STi Splitters on WRX
Has anyone gotten this done to their car? If so can you post some pictures of it? Also, in doing this will it cause any permanent damage to yoru car, cause i heard something about cutting your bumper? Or can I just take these off when i don't want them any more? Thanks
o2sys 06-10-2005 11:36 AM

i got them! yea u'll have three (one each side) so total of 6 slits on ur bumper, but i don't think it will be that noticeable, and the rest uses plastic clips and the whole were already made there on the bottom from factory.

Dude, for God's sake, do a search first, there is a thread about this EXACT same thing 1 page back... Here is my reply to that thread...

No No! No cutting into the bumper cover involved!

No need to search for an instructional thread, here's all you do...

1. Clean the bumper thoroughly.
2. Cut ALL the tabs off of the backside and top of the splitters.
3. Put some 2-sided tape along the inside top and side edges of the splitters.
4. Put 'em on the car with the hardware kit that comes with them.

The push-in black clips are a PITA, wish they were all screw-type, but no big deal. Anyway, -hour job, tops. Any questions? PM me.

For god's sake don't use 3M.

This has been covered so many times. It is a simple install. If you had it done at the dealership, or any reputable body shop, they'd cut the slits.

Do you work professionally, and it will last forever. Plus, you have the pride of doing the job right.
mcowger 06-10-2005 01:57 PM

Ermmm, yeah.

Doing it with trim tape holds just as well, and doesn't cause permanent damage. Why permanently damage the car if youdon't have to? Its not like theses things are a $30 wing, they are 2lb pieces of plastic with absolutely NO foce on them to pull them off.

3M trim tape is more than enough.

I sooooo wish the rank of "Specialist" wasn't given for post count.

1. 3M tape is removeable, cuts in your bumper cover are NOT, therefore the 3M way is the superior way, because it will, in fact, work just fine. In absolute fact, it isn't even really needed, the splitter fits very tight without it.
2. "Right" is a subjective term, not an objective one, which means it depends on perspective. "Right" for me would be the way that works, and causes no damage, so I can re-sell the part in the future.

Not very investment minded are you.

but why cut the tabs off the splitters if you dont have to? :p

I kept the tabs on the splitters...so that i could sell them afterwords when i sell the car...(holes in the bumper just bondo fill..theyre tiny slots...and repaint front bumper)

i liked the way each tab on the splitter clicked in..more peace of mind

OKAY!

Listen to these guys instead, because my Specialist title is irrelevant.
I don't do this stuff all the time.

Use the 3M tape. You also might be interested in one of these too, I have one for sale cheap.

Hmmm, whats more expensive? Bondofill + paint on bumper or $130 set of splitters (which you can easily resell with or without the tabs for the exact same price).
MattDell 06-10-2005 02:48 PM

IMO, it looks like ass unless you get foglight covers as well. :o

Time to set your ego aside for 5 seconds and come to the realization that 3M engineered the tape for this type of application and there is nothing wrong with using it.
andrew12 06-10-2005 03:12 PM

must disagree with that one ^^^^

use 3m tape, it will turn out perfectly.

I am actually awaiting a set of these(hopefully monday), and was planning on the 3M route. There is something else holding these on though besides the tape right? I got the mounting hardware, which I would imagine are some clips or bolts that hold the bottom on?

As long as the 3M tape is just to secure the top pieces, its fine to just use tape. If the spliters are only held on by the tape, I would be much more skeptical. I had a good friend lose one of his JUN replica headlight eyelids because it was only held on with a couple pieces of 3M tape...
CGM_WRX 06-10-2005 03:21 PM

My splitters installed with 3M tape. They fit perfectly. There was a warning on the back of the tape that said to beware of dip****s who think you're a ricer for using their product which was incedently invented long before the ricer era.

Back and sides are held in place by clips/bolts. Only the top and leading edge should be held by the tape.
UltimateLurker 06-10-2005 04:09 PM

Yeah, you only need put tape on the front/top corner, and the only negative to it is that it's a bizzle to get off.

To each their own I guess.

CGM_WRX,

Nice ride. Only thing it's missing is a nice set of shoes

*edit* oh and clear those lights!

people on nasioc are so :furious: ....

Ok, well my splitters came today and the install seems pretty straight forward. One question I had before cutting the top mounting tabs off of the splitters. I am interested in purchasing a V-limited carbon fiber replica lip, which attaches to said splitters. Will using the 3M tape not make this possible?

I am not definete on the V-limited lip, but I a pretty set on it. I dont know how much it weighs, but I would imagine that a 10" long peice of double sided tape and 7 bolts/clips on each side would keep it plenty secure. Especially if I used a little more tape on the middle of the lip to keep it from sagging. Any experience or thoughts??

Good question. I presume that the lip utilizes a lot of the same mounting points under the bumper cover as the splitters to provide plenty of stability with or without the tabs.

Are you kidding?? I've been lusting over those wheels for about 3 years now and still haven't been able to get ahold of a set! :(

I seriously lucked out on mine. A guy on here got them from overseas and ended up wishing he would have got the Silver ones instead of the Champagne color. Lucky me. :D

Thanks again subysouth for the hookup on the wheels. :)
MattDell 06-14-2005 12:39 AM

Mind if I ask how much you paid for the wheels?
