fookiethedookie 09-19-2002 04:16 PM

shaving door handles

does anyone have any pics of a wrx with shaved door handles?
also i was wondering how much it usually costs to do a mod like this.
any opinions?
Schleppy 09-19-2002 05:48 PM

I have heard it costs about $500 a door, or thereabouts for a really nice job and remote system...

It's a pretty pricey mod, but looks cool...
fookiethedookie 09-19-2002 06:30 PM

a wrx with shaved handles would be so smooth:D
REXOne 09-19-2002 11:42 PM

I know a guy that shaved the handles off his CL. I'll see if I can find out how much it cost. His car looks sweet. Nice clean look.

I had it done on my Nissan, and I wouldn't recommend it. It might look cool, but if you ever want to sell the car, you'll have a hard time. And, if your battery dies and you can't get into the car... well.

I was considering shaving the rear door handles...cause I hate passangers and it would look cool. kinda like a GC8. ;) How do you guys think that would look?

I've seen a few cars that had all the doors except the driver's door shaved. It still looked pretty good and eliminated the problem of getting in if the electrical system went wacky or the battery died.

well its about 150-300 for the door poppers and then you have to either bondo or sheet metal the door handle holes. i thought about doing it with my car however there are 2 problems:

1- if battery dies you gotta break a window to open your door
2- theres a external release on the exterior of the car makinig it easy to break in

I had shaved handles in my integra and constantly i would leave the car running and close the door and then walk 2feet away and scream F_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _!!!!!!!! Then get a ride home.... get hte folling utensils... and

Take a door wedge... spread apart the jam at the top of the window.... and a coat hanger to press down the power window switch.... It sucked the kid i sold it to LOVES it...... lol

ITS A NICE SHOW LOOK ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT A CLEAN LOOK BUT ITS NOT REALLY WORTH IT UNLESS YOU GO ALL SHOW. IN A DAILY DRIVER NO WAY. I DID MY REAR (SHEET METAL FILLED) AND THAT WAS A PAIN IN THE AZZ AT TIMES AND LOOKED REALLY UNEVEN SINCE I HAD HANDLES IN THE FRONT

Also in the winter when your door freezes shut you know have nothing to pull on and the door pops are not strong enough.

Trust me my budy had his car done and last winter one day he could not get into his car cause the doors froze shut.
ImprezaRSX 09-20-2002 03:04 PM

All those problems are easily solved.
Have a remote system in the trunk.
1. you need a key to get in trunk
2. Keep a small 12Volt motorcycle battery in trunk with two insulated leads to the drivers side door solenoid relay. For those days when you kill the battery on accident.
3. Use silicon spray on your weatherstripping like you are SUPPOSED to do in the winter anyway
4. Mount a remote button outside that only works when the key is on- if you are really dumb enough to walk away with it running.
brazymstrp 10-18-2002 06:19 AM

hmm....how about instead of using door pops, you just get the window roll unit and have it roll down the windows so you cound unlock it yourself. This would solve the door freezing problem. Doesn't look as sleek when the door pops out for ya. But imagine the windows rolling down, that would be sweet too. except when it's raining:D

or you could just hop in Dukes style

I want to shave the handles on my OBS, just not the rear hatch, that way it's easy to get in that way if I must, and won't really look uneven or anything.

Thats what I like to see, someone who looks at a problem and fixes it instead of saying how bad of an idea it is. Mad props homie :D

i like the idea of having the window roll down unit....but what do you do if the battery dies??

TonyWRX 10-18-2002 04:21 PM

i believe that yellow sedan had something to do with the NOPI nationals or something....i remember it too...
Tedwrx 10-18-2002 07:59 PM

There is a guy with shaved handles where I live. It looks pretty good shaved.
aspera 10-18-2002 08:19 PM

Shaving the rear doors doesn't sound too bad. I wonder how much weight you'd save. I guess you could transfer the rear door handles to the front, so no lock is showing. Will that work?
ImprezaRSX 10-18-2002 08:26 PM

It would probably work, but you really aren't going to save much in weight if anything at all. Mainly because you have to install extra stuff.... solenoids, springs, wiring and that all adds weight.
dRu888 10-19-2002 04:50 AM

my friend did that...

...then he went & locked his keys in his car one day and the AAA guy had a hell of a time trying to open the door :p

...eventually they got it open ;)

i think it would look kinda weird on a sedan though...
