Spray tint OEM WRX side-markers part 1

Spray tint OEM WRX side-markers
Anyone have pics of OEM WRX side-markers (the orange ones) sprayed with a Nite-shades tint or similar? How's the ease of application? I like the idea of the CF ones but I want to keep the light (I have it wired as parking/turn signal lights). Just don't like the clear corners with the blue, especially now that I've done the headlight mod, so they're darker, too.

I don't have any pics for you, but I did it to mine and it was a piece of cake. Check out this link, it may be helpful:

Well, that decides it - I'm doing it to the clear corners. Anybody have comments on doing it to the taillights? Also, where can you get this? Didn't see it carried at Pep Boys......
Capt Crunch 11-18-2002 04:40 PM

Can you post instructions on how to do this? Also can i use my stock orange ones or should I get the clear ones?
trhoppe 11-18-2002 04:50 PM

1) remove orange lenses
2) spray them with black spray paint, let dry
3) install back on car

I didnt use tint, I just used the black spray paint I used for the headlights, so they match. You can still see them at night. I only used 1 coat.

what kind of paint and where can I get it? Sorry, but I'm a n00b, took me couple hours to get the damn grill off and replace my lights.

/\ /\ for taillight applications of spray tint??
65imp 11-19-2002 12:59 AM

I just did my taillights...
I used nightshades on my sidemarkers, and liked the look so much I figured I'd do it to the taillights too. It looks pretty damn good, now the whole car is blacked out pretty well. A couple of tips:
1. Spray the first couple strokes very lightly, this stuff likes to dribble if you overdo it early. Wait like a minute, then give it a good even overall coat.
2. If you don't listen to #1 or if you don't like the result, or if the long arm of the law wants to jerk you off- use acetone to remove it. even after totally dry.

Other than that the directions on the can tell the rest. I bought only one can, and have easily had enough to do the tails and the sides, and prolly enough to do another car...

I'm curious about this question, too. Also, do your taillights illuminate near the original red, or is it like some really dark maroon. I would think the closer to the original red when lit, the less problem you'll have with da' fuzz...
sonicblue 11-19-2002 11:32 AM

/\

Who knows about the look of Nite-Shades on the red and/or white section of your taillights? Do the lights still show close to the original color? Can you do your reverse lights?
slack2012 11-19-2002 11:35 AM

I did the sidemarkers with, testors spray tint, they came out pretty well, still semi functional, defineately not nearly as bright. I found that you needed quite a few coats to totally get rid of any amber in the sidemarkers, and the stuff runs like a mother ****er.

sonicblue 11-19-2002 11:46 AM

That's pretty dark - I wouldn't mind if it looked like smoked-out amber. I want to make sure the side markers are USEFUL, not just functional. There's a difference (to me, at least) between having the light be visible and having the light actually draw other drivers' vision to it.

Still waiting for pics/opinions on taillight applications....

Some pics of my car. I didn't do them but I do recomend a clear coat after painting it helps with shine.

OMG those tailights are SIC, SIC, SICK i tell you!

How do you think they'd look on a white car? Can anyone photochop that?
Kwyjibo 10-10-2003 04:04 AM

I had them done with black paint at first. Then they faded after about 8 months. I decided to get some mbp spray paint from paintscratch.com and used that, then clear coated it....matches a bit better.

I'm geting my bumper replaced after a rear-end and the bodyshop is painting my front lip and side spats for free, i may ask them to do my side markers nicely too.....

here is a pic, but its kinda far away...

VERY NICE LOOK!! Seriously thinking about this mod- My rex is the same year and color. Any extra interest by your local PD? Cops here in Portland are usually a little too busy to pull people over for little stuff, but my heavily modded Neon used to get me plenty of "police escorts".
sonicblue 10-10-2003 10:06 AM

Guess I should post here, huh?!?

When the light hits the lenses, you can still see some original color but I don't mind. You have a lot of flexibility with # of coats/degree of tint.
pleue 10-10-2003 06:52 PM

Those black rex tails look real good but you could get in a heap of trouble for painting over the reflectors on your tails. If someone runs into your car at night they could easily argue its cuz you didnt have reflectors and fault could be reversed. But, looks real bomb nonetheless.
sonicblue 10-11-2003 11:19 AM

I should go do some testing, but I'm pretty sure when light shines on them, they still reflect. Theoretically, if light can pass through the VHT from behind (the bulbs), then light can still pass through from another car's lights, hit the reflectors, then pass back out.

Head over to i-club.... (I know, I know) and check out the for sale by vendors section. Find the Lamin-X dealer posts and check it out.

Lamin-X sells smoking kits for all model imprezas for tails, side markers, headlights, turns, that kind of stuff. People seem to be pretty happy with the product and you can take it off pretty easily if the fuzz gets all fuzzy.
