shift knob recommendation?

I'm looking to upgrade my 03 wrx shift knob but can't decide on which one. I want one that is small because I have small hands (something like the oem s2000 one). i love the way the oem momo knob looks but it seems like it's really bulky and big. i heard the oem 04 sti shift knob is small. will this knob work with my 5spd tranny? comments plz... thanks...

You probably want the STI ti- shift knob. STI OEM is just the WRX knob with red stiching. It is small and similar to the S2k knob in size and shape(well, sort of). I personally have a perrin shift knob, it is really low and a small ball that sits on top of the shifter. Not exactly skinny, but I love the way it looks.

If you want one similar to the S2K, I would echo your inkling of going with the 04' or 05' STi knobs.
Here's an 04' for sale:

And here's a recent thread with all sorts of different types of knob :)

While the STi knobs will probably fit your threads, they're configured differently. The STi transmission has a lock-out ring for reverse, and there's a slider on the shifter stalk that you lift up to shift into reverse -- and lifting it up slides it into a slot on the base of the STi shift knob. What this means is that the base of the knob isn't tapered nicely into the stalk itself. So...you may want to look more at 5MT-specific knobs. HPH

I would suggest the cusco shift knob. It's small, light and I have seen like one other person with it on here, other than me. Plus it's white, talk about standing out in a dark interior. Just my .02

I strongly sugest against getting the Momo knob. It came on my 05 and I had to order the stock leather knob ad switch it out. It looks alright and feels somewhat comftorble (sp) but the thing gets so f'ing hot in the summer that it is practically impossible to drive. Even when I covered it with a shirt or hat it was still way to hot to shift.

Shane
Thirded. I had a Subaru/Momo airleather and went back to the KB. The (including a 3/4" height reduction) and good weight make it feel just right :)

fifth for the kartboy. mine's black with the red sticker... really great feel, good weight...
my only quarrel is that their kartboy logo is a 6MT shift pattern... everyone's like "Whoa you have a six speed?!?!?!?"
get the kartboy with a trust sticker:devil:

If you want something small, the greddy counterweight might be what you are looking for. It is smaller than the kartboy, weights twice as much, and is about 1/4 inch shorther than the kartboy. I had one and it was nice, but I wanted one bigger, so I got the kartboy. They are both good, so itboils down topreference. If the greddy was bigger, I would have kept it.

I sixth (?) the Kartboy. I bought it fully expecting to go with something else eventually, but liked it so much that it stayed on.

Shift Knobs for 2004 Forester XT P - Automatic Trans

Anyone know what type of Shift Knob is fully compatible with the 2004 Forester XT P (Auto Trans)? I would like to avoid using a universal type knob and instead use something that screws on directly. Cost is not a factor; I want the best. Any ideas...? In advance, thank you. :)
Anyone know what type of Shift Knob is fully compatible with the 2004 Forester XT P (Auto Trans)?
It wouldn't be a "shift" knob then, would it?
| srf | 10-17-2004 01:29 AM |
I had the MOMO half leather half aluminum knob and it split in two pieces after a year or so. I'd never get a metal shifter, even in Seattle those things will scorch your hand. Leather for me.

i didn't like the kartboy when i first put it on. then i did some "spirited driving". now there is no way i would change to anything else. its is smaller than the stock one and the perfect weight. it fits in my hand perfectly. haven't missed a shift yet.
Hey... i dont wanna hi-jack but how is the Titanium STi shifter?
If it's the "piston" one.. eh. I can't see how it would be comfortable. You see a lot of them in the FS: forums. Get a Knuckleball, you can't go wrong :)

I like it - I am not a big fan of the larger shift knobs - the STi knob was about the perfect size. I didn't find it to be overly hot, even in the summer here after sitting in the sun all day. I am currently using a Subaru carbon fiber one, which I really like. Personally, I think the larger knobs encourage you to pull on the transmission harder, or rest your hand on the knob while driving, neither of which are particularly good for the transmission. (not sure I get the whole "heavier is better" thing for the shift knob - you aren't moving it so far/fast that you would even be able to tell the difference - it's almost comical when people say the transmission shifts more smoothly with a heavier knob)

The Legacy GT and WRX auto's utilize the same threads M10x1.25. It's possible that the Forester is the same. The Legacy's Auto shift knob (35126AG03A) is pretty cool compared to the WRX's.
