Rust on Seat Brackets

Does anyone else have rust on the brackets that hold thier seat to the frame. I have an 04 STi and i notices yesterday that the bracket that holds my seat to the frame is rusting............
| garface | 03-01-2005 05:37 PM |
Yup. I've had 2 sets of STi seats and both had rust on the bottom, as well as my stock seats. Nothing terrible, but it was there. I guess due to the high moisture levels you can get in the car plus maybe from water you bring in and splash around with your feet. My Recaro SRD's don't have any though, but you'd have to really look to find it.

If car is under warranty, these should be replaced. I had my driver's side replaced recently, fully covered.

mines rusty.
04 WRX seat brackets & now,
04 STi seat brackets
both are rusty just by the one closest to the trunk release on the floor so i guess its from water my feet carry in :furious:
Im going to pull the seat out one day, sand it off, and repaint it to seal it from the elements, the rust looks gross

I have an 02 and had rust on my stock seat brackets. I then swapped in a set of 04 STI seats w/ brackets and they too had rust on them from the previous owner. Sounds like a common thing...

It's been a few years, so have you fixed your rusted seat brackets?
I have the exact same issue. I want to sand and repaint it, but I'm also concerned about rust spreading to the floor under the carpeting.

Just had my driver side replaced on my 2007 2.5i. The paint on the front two mounting points was completely gone and it was bubbling all the up to the slide mechanism. Figured it would be replaced under the rust warranty, being the car is just under 3 years old and bracket was quite rusty, but it wasn't. luckily I had and additional warranty on the car that took care of things like this. The total was about $120. I'll have to pull the bill to see how much the bracket was by its self, but I know it wasn't over $100.

edit: nvm free brackets!

06, same issue. only on the driver seat. im guessing the salt/moisture wicked up from the carpet.

My 05 is rusted pretty badly too. I'm not surprised though, I track tons of snow in my car :(

Me too. Rust on both seat brackets. And rust on a spare driver's seat that I bought as well. Oh well.

get a wire brush and some rustolium...................not hard;)
| caino | 10-15-2010 12:20 PM |
Slight rust starting on them on our '07 2.5i wagon - just what classicaddict says - plan is to pull the seats after winter, wire wheel, and rusto-o-leum.
| QuestSHP | 10-15-2010 12:30 PM |
its not that its hard but you would think something with 30k miles would have held up a little better especially since subarus are meant for inclement weather.
| notjustforshow | 10-15-2010 04:18 PM |
Mine did this after the first winter (15k on the dash).
I'm told its normal but I was paranoid I had a phantom leak that was pooling water somewhere there lol.

06 - exact same problem. Living where I do, I figured it goes with the territory, but I guess it's more of a common problem to the car, not necessarily the environment.
Are there any issues with the air-bag wiring that anyone knows of when you remove the seats to sort this issue? I know there are a bunch of wires (real technical term, I know) under the front seats, but I never looked closely to where they are attached or how the detach?

seriously.......if this is one of the only issues youv had in 30k then its a damn fine car. so the car has some surface rust on the seat rail....big deal. my wrx has 130k on it and the only big issue i had had so far is my center diff bearings started grinding and making terrible noises........$130 in bearings and a few hours with a buddy of mine (its hard to take depth measurements with a sideways trans and a shaft with tapered bearings lol) and im back on the road. and yes, i have the rust too. my seats haven't fallen out yet.

Clean the rust off, then use POR-15 and top coat it with some tough enamel. The por15 will seal out oxygen, and the topcoat will block uv rays that break down the por15.
| vms150 | 10-20-2010 08:08 PM |
How much UV light do you really thing get under the seats to where the enamel top coat is needed.

yup mine were rusted at 8,000 miles.:(

I just noticed some rust starting on the front rail end next to the door a month or so ago. The car is over 4.5 years old with a little over 42k miles on it.
I've seen this problem on other Subaru's and other models and makes so it is not uncommon.
Time to loosen the seat, tape things off, sand it a little, use some rust-kill, prime it, and paint it.

Hi all,
I just got a 2006 impreza 2.5i and it has this problem. My questions is, should I remove the seat and the carpet to paint the brackets with antirust paint? Do you think it is DIY project for an afternoon?
Thanks!

In order to take the carpet completely out you would need to take out front, rear seats, center console and the plastic trims around the doors. Not difficult, just a little time consuming if its your first time doing so. That being said, I say go for it. A little time will go along way if you want to do this right.
