where exactly in NY will this be?
| RB5 Clone | 03-08-2006 03:50 PM |
Centered around Monticello, about 90 min north of Big Apple.
not far south of Binghamton.
the area hosts lots of great squiggly tarmac roads, many crests and jumps. spectators hanging out in their yards, bonfires, parties, they love to see the rally cars blasting past.

I'm in. Looks like there's going to be a lot of competition. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Robert and Pete, with my monstrous 110 hp on tarmac I don't think I'll provide much picture fodder, but my daughters will be spectating again so you will have something to shoot.

Do not be fooled by the above ref to modest HP. This guy is crazy fast in a Golf. Commitment? Bravery? Perhaps has a self-preservation gene lacking? Ummm, maybe he's just a darn good droiva.

Hey, I was fishing for compliments on my daughters not my driving. Thanks though, you're not so slow yourself, especially for an ex-codriver.

P2 Alex Kuhner USA Subaru Impreza L NC Rally
Peter Monin USA
:D Never seen myself on an entry list before! I've got just 110hp too, but I'm powering all 4 wheels with it - lotta good that will do me on tarmac! I guess I'm a shoe-in to win P2... would someone else please register for that class?!? I don't see why anyone would ever run a non-turbo Subaru in Super Stock, why compete with WRXs when you don't have to? How does Arce do in SS?

AK--don't count on winning P2 just yet...rz may well come out of the woodwork. ;)
You may be faster than you know...John C won his class in Targa Newfoundland with the 1.8 against 911s, Vettes, and Vipers. Just don't lift or you'll have a helluva time getting back up to speed again.
Emlio and his N/A 2.5 do just fine in SS, usually top 3 and has won the class several times when the WRXes break.

I'm in P2, although it'll be my first rally. Consider me trophy fodder.

Per - I'm in P2 and it's my first rally too. What do you have under the hood? I still have the bone stock 1.8L. I want to know who this Brian Rutledge guy is - he clearly has the experience advantage over us, and I assume he has a 2.5L, but I'm not sure.

Don't sweat about who has more hp or whatever.
Main thing is that you N/A guys ARE showing up to play. How else does somebody gain real experience? Remember, you get to drive like hooligans...and get cheered for it! Life is good sometimes....
See y'all there. I'll be in silver WRX wagon, Car 0.
Cheers,
Dave G

Box stock 2.2 liter, although I am helped somewhat with 4.11 gears. I'm actually running the RE92 tires and wheels from my Saabaru. I started to consider R compounds and then realized that it could be 20 degrees or it could be 50 degrees...it could be sunny, it could be snowing. Decided that my first rally should be low and slow anyway.

Actually, I take that back, it's not box stock. I've got a Fram Air Hog air filter. I'm sooooo going to smoke you.
:-)

| akuhner | 03-28-2006 04:51 PM |
 I have a 4.44 final drive, that smokes your 4.11! I'll be on borrowed Falken Azines that are too big and heavy for my car (and borrowed seats, borrowed belts... hum.. I see a pattern here!).
Dave, of course the primary thing is that we are there and having fun! We are talking about things of secondary importance here!

(walks out on limb, takes deep breath before actually saying something NICE about RE92s on NASIOC...)
GRMper
ya know, for a variable surface tarmac event like RNY, those RE92s are not an altogether bad choice. They're tough, can deal with the gravel scattered about by mad corner-cutting RHD Evos, and have nice progressive breakaway. Dealing with gravel-slickened pavement will be a major issue here, keep yer eyes peeled.
As for the progressive breakaway, you can be a Big Dorifta boy, and look like you meant to! This is very forgiving behavior for rally drivin' on tarmac.
Plus, the RE92s are ideal...mainly because they're what you have.

Yea, I've actually seen them do some pretty impressive stuff in gravel and mud too. Opie swears by them, not at them, around here.
I'm also bringing a random set of 205/50R15s mounted on the stock 15x6s. They're new, but not R-compounds, just decent summer tires, in case it's dry and clean.

Heh, don't count on it. May be dry but definitely won't be clean. Gravel on the tarmac is a given. It'll be the biggest issue drivers have to deal with at Rally NY. Pay attention on recce, because the Irish guys like to cut even with their SUVs.

Well, at least I'll have some option if something happens to the Saab wheels/RE92s other than my R700s.
So here's a question for you...the Supps state, "no gravel cars."
What's that?

gravel cars, revealed

gravel cars are rally prepped cars that teams send out with separate crews to sharpen up recce notes. sometimes the gravel crews write the notes for a section, then later the team itself recces on those and adapts things to their own liking.
RNY won't allow you to recce in the race car unless it's unmarked. think, "recce in the haul truck" or "beat on some poor unsuspecting rental sled."
I think the term "gravel cars" originated on tarmac rallies, when teams sent out cars just before the stages to mark where gravel had been scattered onto the pavement, especially on fast bends.

Thanks for the revelation! ...like a Pre-Runner, although that's for baja.
We'll be doing recce in our Pathfinder then!
