Spoiler not Wing

After looking without success to purchase a trunk mounted spoiler, I decide to go ahead and build my own.
The goal was to get a simple lip type spoiler that added a nice clean look and some aerodynamic improvement.
Since I recently have been studying aircraft composite construction, I utilized a moldless technique that the homebuilt aircraft guys use.
Building something like this does take a commitment but sometimes to get what you want, you have to jump in there and do it. It certainly was a good learning experience and I was happy with the end result.
Cheers,

Hmmm... props for fabricating something on your own. Don't take this too badly, but in my opinion it looks anything but "nice and clean". In fact, I think it looks horrid.
But, and there's always this, if you like it, it doesn't really matter what the hell I think.

i'm with hef on this one. its cool that you have the know how and ability to design and fabricate your own stuff. maybe if it extended to the end of the trunk lid and looked a little more integrated into the deck, it would flow (aesthetically) better. but if you're happy with it...i am too. nice work!

I gave you mad props for creating your own spoiler. IF your goal was to keep it nice and clean I think you need to go back to the drawing board. If you want clean than you have to make it look like its apart of the car. Maybe its a good start to something nice.

Great job in making it yourself. :D
But I have to say that there's reason's why car manufacturers pay designers top dollar to design parts for their cars... to make it look good besides the functionality. It looks like a table leg on your trunk edge. Or more like a door/ceiling molding.:( But that's my opinion.
You are happy with it.. I give u props for even takling the project and making all that urself.:)

let it touch both ends of the trunk and you got yourself a marketable product other then that very well thought out and props for a DIY thing

Yes it certainly is about personal preference, one man's beauty is another man's beast!
For me, I wanted to have something definitely different and similar to the spoilers on the mid-80's BMW's or the new Audi TT.
I am a minimalist and did not want too much weight to drag around, also it had to be "Clean" aerodynamically.
Many if not most of the wings put on cars do not work, in fact they add a lot of weight, a lot of drag and in the case of a wing set at the wrong angle of incidence they create lift.
If I did my preliminary testing right, this spoiler will reduce the lift present on the top of the trunk and at the same time create very little drag. ( When I get some numbers I will post).
Thanks for the complements on the fabrication and I agree that maybe extending the ends would add a more pleasing and less "Edgy" look.

Sorry about the error message, the data pipe to skoshiracing.com is like a soda straw so if too many access at once this will happen.
Please try again later.

I think it does not flow very well with the vehicle overall. Perhaps if it extended to the edge of the trunk lid. But anyway's you MADE that??? I give you you much props for that. If I tried to do that, it would look like a kindergarteners pasta project!

I'm with the others. Looks too tacked on IMO. That's awesome that you can make them but it doesn't look right w/the rest of the car. Perhaps if it was more like an M5 or Mine's spoiler it'd fit the bill better.
Just my 0.02

You a surf-board maker or something? I like your technique, but like everyone else here, think that said spoiler looks like crown moulding from Home Depot stuck to your car.
| AndyWRXWG | 11-01-2003 11:00 PM |
I think it would look pretty good if you extended it all the way accross and once you pass the trunk lid seam start sloping down and sweeping back toward the front of the car and basically fade it into the body. then it would look finished and clean right now just looks like a great idea in the making. I think you're on to something here I've heard countless sedan owners that want something like this instead of the large wings keep up the good work and you never know you might just have your own business before you know it.

It sounds like I may need to take a few semesters at Pasadena Art Center College of Design!
I would definitely be interested in anyone who can sketch up a few spoiler designs and post them.
Are there any takers out there?
Cheers.

Go check out the tommy kaira one. Also I know some audi a4 owners use the e46 m3 spoiler on they're cars. You could check out, I know there is a tutorial on audiworld.com. Eitherway I am impressed by your exicution, but unfortunatly it looks like a table leg.

you should buy teh mines lip spoiler...
| 9o7wRx7o9 | 11-02-2003 01:14 AM |
Yes I agree as far as this goes...bring it all the way to the sides...mold it better the rear of the trunk...and I think that it should taper off all the way to the front of the trunk.
| Schleppy | 11-02-2003 10:55 AM |
You did a great job fabbing that, but the end result looks kind of, um, out of place. If that were shorter and blended in it would probably look a lot better...
| gerbs | 11-02-2003 12:16 PM |
looks clean but needs to be extended to the sides and smoothed out and THEN it'd look pimp :)
| MAD REX | 11-02-2003 01:41 PM |
You're onto something, that's a good start but needs to be improved upon. Go you!
| Mark B. | 11-02-2003 01:46 PM |
You have given me some good suggestions on how to improve the end treatment.
I now will have to figure out how to not only build a 3 dimensional compound curve but also how to slope up and forward on the ends.
It may not be possible to do this with a one-piece spoiler but maybe.
Also I might have to purchase a wrecked WRX trunk for a tool, or otherwise I might have my car in the garage for months acting as a model!

I spy an APS exhaust.. the man has some taste :)
| Samirr76 | 11-02-2003 02:43 PM |
It nees to be blended in more in the front and back. Something also needs to be done with the sides they end too abruptly. I think the angle of the spoiler is too sharp. Looks like its going to create nothing but drag, instead of downforce. Angle it back more.
Just some suggestions. :)

The angle on the spoiler was an intuitive guess based on spoilers from days of old and, I hate to even say it, I also looked at the NASCAR rules.
It works out to about 55 Degrees, the more vertical the more down force, but the more drag. The trick is to find a happy medium.
I tried to design for a speed of 60 to 70 mph where the spoiler would effectively "Destroy" the lift on the rear of the car. The goal was for neutral lift, by doing this a car with a spoiler can actually have less overall induced drag than a car without one.
The spoiler accomplishes this by reactive force, deflection of the air up but also by damming the air in front of it, this creates a high pressure area on the trunk, resulting in a downward push.
The Infinity G35 coupe can achieve neutral lift with that little spoiler it has and so does the Audi TT.
Now all I have to do is get my spoiler to look as good as a G35 or Audi TT:p
