Swapping Trunks with Spoilers between a non STI and an STI...

Hi! I just got an email from another member who was asking if I would trade in my brand new 2004 Aspen White WRX trunk with stock spoiler for his brand new 2004 Aspen White STI trunk with stock STI spoiler.
I would swap it just to be different and I guess that what the other guy wants to also do. Be a diferent STI owner.
Any catches with this trade that you guys can think of? He said that his STI is new with plastic cover still on it. I just got my car this past Saturday so the paint and everything is still in very good shape.
What do you guys think? I'm just being skeptical and cautious.. =)

got to change the badges...
his springs might be heavier so make sure you swap springs too.

If you dont want to trade that guy I will! I have an aspen white trunk with no wing, in perfect condition. I would be willing to throw some cash in with the deal also. I am also in NJ too.

You have to change the lock/key assembly.
| eastcoastbumps | 09-15-2003 11:26 PM |
You also need to change the rear parcel shelf and 3rd brake light.
I've done the swap. I'm very happy with my huge ricey wing. :D

If you both have wings on your decks you don't have to trade shelves as you each have a light in the wing... If one car is naked and the other has a wing, then the to be wingless car needs the third light in the back window... I keep wondering if I should swap with a silver STi owner for my wingless trunk... Sometimes I love the wing, sometimes I think it's a bit much...

Ben,
i'm in the same line of thinking as you are - sometimes i like the wing, sometimes it looks to 'flashy' for my tastes....
but then here comes a guy who saw my car at the recent RallyCross in Hillsboro, OR. he just got his STI spanking new - and he wants to trade his winged trunk with my '03s wing and trunk.
at first i couldn't believe 'coz here's someone willing to do the trade up front, and a brand new car at that. but i said i'd call...and after two days of pondering...i decided for such a good deal and the guy is even willing to drive to my place and do the swap there, we did the deal. trade trunks + $100, pretty sweet deal to me...
i'll eventually get new shoes for my WRX soon so it'll look better with the wing next year. and yes, i'll debage the STI logo, since my car is definitely no STI...but in the same lineage though :D

Argh... how come I can't find anyone with a WRB STi that wants to trade?
But yeah, it's not supposed to be hard. Change trunklid, locks, springs, badges and you're done.

Got any pictures???
And which way did the hundy go? If you got it you got the sweetest deal on earth... if you paid it you still made out quite well...
Either way I would love to see some pictures...
Still thinking.... but I have the conrer splitter on and foglight covers "on the way". Not that I want people to mistake my car for an STi, but the plain 04 wrx looks way too goofy and the STi parts are cheap(ish) and easy to get...
Ben
edit: oh yeah, and I'm even going to debadge my foglight covers since it's just a rex and I'm going for as stealth as I can get so stickers at all aren't my look...

PM/email me if you want some details - I had everything ready to be swapped on my 2002 for an STi trunk, but it never happened. I can give you some good tips for removing the "springs," putting them back in, removing the lock, and putting THAT back in. Drop me a line if you're gonna do it.
| Fair Oaks STI | 09-16-2003 10:19 PM |
Swapped my STI winged trunk last weekend for a wingless one.
Very stealthy. Forget the parcel shelf - who wants a third eye, anyway? Do the trunk lid (easy 4 bolts), the springs (kinda fiddly) and the lock mechanism (weird sliding catch thingy).
Fortunately, the other guy knew how, so it got done in an hour.
I'm happy.

Just keep in mind that without a "3rd" brake light, your car might not be legal. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe any car that was manufacturered after a certain date is required to have a 3rd brake light of some sort. The 2002/2003 WRX with a "factory" wing have both a brake light in the wing AND on the shelf (for a total of 4!) But the STi, to my knowledge, only has the 3rd in the wing - lose the wing, and you *MAY* not pass inspection. Check your local laws, obviously.

ben,
just completed the install last night! and it looks good (personal opinion here) :D yes, definitely a good deal indeed, that's why i agreed to it.
and brack (the guy who traded with me) even gave me the chance to take his STI out for a spin! geez....it's really a totally different car, and you really feel the difference. for a while there i was considering trading my 03 wrx for a STI the next day
i got pics and will try to post them within the day - stay tuned.
i'll more likely get some sort of painted side skirts, to finish off the looks a little more.

just completed my swap last night! it's an easy install overall - the only 'hard' parts were the removal of that metal clip that slides over the lock mechanism, and the tension bar removal (had to swap tension bars)
putting back the tension bar was a breeze though, and same with the lock
but boy...that STI trunk sure weighs heavy
brack was even joking afterwards that he finally was able to shave 20 pounds off his STI after the swap

pj_cab...
Thanks for the pics... if you upgrade for your pbase account you can put your pics in your posts... I borrowed your pics and put them in my account to post them here, hope you don't mind. It's $23 for 100mb a year.

Also, Thanks you for the bfore and after prodrive spring pictures... How does the car ride with them? I am getting some in the spring with some new wheels (P1s or Tarmacs). They make the car look great, and I bet it takes out some of the body roll...
Thanks again... Your not making this any easier... Neither did seeing my third STi driving this morning on the way into work... At least he was going the other way so I couldn't be too tempted to follow him...
Looks Great!

ben,
no prob w/ the pic :D
and yes, i am planning on upgrading my pbase account today (not bad for $23/100mb).
as for the springs, total difference from stock! i chose the ProDrives after reviewing stuff here and from comments locally. they lower the car just right (since i still plan on hitting gravel roads and doing RallyCrosses soon). i was actually contemplating on the ProDrives and the Eibach Pro Kit...but then again my dealer gave me a good price, so I decided to go Prodrive (and I plan to make my car a 'ProDrive' car - my ProDrive exhaust I hope to get installed w/in the month)
ride-wise, they are much stiffer and no more body roll. i got to prove that since my route going to and from the office is a twisty and winding road, so i immediately felt that difference specially in the turns. and in the bumps, it's not that bad at all.
hey, we like the same wheels! i'm planning on saving up for either the P1s or the Tarmac IIs. have you seen the Tarmac IIs? they're pretty sweet! going for gunmetal gray, and for tires I'm planning on either the Kumho's or Yokohama AVS ES100 in 215/45 (or 40)/17. :-D

I think our cars are going to be very similar soon... I haven't decided on an exhaust yet though as I like the scooby sport sound too, but the prodrive is cheaper and looks so much better... That will be tough... I am almost possitive I am getting Rotas though as I cand see spending twice as much on the P1s when the Rotas are wider and lighter. I know they might not be as strong, but the P1s are heavier than stock which I really want to avoid, and I can afford to replace each wheel once and still be on target with the prodrives... I too am trying to decide between the anthracite and silver wheels, but I think I am going for silver as I want a sleepr look so nothing looks out of place unless you know WRXs to know there aren't the stock wheels.
Do you have a link or pic on the Tarmac IIs? I have not seen them yet...
You need sideskirts though... I can't beleive how much better thy made my car look. I actually get mad at myself for dealing with the ugly black one for so long now as I always hated them...

geez....we really have the same frame of thought
those are my same arguments - P1s; expensive, heavy, but they are ProDrives....Rotas; light, inexpensive.
i've also considered the SDRs - they look like ProDrives in a way too :D but now i'm really leaning onto the Tarmac IIs.

I've been checking out Suby Dude's website for the Rota's (I was even there yesterday) and I have missed the tarmac IIs everytime... They are now on the list instead of the tarmacs, and I have pretty much decided that as much as I would like to be an all prodrive car, I just can't afford it, so I will be getting either tarmac IIs or maybe SDRs like you have mentioned... Funny how we have almost the same exact part choices going on... I would have had all this on my 02 by now too if it hadn't gotten totalled...
It's going to be a tough choice between the SDRs and Tarmac IIs... who knows... The though that my next car will be an STi (in 5~10 years) makes the SDRs appealing since they fir over the breaks, but we'll see when I have the money what I end up with...
I'm sure I will get some more pics this weekend with my car and others as I am going to a local garage day with a bunch of people and then on to a RI meet with a confirmed STi and another silver 04 wrx and some 02/03 wrxs and at least one older RS so we will have most bodies represented...
Gotta love silver though... You should aslo post that pic on the silver thread...

btw, what did happen to your previous WRX? i saw the pic - i hope you guys didn't get hurt or anything while in it
i'm hoping to make my car a 'prodrive' car too, at least most of it i guess. know any good place that sells prodrive decals (except rallygrafix.com)? i am actually looking at getting the STI front grille from subydude too - that'll finish off my car's look, but yes, i get the sideskirts first to make it look better.
did you do the install of your car's sideskirts yourself? fairly easy?
i'll be posting the pic of my car once i upgrade my pbase account today.
that meet sounds kewl! do post pics here again soon. and try to get a test drive on the STI....i did and that was a rush! :D
and good luck to both of us on our choice of wheels. like i said, right now i'm really liking the tarmac IIs more.

the 02 was totalled when I was going through a green light and a lady comming the other way "didn't see me" as she turned left... into me! Ouch.. But I was OK, but VERY mad...
The cat (that used to like car rides) was in the car with me on the front seat... He bounced off the airbag and landed back on the seat... He was shaken up and confused maybe even worse than I was...
I clenched all the muscles in my arms, legs, back and shoulders and kept myself off the airbag... Not on purpose, but because I saw a T100 all of a sudden turn in front of me... Not cool and a big Oh $hit... reaction...
But everything was OK, except I had to put my $4k in "mod" money towards the new wrx... I was sore and pissed, but I lived with just a scar on my shin so that OK I guess... The car did it's job quite well and that's why I have another one...
Not sure on the stickers... If I see some I will let you know... There is a guy who posted on the oficial silver thread like 2 days ago from prodrive (prodrive is in his username, [emailprotected] I think)and he has the sticker on his car, so ask him, hopefully he can hook you up...
Side skirts are a piece of cake. 15 minutes for the whole job... off with black, on with silver... You have to unscrew on screw on the front of the skirt (front wheel well) that turn 90 degrees and then you have to "pull" it out as it was stuck on both my skirts, but it didn't break, and went back in... Under the skirts there are 6 of those plastic pop riviets that you just pry the centers out of and then pull the rest out... Once you have done that then there are 6 more plastic push in bits that pop right off when you pull the skirt off... The just reverse the process and you are all set...
I will post pics as soon as I have them...
I'm going to go Tarmac IIs as I want the "prodrive look" even if I can't afford it... Still out on the muffler though as I love the scoobysport sound on all the clips I have heard over the prodrive, but I have yet to hear either in person...
Ben
Oh yeah, I'm thinking of this bumper and skirts after a while too:

but I did just get fog light covers in today that I will put on as soon as I get the STi stickers off...
Ben
Oh yeah, I'm thinking of this bumper and skirts after a while too:

i can imagine how pissed u were that day...but the important thing is you didn't get injured bad. it's really hard that when one tries to be as careful as possible on the road, there are others that are just the exact opposite :(
tnx for the sticker tip, and the side skirt assembly instructions - i'll be going that direction pretty soon.
btw, just got a call from my parts specialist and he says he got my Prodrive exhaust! and i'm having it installed tomorrow morning, whoo! just in time for our TSD Road Rally tomorrow evening - alright! i do hope it works out fine :D
i'll post pics - i got my pbase acct. upgraded already.
what kind of bumpers/skirts are those? are they STI-specific ones? they look real sweeet! maybe i should get the STI side skirts instead...hmmm..... but those will sure look good on your WRX!

Oh, and jacobsen, don't quote me on it because I can't find the thread that I read it in, but I'm pretty sure the Tarmac IIs are also designed to fit over the STi brakes. So if you do wind up with one down the road, buying those wheels now shouldn't cause any problems.

Speaking of swapping trunks, if there was anyone with a pristine trunk lid in the Seattle area and has a wing/trunk from a black 2004 WRX, I would consider swapping for my new (purchased today) WRX STi trunk lid and wing.
Either that or I think I will just order the non-Sti parts and install it myself. I wonder how hard it is to move the emblems and lock over...

relatively easy - but that clip that holds the lock in place are a pain at first! and of course the tension bars, but putting them back is much easier.
i'll be on the lookout for some WRXs here with the stock wing and i'll point em to ya if i find em. :D

Those are the burn up skirts and that is the thread I borrowed them from... I like that look a lot... The STi skirts are very similar, they just don't stick out so far... The burn up kit's skirts have been described as "running boards" to give you an idea...
And the Tarmac IIs DO clear the STi breaks... So Says scooby dude's web site and they cost $650 for a set so that is what I'm going to get unless I win the lottery and go with P1s, but that is highly unlikely...
