Subaru Performance Publication?

I was asked today to present this to you guys for your comments:
If Subaru were to publish a short magazine 2-3 times a year, similar to Subaru's "Drive Magazine" but targeted to the interests of performance owners, would you want to receive it?
What kinds of articles and content should a publication of this type feature to make it most meaningful for those people who are involved with Subaru performance?
Please post your comments. We will use the input as one of our sources of information to determine if we move forward with this project.

I would love to see a targeted publication such as this. It would be great to get tips and information targeted towards the Subaru brand. I would also love to see interviews and articles from the seasoned "amatuers" that compete in Subaru products in the various types of motorsport around the U.S. Everything from upcoming products and car releases to Owners Bio's to driving tips could be covered.
I think it is a great idea.

Tech tips are good, but can always seem to be biased to products unless a test mule is avaliable for a variety of parts. Driving tips are always nice to see from someone who can drive a Suby like they stole it. Maybe National autocross results with rankings among Suby drivers? just a food for thought.

I don't like parts reviews in sponsored publications because there is zero impartiality. I'd love to see coverage of amateurs doing stuff with all sorts of Subarus, not just the current model. That would probably never make it past marketing but we can wish!

I think this is a great idea. Not only to be mailed to current competitors and modifiers but also at the showrooms to show people that Subaru is a company that cares for the customer and wants to help them make the most of their car.
What would be the name of the new mag "Driver Faster" ? j/k
I love this idea!

I like the idea of performance driving tips, since most of our subies are prone to attracting foreign objects :alien:

WRC and personal owner's bios would be the 2 most interesting to me.
I agree about the bias in subaru rating performance parts, so no interest in that.
But I think this is a great idea, I hope they do it.

I'm sure they would only feature parts that they carry, but I think it would be interesting to have articles showing how they are installed for those of us that like to do things ourselves! :D

I'd love to write for this publication, Randy, you know I'm an already published author well versed in Subaru .
In fact, i had an idea to create an all-subaru magazine recently.

If it's THAT little publishings by year, make it Auto Cross, Road Race, Performance Driving Tips & Tech Tips.
Include Rally as honorary mention but remember that the above is the fastest growing bunch in our comunity as many of us do it or can do it while rally dictates a built car.
Just my .02

It needs to be at least quarterly and at least twice the content of Drive and as long as we're wishing how about doubling the content of Drive as well.

i think there's a market for all of the above...

I would love to see it.
I know of a member who flirted with the idea of putting out a Subaru performance magazine along the lines of Honda Tuner a couple of years ago, but couldn't get the backing to do it. I thought it was a good idea then, and I still think it is.

I'd rather not see driving tips. Two reasons:
-First time some kid wrecks and mentions that he was trying out one of the driving tips in the official Subaru magazine, the magazine is going to get canned.
-I feel that most driving instruction needs to be so personalized to a particular person's experience level and a particular type of racing, that 99% of it would be useless. That same space could be filled with something that was only usefull or interesting half the time, and that would be fifty times better.
As far as parts reviews, sure, it will cover subaru parts. But it is interesting knowing what's available... especially if they actually talked about stuff like STi parts that they can order. Or if they picked a particular car (like a SVX, or a GC8) and listed all the official, but "exotic", Subaru parts you could order from the dealers.

I would actually like the driving tips. Mostly from a basics point of view. So many people are driving these cars without a fundamental understanding of the correct way to handle the car. It doesn't have to be about getting the most off of the line in drag racing or when powersliding through a corner is best. Of course for it to last more than a few articles it would have to cover a wide range of vehicle types and situations.
I was one of the other voters. I would like to see a reoccuring communication with those in the know at Subaru. Most like getting details on upcoming models, what the latest tech bulletins are saying or proper courses of action for complaints/compliments for local dealers and regional staff.

I think it would be nice to see articles about how to race safely . Even in the thriving metropolis that is Asheville, NC, we have all sorts of idiots who think that just because they have a purty car they can go outrun anything (including State Troopers), and then try to prove it by street racing. So I guess I might vote for anything race-related that is approachable by the general public (not that I have any concrete examples of what that is).
However, I also think driving and handling tips would be good. Something along the lines of the few "How to Autocross" and "How to Make Your Car Handle" books my father gave me from when he used to build cars for NASCAR teams. I agree with Kevin about biased parts reviews, but I think general information about what the parts do would be useful. i.e.: "Coilovers differ from a standard MacPherson setup in the following ways. . ." or "The difference between inverted and standard struts is. . ." This would be part of a parts review, but would also educate the reader about what she or he is buying rather than having the guy behind the parts counter saying, "Yeah, it looks sweet and helps the car handle." In my somewhat limited experience, people who know what they're buying and know what they need from it will spend more on a part they know is worth the extra cash. My vote then goes to parts reviews... Hmmm... How to vote...
Given all this, my vote goes to "Other" because I can't vote for more than one choice.;)
That, I think, is my longest post, ever

i wanted to add from my newbie prospective on Subaru Motorsports.
From what I have experienced in the community, I would honestly just like to see any event, individuals, or group events where Subaru is making its presence known.
What do I mean? Well, if it wasnt for this board, I doubt I would have ever known about WRX and STi classifications for 'road racing'. Furthermore, seeing Gary Sheehan (sp?) post his videos about his track experiences let me really know wher Subarus stand when it comes to on track competitiveness.
However, I know what would be most useful for me would be some 'this is how you do it right' articles. From the necessary steps you need to take to make YOU and your car ready for certain types of racing would be wonderful, and a help to those intimidated or scared about starting any form of competitive events. That could just range from 'How to get started in autoX' to 'what the driver needs to prepare for if he wants to track his car'. Where I think these articles would be unique and especially helpful is that you are market specific. People who drive this one (or few model types) type of car will see EXACTLY what is involved, and whether they want to take that level of commitment or not.
For me and my wife though, I would just like to know more of what is out there. She has gone to the point where every event I think about going to , she asks "Is it a Subaru event?" just because those have ALWAYS been the best in terms of people and friendly environment.
Also, for a company that is sponsoring SO much on Speed channel (from drag shows to rally to track events), I would just like to see MORE of where the Subies ARE doing their thing. I know when I see a track event on TV sponsored by Subaru, I just wait to see Subies on the grid. I am always disappointed when it is Australian Holdens or GTCC (which I like too).
I just wanna hear more about Subies and their owners doing their things. That would help some people I know (and myself) to get more involved in the community. More self-awareness of what is going on would be nice too :)

I voted for all of them except IDRC and owner's bios, but I would probably still check out what they have if they indeed published IDRC and maybe the bios too. I didn't quite grasp what I would get out of reading owner's bios.
So where do I sign up? :D

Add references to Performance driving schools.
For articles related to performance driving make sure to include a disclaimer 'don't try this at home' -- or, point out that these drivers didn't just start out doing it on the street, but rather that it has been a progression of learning in a controlled environment perhaps with some other experienced drivers. (To avoid the comment above about how someone might try out a driving tip & then have an accident.)

I think it would be cool but does Subaru really want another example of touting the performance of the vehicles and then denying warranty claims based on abuse? It seems like there are already enough people complaining just because subaru features aggressive driving in some of its ads.

Exactly.
I have been personally present for two 5MT failures at an SCCA Autocross. Both were denied warranty claims due to "abusive driving."
How many cars of other makes have I seen drop a transmission at an Autocross? Zero.
They can't keep talking out of both sides of their mouths.

What I DONT like is the fact that autoX isn't really THAT hard on transmissions. You arent shifting, so there is MUCH less room for monkey footing it or over reving (depending on the course).
Dont get me wrong that there is a lot of torque available in lower gears (teeth breaker), but still, it shouldnt be THAT bad unless you are dropping the clutch at the start or something...
If you give SCCA memberships, I still dont see how you void warranty claims on that. So, if I break my tranny at the SE Region Subaru sponsored event, does my warrant get denied on the tranny?

I would hope that Subarus will become bigger players in Road Racing. I think SPEED World Challenge can gain a bigger following if it continues to be marketed. Great tight racing in cars you drive on the street. Wish Subaru was involved.
