STi has a different windsheild than the other WRX's? part 1

STi has a different windsheild than the other WRX's?
THe other night at the races in south philly someone kicked up a rock on my windshield... and cracked it... (it was a creeper that showed it's ugly head the next day)

Glanzman (a subaru dealer) quoted me close to $900 to fix it! A local shop quoted me #310 and they'll come to me! Someone mentioned that the dealer's price was probably more because they believe the STi has a lighter windshield and it was more expensive... and that the local shop just knows about the regular WRX glass!

Does the STi have a different windshield? If so, I think i'd rather have my car a couple pounds heavier and have the thicker glass! I mean, one rock caused damage after only having the car for 2 months!

Can anyone confirm that the glass is different?

Anyone else having this issue with their windshield easily cracked?

Thanks for your thoughts...

I thought I read somewhere that the rear glass is the one that is different. Many members on here have had issues with the Subaru windshield being cracked easily (by rocks or on their own!!!). Check with your insurance company on getting the windshield replaced. Some of us have had our windshields crack on their own and had insurance replace it for free. I recently had to get my replaced; it was free with State Farm down here in FL. Had the windshield replaced at my workplace in about 30 minutes. It took them a day or so to get the windshield moulding in.

Lost my windshield after two months in my WRX. Similar type thing - rock and then large crack the next day...
criz 06-01-2004 10:59 AM

man o man... can't they make them a little stronger! and maybe possibly include a little tint at the top!?
nukem2.5rs 06-01-2004 02:03 PM

i thought the antenna was in the wind sheild or something?

Antenna is in the rear window.

the windshield in my WRX cracked after I had it about 6 months. One rock is all it took, still havent had it fixed. If the dealer is quoting that high they are either quoting with the stock glass (very expensive) or they use another company and have their own little upcharge in there so they can make a buck.
STIenvy 06-01-2004 03:14 PM

Also find out what kind of glass the cheaper company uses. You don't want to pay $300 just so you can replace the windshield again in 3 months.

In some states its a law that insurance companies have to pay the cost of a broken windshield if it's claimed. They have to pay it in full. Try to claim it.

Prudential quoted me my $500 deductable...

i'm going with the local shop @ $310 plus tax

this is all because some dick head drove on the wrong side of the rode in his 86 Camaro thinking he was cool

why wouldnt a windshield be under warranty of your new car? that sucks that it isnt. i have the original windshield on my 99rs with 130xxx miles...guess they dont make em like they used to
ydant 06-01-2004 04:28 PM

it's all about a lucky rock, really...

I haven't had an issue with any windshield - I just happened to get a fluke break :(

Luckily SC is a no fault, no deduct on windshield repairs/replacements

Since when does a warranty cover damage from a flying rock?
Nasiocks 06-01-2004 04:33 PM

Most insurance companies charge less than $10/year for Glass coverage. Which there is NO deductible and it does not count against you as a claim. At least in NY that;s how it is. I've had 3 windows/windshields replaced and never paid a penny. And they came to my work and did it in the parking lot in the winter. (<30 temp)

You guys must drive on some pristine roads. I average a windshield every 8 months! Thats after waiting for more than one crack cause I don't want to waste my time with glass appointments.

I pay extra for glass coverage, and i pay $50 each time. The downside is, I've got a rust spot where they pried my windsheild out with a metal tool:mad:

thanks for this thread!!! it reminded me to get my windsheilds crack fixed.

My windshield took a HUGE rock hit that made me and my passenger duck...it took a little divot out of the glass...that was ~33k miles ago.
No crack(s)...:alien:

I remember a salesman telling me the glass on the STi is lightweight, a special kind of glass to save weight..maybe this is the reason for the higher replacement cost
criz 06-02-2004 12:20 AM

man, this sucks that our windshields are breaking as much as they are... maybe we can get something from subaru to 1) pay for our recurring damages or 2) prevent this from happening to future subaru owners.

I mean, I paid 30 grand for a great car... and didn't even consider the EVO because I believed the STi was superior in quality... and my windshield's first rock encounter led to it's fate...

shame on subaru!

(i'm just kidding subaru!)

teh?
greg donovan 06-02-2004 12:57 AM

but is the sti glass lighter?
RJG 02-09-2006 11:05 AM

Only rear windshield.
Damon 02-09-2006 11:12 AM

my salesman told me the rear glass in the STi was lighter. i was like "oh ya?" and dismissed it as i thought he was just being a dumbass salesman and making stuff up. obviously he knew what he was talking about.
explosivexover 02-09-2006 11:25 AM

Main, if you have Geico insurance, they replace windshields without a deductible and without your premium going up. I replaced a windshield on my old car through Geico and my rates never went up.
Foxy 02-09-2006 11:38 AM

To answer the original poster (though this is an ancient thread), I don't know if the STi windshield is different, but a WRX windshield works perfectly. I had the same experience, detailed here. It's been a few months and it's snowed and rained and I've gone through a few carwashes, and no problems.
poormansporsche 02-09-2006 12:18 PM

No I don't think they do. My 2001 RS windshield has taken quite a beating and still going strong. I'm surprised as it's been attacked by some pretty vicious rocks too. My gf who has a Jetta is always blown away. VW's have crap glass. She's on her 5 window and has 3 huge chips.

cheers

damn. tell her to stop tailgating people. :)

I just had mine replaced in my WRX, I was thinking about asking for an STI windshield just to get the little bubble-pattern bit on it. When they quoted me 185 for new PPG glass, all of a sudden i didn't really care which one I got anymore.

The idea of a 900 dollar windshield makes me cringe.
TravisSTi 02-09-2006 04:39 PM

I have a 04 STI and I replaced my windshield with a 2003 wrx windshield, which was the stock windshield (atleast look wise, as it doesnt have the 3rd visor) it was much cheaper then the quote on a 2004 windshield.
