Which aftermarket seats? (Recaro, Status, Prodrive, NRG) part 1

Which aftermarket seats? (Recaro, Status, Prodrive, NRG)
Alright i'm in the process of searching for a nice pair of aftermarket seats to replace my crappy stock sti seats. The major complaint i have about the stockers is that it has horrible lumbar support. I tend to have pain in my lower right side after a 2+ hour drive.

The seats that i'm currently looking are:
-Status Monte Carlo FRP Racing Seat
http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/4375_4520_4676/products_id/13078

-Status Ring FRP Racing Seat
http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/4375_4520_4676/products_id/13081

-Status Monza FRP Racing Seat
http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/4375_4520_4676/products_id/13093

-Recaro Pole Position Seat
http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/4375_4520_4523/products_id/7856

-Prodrive Competition Seat
http://www.rallysportdirect.com/shop/prodrive-competition-seat-p-526.html

-NRG Carbon Fiber Seats Style 2
http://importimageonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_34_364&products_id=1441

I'm looking to spend no more than $1400 shipped on both seats. I'm leaning toward the Prodrives because they look really bolstered and comfortable; rallysportdirect also has free shipping on any $200+ order.

The Status Monza and Recaro pole look very similar...but with the Recaro having a bigger price tag.

Those with fixed back seats...how do ya'll like that for your dailydriver? Any annoyance? Did you regret not getting reclinable?

Thanks!

I wouldn't buy any of those seats unless you've sat in them. You'd be surprised at how uncomfortable some seats are and how you simply don't fit in others.

These are all fixed back seats, which are hardly the paragon of comfort for a street driven daily driver. I'd urge you to get a reclinable seat.

Well i've read on the seats for quite a while and the only complaints about fixed back is getting in and out. I sit fairly straight and i'm 5'9 weighing at 165lbs. I'm asian. haha.

sparco evo seats are a comfy fixed back seat. i've sat in some bride zeta fixed backs to, those where ok,but i have broad shoulders, i had to sit kinda weird in them... the prodrives are supposed to be pretty nice to. it is kind of a pita to get in and out of them, but once you're in it's not bad at all.

I hated getting in and out of the Sparco Evo seats. Once you are in you fit great but on a long trip it would suck when you wanted to shift your weight and stretch your legs out.

I would love to get some Evo Recaros. Talk about comfty.

love the Prodrives, look higher quality than others.

The NRG seats definately have the bling factor. I like them.
Russell Rogers 10-09-2006 08:05 PM

First of all don't buy anything from vivid racing. second recaro. the bigger price tag is for safety. never skimp on safety.
raamaudio 10-09-2006 08:08 PM

I have had quite a few seats over the years and for decent support and great long term comfort Recaro takes my vote easily in a recliner which I highly recommend. True race seats can be rather confining and not as well padded plus they usually do not have adjustable lumbar(I have used high grade bladders with some success(around $250 a pair though)

For a fixed seat I have been very happy with my Racetech RT1000's but the 4009's are even nicer, I may switch to them sometime in the future.

This is about the best advice you can/will get. Also, some seats "look" like they're well bolstered but are mush and vague. Then You'll find seats that look absolutely flat, yet have amazing support in all areas. Want a good example look at a set of Evo 8 Recaro seats. Those seats give great support and will hug you, though they don't look like they really would,..to a degree.

Also, as far as fitment is concerned with the car, it's good to look at brands that make seats that cater to the Subarus like Sparcos or Prodrive (Actually, I believe Prodrive's are made my Sparco).

Last but not least, never order from Vivid. They're terrible when it comes to product inventory, shipping, service and well, everything.
akinasdevil 10-09-2006 09:56 PM

Definitely try to test fit these seats. I've personally sat in a set of Chargespeed fixed seats and they were not comfy at all. I'm 6'1 and 160 lbs so I fit in most seats, but these things made me feel wide.

I've sat in a couple EVO's with the stock seats and they fit me perfectly. I've also sat in another set of Recaro's, and the guy who owned them told me they only sell the version he had in Japan. I believe him his car was JDM to the extreme. Anyway, they were reclinable and when you sit in them the seat felt like it contoured to your body...amazing seat. Just figured I'd share.

the NRG seats look nice.. but ive sat in them and i didnt like the positioning it gave... you really have to find people with these seats and sit in them to make a good decision
DocWyte 10-09-2006 10:31 PM

I really, really wouldn't go with a fixxed back seat in a daily driver. They're just not all that comfortable, esp on a longer trip. Don't even *think* about buying one unless you've sat in it.

I just spent the last 4 hours installing a set of Evo recaros in my '06 STI. IMHO, they're the best option out there for a nice seat for daily driving that won't break the bank.

did you have to mod the brackets? that sounds like a good idea
DocWyte 10-09-2006 11:03 PM

Here's my post with pics and install notes about it. You can't use the stock Lancer bracket or your stock ones...

I've had fixed-back Brides (Pros) for years and I'm old and they're not that bad. The Pros are little more than some thin foam covered with leather over a frame. Unless you have some serious back problems, they'll save you a lot of weight, and give great support. The Brides run narrow, but I'm a 34 waist (at least I keep thinking that) and they're fine. I won't lie and say long trips will be pleasant, but aggressive/track driving is so nice with bolstered seats and nice 4/5/6 point harnesses (Takatas on mine). You don't have to use your arms and legs to "brace" yourself. I can't close my door if I have my harness on (I can't reach the door handle). I run the Speedware harness bar for the harnesses and to effectively brace the middle of the car. I'd like to install a rollcage, but haven't gone that far yet. Red Brides + green Takatas = Christmas 365 days a year. I run the stock belts for all but track events. I was able to test my seats before buying because my friend had them in his Honda S2000. I paid $800 for the pair. Definately sit in the seats to try to get a "feel" for them.
The bigger price tag is 2 fold, 1. Recaro Pole Pos. is FIA cert. Status Monza not. 2. Recaro also has a long track record of safety, style, and proven quality.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.
02R6 10-14-2006 10:42 AM

I'm a big fan of the Recaro Pole Positions. I'm six foot nothing, 32 inch waist, and they fit like a glove.
Rootus 10-14-2006 10:59 AM

I'm really happy with my Recaro Sports. This is the seat that the OEM Mitsubishi Evo seat is based on. But a pair does exceed your stated budget (cost me $2200 for the whole thing).

But you really, really need to test fit yourself in a seat before you buy it. *Nobody* can tell you what seat will be comfortable. Height, weight, and waist measurements mean little.

Seats are an area where you get what you pay for. Part of it is fabric quality. And part of it is safety. The seat is the other half of your seat belt, so choose wisely!

raamaudio 10-14-2006 11:52 AM

Great advice Rootus, seats are an important part of safety.

I have an old pair of Recaros out of some Volkswagon, not even sure what model or year. I reupolstered them to match the mildly custom interior of my Tacoma, 160k miles ago. They have to be at least 10 years old and the fabric on them was fairly worn so what, maybe 250k miles of use? Hard to say exactly but I can say they are still some of the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in and I have gone from San Diego to Charlotte in 42 hours.

I had the SRD's in my SM class Turbo Matrix and they provided even more comfort and alot more support but the fabric was a bit hard to clean, even hair stuck to them like mad.

I have Racetech RT1000's in my Scion tC project car and have driven 300+ miles with pretty decent comfort for a full on race seat. I did use my Schroth harnesses for transiting to events and the Ractech 6 points at the events. I really like these seats but selling them in the car as part of a package deal.

Before I bought the RT1000's I sat in at least 8 different race seats and like the RT's the best. Mine were bought prior to being FIA approved, the only chane was they no longer include bottom mounting bosses, only side mounts now on the FIA version. Overall a great race seat, moderately priced, pretty comfortable, 14.3 lbs each.

Not sure if I would get a fixed back seat for DD... That being said I have all the mounting hardware for a side mounted Sparco seat, go buy a Sparco Evo or Evo 2 and buy my seat mounting (driver base, slider and side mounts). :)
