Stock Autox Car choices part 1

Rich10 11-07-2005 09:39 AM

Stock Autox Car choices
Someone I work with asked me what would make the best, relatively stock, autox car. He wants to keep the car in a fairly unmodified class and mentioned the following cars: 911, Boxter, M3, Corvette (C5+), S2000, and Miata/MX-5. Cost isn't that much of an issue for him. What would be the best choice for him (feel free to suggest something else)?

If he's just starting out... anything on that list is good as it's all about seat time and not what is the best car.

But using that list...
The S2000, C5 Vette (both A-Stock) and the Miata (C-Stock) are tops in their class. But they all need shocks to be tops... same thing with almost any 'stock' car.. you need better shocks to be tops in the class on a national level... but locally, any car you show up with can be best... because it's the driver that makes it that way. ;)

A good recipe is: Add... shocks, lightweight wheels, lighter exhaust and Kumho V710s and you're good to go in Stock. The 911 (depending on flavor of 911), M3 and Boxter, while all fun cars are not 'tops' nationally an get beat by 'lesser' cars.

Add the RX8 onto that list too. It's damn good right out of the box in B-Stock.

RX-8
Nissan 350Z
Mini Cooper S
Corvette C5+
These are primarily if the wants to make sure he has a competive car, and are all competitive in their stock categories.

<SUBARU PLUG>
STS WRX(but has to be modified to limit of the class)
</SUBARU PLUG>

as said above he will have to put some money into shocks, light weight wheels, and some stickies.

The 350Z isn't competitive in BS... on a local level maybe, but on a national level? Nope. Not in a heartbeat. Our lower HP, MUCH lower torque 8's won the top 10 trophy positions at nationals along with the renegade Bauer Porsche 968. Not to say the 350Z isn't a fun car... because it is... but the RX8 has a 200-300 lb advantage over a porky 350Z.

I think the new WRX would also be good in DS for '06.

By the way... your Subaru plug should be STX WRX. ;)

Lotus Elise
omahasubaru 11-07-2005 11:05 AM

Z06 for SS
S2000 for AS
RX-8 for BS
Miata for CS
Cooper S for GS
Cooper for HS
Camaro for FS

Just look at the nationals results and pick car that trophies... Too bad the 968 & E36 M3 aren't competitive in BS anymore as the E36 M3 would be my first choice stock class/daily driver car.

If I had money for a purely hobby car, I'd be taking a serious look at http://www.arielatom.com/ariel/site.php. It will probably get classed somewhere where it can't be nationally competitive, but I bet it is one of the few cars you can buy off-the-shelf, drive to an event (assuming it's not raining!), and make an Elise look slow.
vintagemilano 11-07-2005 02:20 PM

Nissan sentra se-r spec V just got moved to GS. This is a fun to drive car the lsd works really well and has a good chance at being competitive in GS.

What he said!
MattNJ2.8 11-07-2005 09:22 PM

Mini Cooper -HS
S2k, EVO -AS
Miata - -CS
Z06 / Elise -SS
330i -DS
RX-8 - BS
MR2 (pick year carefully)

Doesn't sound like budget is much of an issue. I'd buy an Elise and trailer the thing in.
AndrewSS 11-07-2005 10:27 PM

what about a porsche 911 (993) for ASTOCK, it took 1st this year... ;)

A GT3 in SS could be fun :D I see that you are in LI. There are a few drivers working on GT3s in the area that could help out with set-up as well with that car.

??? Really? I had no idea. The lotuscars.com site offers nothing to support your claims, but that wouldn't be the first time that web info was wrong/outdated...

If they really are available:

If I could only afford an Exige!

Oh wait, that's right as it was withdrawn. I wonder how the 06 WRX will do in DS.

Aint't that the truth! The Lotus web site is useless. I haven't really followed the Exige progress in much detail. But it has certainly been announced, and orders have been placed. I don't think any customer cars have been delivered yet. It's not really going to be a performance upgrade over an Elise. Basically the same car as an Elise with LSS, except with a different body (not as good looking, IMHO).

Do you get the Exige aero package with the Elise LSS? Lotus worked pretty hard on this, so I'd hazard that the Exige, as a total package, brings appreciably more to the table than the Elise.

And looks are subjective, of course. ;) I personally prefer the coupe to the removable hardtop, both structurally and aesthetically...

TheWRX 11-08-2005 01:01 AM

[sidetrack]Yes, that's true, the Exige produces more downforce at high speeds. But I believe it's also going to have more drag, and be a bit heavier.[/sidetrack]
Rich10 11-08-2005 12:43 PM

He's going with a 911. He said that even if it isn't the most competitive car, its the one he liked most.
