, but you just can't get that kind of flexibility in a tiny package for an even remotely reasonable price.

Last time I checked, any video is legal in court. And sound should be as well. The funny thing is the movement for all cops to get cameras in their car as well. There have been so many incidents where a person claims to have been assaulted (or something else) by a cop after being pulled over, that the camera will also help the cop in the same regard.

The lux rating on most is 0.5, and there is at least one 0 lux camera with 6 integrated IR LEDs. The grayscale cameras have much better light handling, but any one of the cameras will react to IR LEDs as if they were spotlights.

assuming that the camera's pointed in a public area (as opposed to say, having your car in a living room), you can use it in court.
but no sound in a few states unless you get consent.

are you going to actually record or is this just like a monitor type of thing?
| scrappydoo | 05-19-2004 03:28 AM |
I'd actually record with it. Not a big deal, just rotate the tapes every day.
| ptsmalls | 05-19-2004 08:05 AM |
I highly doubt i'd record but it would be pretty badass if ya sent a screen shot of someones car to them in the mail, w. a letter to stop tailgating..lol.
