Can Subaru still win the manufacturers title ?

Looks bleek.
Bonzo 08-13-2001 10:49 PM

ya Petter was prolly already hearing his boss asking, now what did you hit?

CM was pretty luckly those ppl cleared out quick when his front wheels went all weird

That ditch was one of them times when you just tighten up and say oohhhhh $$$$$hhiitt

I like how the cars are set-up here, all nice and high for total bullet proof smashing fun. The next race in Finland will also be epic. Nothins better on TV!

Its on again in a little while:p

Correction- those ppl were pretty lucky!
pio!pio! 08-14-2001 01:44 AM

LOL did you see how fast they ran out of the way!

And on the way into the valley..it's as if they were traveling the edge of a knife! A drop on both sides....damn
prana 08-14-2001 01:54 AM

Great rally! Subaru didn't fare so well (every works car broke?)..
remarcable 08-14-2001 03:37 AM

Solberg: "Grap on my tired!"
RA 08-14-2001 03:56 AM

Solberg has a pretty foul mouth, every first word is f*** and got censored. haha

Tommi is DA MAN
J Colman 08-14-2001 08:35 AM

That sucked when that dude hit that massive ditch because he was exhausted and not paying attention. That poor old navigator looked like he was in a world of pain.

Cool rally over all though, I like how it had rained and made it muddy.

Bonzo 08-14-2001 09:16 AM

I stand corrected, the ppl are much luckier:eek:

my kid even knew what Petter said:p Keep it up it gives all those stodgy rally racers a bit of a personality.
auricom 08-14-2001 09:59 AM

aw my first rally on speedvision, pretty cool, solberg was funny, "I didn't hit anything!!!!!"
ToJo 08-14-2001 10:40 AM

I'm liking Petter Solberg more and more. He's a great driver, but he doesn't take himself too seriously. I get the feeling that his codriver doesn't really like him though, especially after he suggested that he go sit on the trunk
Ghostrider 08-14-2001 12:21 PM

that was the best safari rally ive seen very exciting you didnt know who was gonna crash out
RacerX 08-14-2001 12:32 PM

My favorite was the part where the Skoda driver, I think it was Armin Schwartz, nosed into that ditch at like 100 mph. The commentary was great, especially the part where the commentator translated for the navigator who told Schwartz to slow down twice then, after the impact said:"you are a very stupid man". Ouch.

I thought Burns was about to cry when he was interviewed after his Sube went out. Too bad b/c he has done well in the Safari Rally in the past. I hope for Subaru's sake, he can pull of another victory or two before the year is out.
Travis R 08-14-2001 02:43 PM

One of my favorite shot was actually of the old Celica All-trac. Where it sunk into all the mud and was almost completely submerged. Oh that is what the snorkle is for. ;)
I'm glad for Skoda too. How long have they been doing WRC? They finally got on the podium. Their team manager was just about in tears.
remarcable 08-14-2001 03:30 PM

I thought it was a great race, although they should have not gone w/out 'copter coverage.

Those ruts/rocks/ditches were insane... I am surprised Makkinen made it without any major failures.

Luck? Or a good driver?
scooby snack 08-14-2001 03:56 PM

That was an intense rally!!

Burns did look totally heart-broken, and I can't say I blame him.

Petter rocks!

What up with the Subies breaking though?

At least McRae's Ford went out too.

I think it was crazy when they went without the helicopters on that one stage. Luckily no one got hurt, it was bad judgement. Too many animals and stray traffic in Africa to risk it.

Totally awesome rally though, that's the way it should be. Lot's of mud, huge ruts and holes, and 200kmh straights. YEEE-HAWWW!

edit: Oh ya, and I WANT A SNORKEL!!! Kick ass! :D
jlyttle 08-14-2001 04:54 PM

Makkinen won because he is a good driver AND had lots of luck. There were quite a few great drivers knoked out by equipment failure.
ChrisW 08-14-2001 06:35 PM
I can't believe the wheel just popped right off...yikes!
I was amazed when they showed the split in the roof of Makkinen's car!.. I knew thse cars took abuse, but daaaaammmm!
scooby snack 08-14-2001 06:46 PM

I also liked the video clips of Colin out on his boat water skiing and jet skiing. "It helps with the job." I WANT THAT JOB!! Actually, if I got to travel all around and play in the water I think it would help with my concentration at my job too! :D

And I still want a snorkel!!!! You never know when you might need to drive through a meter of water!!
Muqeem 08-15-2001 01:14 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but are you talking about the Kenyan Safari Rally? If you are, where can I get my hands on a video of this year's rally? I am dying to see it.

Interestingly, I was born and raised in Kenya and whilst I was there, for as far as I can remember, we used to follow the rally for the entire route, going into the special stages where many people dare not. We managed to get into some really tight spots but the terrain there has an excitement that is really hard to describe. I miss that so much.

Needless to say, my family used to rally in the 60's and early 70's, which is probably why we never missed any rally. I personally did some training rallies in the 90's, but that is another story. Sadly, ever since I have moved to the USA, I have missed all of the rallies, having seen the last one in 1997.

Any info as to where I can acquire or view the videos will be highy appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Muqeem

Makkinen is of course a great driver but hes also a master at destroying cars. I think it was luck. Both that his car didnt split in half (Makki and co driver holding hands to keep car together, that would be cool:D ) and that McRae and Burns were taken out since theyve won it the past 4 years.

So, uh, should we let Burns go? I think something better could rise from the ashes. A more reliable car could help.

edit for grammer
mhj 08-15-2001 06:18 PM

I felt sorry for Solberg. It was funny when he said "And I didn't hit anything!" No crying over his loss like others sometimes do ;)
pio!pio! 08-15-2001 08:28 PM

So does this put Makinnen, McRae and Sainz (was it Sainz?) in a 3way tie for most wins?

Muqeem: we watch it on Speedvision. It's available on cable TV in some areas or with DirecTV
