Recomend me a boost gauge

Im in the market for a boost gauge and I was wondering if you guys can give me some insight. I think that I am just going to go with a mech autometer sport comp to keep the price low, but if you really think that an electric is worth the few extra $$ I might just suck it up and spend it. Thanks for the help.

If you go with a mechanical gauge, be sure to pick up the boost gauge install kit from wrxtra.com. Its real high quality and then you won't get a messed up reading from a crappy install. The autometer comes with a plastic fitting and nylon hose which are far from desirable. I had an autometer but it crapped out on me, don't know if it was the gauge or the stupid nylon tube. Now i have a defi d-gauge (mechanical) with the install kit and it been working like a charm and i couldn't be happier. The nice thing about electric is no bringing any lines into your cabin (except electrical lines). They are also suppose to be a lilttle more reliable in cold weather, etc. Good luck!

I'd say defi, thats what i have :) where in ct are you? if you need help with the install let me know

You guys seem to like defi. I like the d-guage (mech) looks good, and not too much $$$. Now does defi include a decent t-fitting and hardware or do I need to purshase that seperate?

ive heared good things about omori and they match oem lighting and colors...but if u can afford defi, GET DEFI
| Homerisking | 07-06-2005 05:57 PM |
correct me if i'm wrong...I remember reading a while back that even with one defi gauge u would still need to purchase the seperate control unit..homer right?
| topend | 07-06-2005 06:23 PM |
i don't know if the d-gauges need a control unit, i know that the bf and link gauges do. and they come with all fittings and hardware needed. omori are good gauges also, i had a set in my old wrx.
| toke513 | 07-06-2005 06:31 PM |
From what I have read the d-gauges dont need it. The ones that do are called defi-link bf gauges.
| Focus4 | 07-06-2005 06:43 PM |
defi d-gauges don't need a control unit. They stoped producing the mechanical boost gauges, but there are still a good inventory of them left at dealers so act fast. I think its like $110. JSCspeed (nasioc vendor) carries them and are pretty good. It comes with a nice hose but the fitting is plastic and not a great size. I got the wrxtra install kit just because its real nice and its only an exta $12 for a perfect fit.

i just use a regular vacuum line to a brass coupler (the compression one with the olive) to the small thin clear line that came with my autometer phantom. now some say thats a crappyway to run it and yeah its not the best but i wouldn't say its inaccurate. it read pretty much identicle to the reading i would get on the laptop screen from my hydra nemesis via serial cable. the hydra uses a direct vacuum signal and we gave it a dedicated manifold signal so i know it was accurate.

yep those are the d-gauges. Its 52mm and will fit fine on the steering column. All you need is an autometer mounting cup for ~$15. The color matches the 350z perfectly, but doesn't look out of place on an sti...

If you want a gauge to match the WRX, you'd have to get the Defi Link series, which matches really, really well in color and bezel design/face. Or the color changing Omoris.
| Thumper23 | 07-08-2005 02:02 PM |
I'm buying some Defi gauges here soon (oil temp, EGT) but my question is, is it really worth it to spend money on a electronic boost gauge when the stock STi gauge works fine?
| Focus4 | 07-08-2005 02:05 PM |
The stock gauge is crap. It reads in a bizarre format and it doesn't match anything. It looks ugly too... The d-gauge boost is mecanical too so you can use the stock lines/wiring :)

Depends how accurate you want it and if you want it to match the interior. Also, consider if you're buying 2 or 3 gauges, and where you plan on mounting them ;)

I just installed a VDO vision series boost gauge in my car. It was inexpensive, seems to be spot on accurate and, from the pics anyway, matches the interior lights of my 04 even better than the Defis. The green is a bit more muted like the stock gauges. I got mine from www.summitracing.com.

I know that the autometer install stuff isnt supposed to be that great, but for now will it be ok for a stock car, or should I at least get a brass t-fitting or should I spend the $20 for the www.wrxtra.com install kit?

iirc i payed roughly $500ish (less than $550)for everything. did the boost myself and then just had a shop weld the egt bung to my header.
edit: mounted the control unit in the armrest. will soon atempt to mount the control unit under the center vents and next to the cup holder.
