Prodrive Shift Knob part 1

MattDell 11-28-2002 03:50 PM

Prodrive Shift Knob
Anyone have some personal experience with these? They look really nice, but how is the feel when shifting? I really like the shape of my Kartboy knuckleball, but it just doesn't look very good in my car.

Do mean the round one? If so, that's the one I use, and love it. I have the back version and it's great. My only complaint (as with all metal shiftknobs) is that it can get really cold or really hot depending on the weather. Before this knob, I used the STi titanium piece, and hated that one.

Scott:)

I've got the silver Prodrive knob and I love it. It's nice and heavy. I've had no problems with it getting too hot. It can get quite cold, but not enough to bother me.

It's a nice shift knob!

Anyone got pics? :)

These things are built like tanks, and look good too! I really really recommend them. While shifting, they definitely feel more solid than stock.

So then I take it no one would wanna trade their black one for a silver Kartboy + cash?

You guys are really making me jeleous. Maybe I'll get my brother to buy me one for Christmas. :D
Ikonosin 11-28-2002 11:13 PM

IIRC the black ones were a "limited" run, so finding a black one may be hard. I believe there are venders selling the silver or blue ones.:)
MattDell 11-29-2002 12:39 AM

I found several vendors still selling the black one. I'll give 'em a call tomorrow just to make sure, though.
Rzk 11-29-2002 03:47 AM

I used one for about 3 months during summer. I have the black one. The knob has some heft so it feels pretty good, but it gets ultra hot in summer. I nearly roasted my hand the first time it got hot. BTW, my black one is for sale!

I like the MOMO Race Airleather (All Leather). It matches the MOMO steering wheel;)

Also, since it's leather there wont be any hot/cold issues. I'm trying to find a good deal on the MOMO...

I love mine. I have the silver with blue top.

I don't know how, but mine is scratched up all over?

Does yours looked scratched up?
scottwrx 11-29-2002 07:56 AM

I have the "blue" one and love it. The hot and cold extremes are not a problem for me. And besides, it looks great in the car! Isn't that what matters anyway?

The Momo ones look nice. The only problem I have with them is that you have to use set screws. Some folks here are making threaded inserts for Subarus, but you still have to use the set screws to hold the insert in place.

The Prodrive and Kartboy shift knobs are threaded for Subarus.
sladams1 11-29-2002 09:37 AM

Props for MOMO Instert
The inserts work great for the MOMO ARLs! Awesome, no problem with the set screws.

And now, back to the thread. I find it interesting that the top part of the Prodrive looks just like the MOMO. Both have the logo in the middle with what appears to be a brushed aluminum center with 6 "dimples". Hmmm.

I can't stand my Prodrive shift knob, the thing is huge, it pretty much turns a short throw shifter into a stock throw. I couldn't stand it, took it out, and now have the kartboy.

Do you wear a ring? I don't, and so mine is not scratched up. That's just my theory.
Zahnster 11-29-2002 11:16 AM

Mine has a couple small scratches, but mostly on areas I'm not sure how they got scratched. I don't wear a ring FWIW.
Skyline 11-29-2002 11:18 AM

Btw, I have the Prodrive shift knob with the STi short throw shifter and Kartboy bushings. The throws are a lot shorter without resorting to a short height shifter.
WRXedUSA 11-29-2002 05:50 PM

I just got the Prodrive from Vivid.

I like it actually. It gets real cold though, but it warms as you drive due tot he driveline. It make the shift a little better, you can feel if you in or out of gear better. It is tall so it almost acts like a short shift. It still cant compensate for the aggravating notchiness that needs to go into first and reverse. I think it is the baddest lookign shifter other than the STi WRC SWRT shifter.

What was wrong with the Sti titanium? Got a used one for sale?

I just didn't like the feel of it...too small I think and it might be for sale, PM me an offer;)
andywrx 12-01-2002 11:24 AM

Just FYI...
I have one of the black ones, and I like it.
However, the stupid "P" sticker kept coming off when it would
get hot in my car. I lost it for over a month, figured it was gone...
...Until I found it the other day while cleaning my car. A miracle,
I tell you (That sticker makes the knob...)

I would suggest glueing that sticker on with some sort of
high temp. glue, especially if you live out west or down south.
When it gets hot enough, that sticker will come off, no doubt
about it, and it's a tough thing to find another one...
gjhsu 12-01-2002 12:44 PM

My sticker is forever stuck crooked. While placing it, the knob wasn't screwed down all the way, so when I placed it, it was fine, but then I screwed it in some more, and now it's crooked.

Oh well, can't win 'em all.
WRXedUSA 12-01-2002 10:30 PM

Assembly is by far the most ghetto thing I have ever done.

gjhsu- Try shimming the inside of your know with washers so it screws down till the label is straight, or peel it out and re-glue it.

I can't belive I paid 69 clams for a 1/4" "Prodrive" sticker. I like it though.
MattDell 12-01-2002 10:50 PM

My Kartboy is the same way, I put it on straight, but over time my knob as turned further and now it's about 30 off.
