Cool thanks. Front lip and a rear lip is pretty much the same as both sideskirts so I'll order 2.
imprezive one 03-22-2003 05:03 AM

hmmm... Let me know how that paint process goes. Did you order primer or clearcoat as well? How many cans did it actually take and what was the total cost in the end? This could be a very cheap alternative to getting my sideskirts painted by a shop or buying the oem painted ones. Also interested in how your car looks with the orciari lips. I'm thinking about getting their front lip. Keep us posted! Thanks.

I'm going to order two cans of color and one can of clear coat. No primer. Just gonna clean it, sand it, spray it a few coats, then a couple clear coats.

Here is an old pic of the lip on my car

MAD REX,

I wouldn't advise doing it yourself. Actually, let me clarify. I wouldn't recommend CLEAR COATING it yourself. The canned clear that you can buy, (re. ANY clear in a spray can) will NOT hold up to the abuse that the front lip will take. After one or two highway runs, you will see VERY bad chips, and rough spots appear. If it's 'glass, it will chip nastily. You CAN save yourself ALOT of CASH by painting it yourself, then bringing it to a shop to be cleared. To give you an example, can clear makes a sponge type protection on the paint. That is, porous, and flexible. Sprayed clear creates a plexiglass type protection. And by that, is solid, and hard. That is mainly do to the actuator you mix into it before spraying. Not to mention you get a MIRROR finish this way.

If you have any other questions, please shoot me a line.

Cheers

Will

Even if I put on 10 layers? :p

How much would I expect to pay for just getting the pieces clearcoated by a professional?

This is the stuff I was going to use

"Seymour Gloss ClearcoatLong Lasting Protection.

Smooth Finish.

Non-Sag Formula

Heat Resistant

Hard-Gloss Finish

Resists Gas and Solvents

12 oz. Spray Can

You da man!
SCOOBYDOOD 03-23-2003 06:48 AM

Probably 1 can is enough for your lip. It's enough for 3-4 good thick coats
willguidry 03-23-2003 06:06 PM

To get the clear sprayed on only should only cost $50 bucks. IF that. Good investment too. Just call local bodyshops, and tell them you can wait till they are clearing something else in the shop to do yours. Generally that will help to keep the price down.

Dude! I'm liking the mesh in the bumper! I put black mesh on my top grill, but couldn't figure out how to mount it well underneath. How'd you do that? Looks nice! :)

I've since painted the mesh black...

But it came with the grill and it attaches to the grill but screws in the back of it.

That is the Ociari WRC Look Grill with lower grill that CC-B (Eddy) sells.

I have the set and am thinking about selling it

Haven't seen you at a meet lately? We're getting together tonight, as a matter of fact right now at Hooters on 76th...damn, I'm late!

I just got my whole "kit" to paint the sideskirts on my '03 WRX Wagon from paintworld. It cost about 100 for everything including shipping. That included 3 bottles of paint, 2 bottles of clearcoat, 2 bottles of flexible primer, wax/tar remover/cleaner, and a scuff (red) pad...
All in all, it's considerably less than a local body shop would charge. I talked to 2 bosy shops and
1. I didn't trust them to do it right (they said not to even bother). I guess they're not interested in doing business, and with an attitude problem like that, who'd want to use them anyway.
2. When I finally DID coersce a figure it was in the 200-400$ range. Ya, right.
There's an excellent post on how to do this yourself in these forums. Be anal, take your time, apply plenty of coats in thin layers and let each one dry before applying the next, and you're car will be rock-star material by the time you're done.
Just do it yourself and do it right.
I'm going to document my whole process and post it afterwards for people to use. I'm planning this will probably take the better part of 2 weeks to do it right.
Werd.

He said he got a 'paint kit' from that website to paint his stock sideskirts. Not a body kit.
thetikler1 03-26-2003 09:12 PM

would you advise clear coating yoru own sideskirts or having those done by a pro too? they probably won't take as much abuse as the front lip???
He said he got a 'paint kit' from that website to paint his stock sideskirts. Not a body kit.
OH my fault.
Anyone ever think about sanding down the part that is being painted first?
willguidry 03-27-2003 11:20 AM

I cleared the sideskirts myself, but will have them repainted and cleared this spring by a pro.

No doubt. The difference is NIGHT/DAY between can clear and pro clear.
MAD REX 04-03-2003 12:41 PM

Well the paint is here.

I'm kinda nervous now :o
sonicblue 04-03-2003 02:28 PM

FWIW, don't be nervous. Give it a good cleaning with some degreaser (if it's new, skip this step). Then give it a good rubdown with some rubbing alcohol. Then use a red scuff pad - you can get them at most auto stores, it's like a soft steel wool. It doesn't really sand, but it will take off any kind of finish coating that may be on. After you do that, rub it down with the rubbing alcohol again and make sure that dries/evaporates. What you should be left with a very smooth, dull surface. I would then apply some "adhesion promotor" - it's basically a clear primer. I followed that with gray primer (btw, I used this process for a ZS-replica grill that came in raw ABS black plastic). I used the grey primer because the paint color shows truer than on a black background. Also, I got my paint from paintworldinc.com, and, yes, also can clear. About 3-4 coats of paint and 3-4 coats of clear and it looks awesome - I'm hard-pressed to find any difference in color/finish, even though the bottom of my grill is right next to the OEM finish of the bumper. Remember, it's all in the prep and you can never coat too lightly.
DragII 04-03-2003 09:28 PM

be sure to post pics when you finish!

What is the best way to remove the old peeling paint?

Sandpaper? What grit?
