stupid front license plate "bracket" and bar across cars mouth..

is anyone else extremely annoyed at that ugly box where you are suppost to mount the front license plate and that bar that goes across the mouth of the car? has anyone out there taken it to a body shop and let them chop that all out? i was just wonderin. i just got my RS and that is the only thing i dont like about it {aside from my glove box not shutting all the way, but subaru gets to fix that [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img]}
Bankheist 12-02-2000 07:45 PM

Be inventive and put "SUBARU" there, or "IMPREZA" or "COBB Tuning" [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img]
Damon 12-02-2000 07:47 PM

now thats not a bad idea!

I would go for this or "IMPREZA" I already have "COBB Tuning" on my car
Damon 12-02-2000 07:54 PM

that looks slick! is that possible the letters off the back moved to the front? or a sticker? i think the sticker would be better. but that looks great!

ps-hopefully in about a year i can put cobb tuning on my car too [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img]
Bankheist 12-02-2000 09:20 PM

Personally, moving your badge letters to the front would look tacky, i think. just go for the stickers.... I'm gonna put some caulk into the screw holes.... so when and officer ever askes me why the plate isnt up there, I'll be like "there's no holes" [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img]

Here in VA the Nazi like troopers get all excited about such things. I just screwed a broken plate frame to my plate and dropped it, ground it and bashed it until it looked like it fell off. If I get pulled over for it that's my story and I am sticking to it. Oh, and it just happened that morning.
Bankheist 12-02-2000 09:39 PM

I was thinking about making the license plate to where you cant screw it in any more (break off the top part of it or something) I dunno, just keep it under your passanger mat, and if his lights come on from behind, and you get pulled over.... get it up to the dash ASAP!

I cut out all the plastic from inside the front bumper. The plastic that Subaru used cuts very cleanly. I then cut the license plate bracket off using a hack saw. I took my time and made sure that anything that could be scratched if the saw slipped was well protected. The opening is much more visible, similar to the 22B style. I did all this to fit a custom made front grill. Things worked out very well. I will try to have photos soon. I have my front plate slid between the center console and passenger seat. I have not dealt with the police, yet, about not running a front plate. The sticker idea above is a good, cheap idea!

I've got nothing there as well. Looks very nice, especially with a grille behind it. I believe I have a pic of it on my memberpics, if not email me and I'll send you a picture of it.

i understand the bracket looks silly. in hawaii assdick cops look for ricie looking cars like ours. so i bent the bottom of the plate back so it looks like its been chopped. looks ok but doesn't look right with the top half still there. i am bout to go look into the law about cutting off the top and drilling new holes to mount. then you will only have the letters and numbers. looks a little bit more euro. plus it opens the front look up a bit.

i still see no point in front liscence plates any way...i figure if a cop's going to chase you they'll be coming from behind you...damn jersey laws make you have both plates on...btw that sticker idea looks pretty hot

Hey Aaron
Can you describe what you did to cut out that piece, i've been wanting to do it for a while, but just didn't have the balls to go chopping up my car. And if you could send me a pic of it.
Thanks-
Ian

I just took mine off and it's sitting in my basement. I have been pulled over more times than I care to mention and have never had a problem. Also the fine is only 50 dollars and the cost for new plates is 15 so you could just say it must have been stolen or removed and then say you will get new plates. If he still tickets you then get the new plates and show up in court showing that you did.

state law requires front mounted license plates as well, but the cops here dont care at all. i, too, dont have the balls to go cutting on my bumper. i know i'd screw it all up. i think imma go w/ the stickers! that just looks sweet! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]

I cut the plastic box with a dremel tool, Then I used a haxsaw to cut the two tabs on the side of the metal bracket, the flat metal peace that runs across the front is only held on by 3 revits, so I just bent it back and forth with a pair of vicegrips

Please excuse my spelling it's 4:00 in the morning.

How come one of your vents is black and the other is silver? Are you still selling those roof scoops? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img] Your car looks mean.

Completely reshape the front bumper hole [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img]

IF you think the plastic piece looks bad, in NH we HAVE to have a front plate. there is a big ugly plate in the middle of my car's mouth. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/frown.gif[/img]
ndmorespd 12-05-2000 02:26 AM

Chuckles et all,

Here try this one on... It's LEGAL for those of us stuck in @nal states (California etc) that REQUIRE a front mounted plate:

BEND YOUR PLATE!

Quite Simple "Install" instructions:
1) Mount plate
2) Press plate (pressing as close to the TOP of the plate as possible) back as far as possible
3) Remove Plate (Making note of about where it needs to bend to meet the bottom of the "Box"
4) Find nearest Curb
5) Lay long end of bend OVER curb, leaving the short end out in the air
6) Using your feet, Hands or whatever (preferably NOT a hammer/Rock etc thus NOT scratching the paint on the plate) BEND to about 80 degrees
7) Remount plate (it will bring itself BACK to the degree of bend that is the sharpest possible)

Now this all serves two purposes.
A) You now have your LEGAL front mounted plate (They only said it had to be mounted, not pretty right???)
B) If you note right under the "Box" is a small crossbar right? Well look between them, this very UN-AERODYNAMIC flaw is now covered and smoothed by your new "Aero-Plate." (Yes I know it's not that large of a difference, but we ALL sell our ideas right?)

Anyway Good luck!!!

Most states that require you to have a front plate use lidar to catch you speeding.
They need the plate up front to reflect the laser back to them. Pretty sneaky.
I like the sticker idea, but I went ahead
and put my personal plates on. (NOLIMT)
Keeps them wondering [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img]
ndmorespd 12-05-2000 05:38 AM

Hey, I didn't know they even had speed limits in AK? (j/k of course)

I put a STi sticker there but when I got the fog covers, I switched it to the HKS sticker that came with the springs [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]

From where does one purchase these white lettered plates/stickers - a la AWDrivin?

I asked somebody when a lot of the new WRX pics were floating around. All I received back was a snotty response about how "out-dated" the plate looked.
Damon 12-06-2000 06:54 PM

hey ndmorespd..

just from the pics, it looks like your fogs are out of alignment. just though i'd let u know [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img]
