SRT USA - 2nd car for the remainder of 2003???

Anyone hear if SRT USA is going to field a team to replace the tragic loss of Mark and Roger or are they going to concentrate on Ramana for the remainder of 2003???
Also, what happened to Ramana @ MFR???

Ramana rolled onto his door Friday night. He had to wait some 10 minutes or so until some spectators happened along and pushed it back onto the road.
For Maine, Subaru's second car was Tom McGeer and Howard Davies. No word yet on what they'll do for the rest of the season...

I'd love to see Paul Chionere, Frank/Dan Sprongl or someone like that take the open seat @ SRT USA. I think they'd compliment Ramana well. :D

Presonally, I have seen nothing really great from Paul Chionere. I know he is a multi-champion in Open class BUT those wins were in an era where the full support of Hyundai was baking them and was the ONLY Mfg. in the series. I won't even get into the fact about how far away from the street Tiburon was from the SCCA version of the car. (AWD, turbo etc.) I have seen Paul race many times at Rim and it was clear it was a superior funded car with a decent/good driver combo.
As much as I hate to say it, I think they need to get another very talented PRO driver from oversees. (UK preferably) While D.Higgins is very good in the EVO, there are some other hotshot guys that could put the STi on the podium and would be a beneficial learning tool/teamate for Ramana.

Hmmm, I like that! Paul knows the series, is a fantastic driver, and a great guy. Watching his success at MFR and his incredible drive at STPR to a podium finish overall- after mechanical problems really reinforced what a great driver he is. He is always smooth, smart and fast.
And the Hyundai team, while factory backed, certainly didn't approach the level of support that the Sube's and Mitsu's have. Paul doesn't have any more plans for this season; the car will probably have to go back to Hyundai soon.

I don't think I'd agree that Paul rode the coattails of Hyundai. Even the last couple of years he's still put up a good fight in a car that was run on a fraction of the budget of Sub/Mit. He's managed to place third at STPR and Maine (actually, tied for 2nd) this year, and he's funding this mostly out of his own pocket without even major privateer financing like Tim O'Neil. Plus, he's already got the image that Subaru looks for, clean-cut and charismatic. There are SOME benefits to having John Buffum as your mentor and father-in-law...
Mark Utecht is a good, consistent driver, fourth overall in the championship in a Gp N car! But, I'm not sure he's got the makings of a factory driver. Subaru/Prodrive expects a lot more from their drivers than fast driving. There's a reason that these are big shoes to fill...
My vote goes for...Andrew Havas! Can you convince Subaru to change their colors to day-glow Orange? ;)
Seriously, though, since Milner's been suspended, and Subaru will be looking for experience to complement Lagemann's youth, Mark Higgins is going to be very high on the list of hopefuls. There's just not enough experience to draw from in the US. They may also bring in one of the second-string WRC drivers, like Toshio Arai.

Paul Eklaund should be filling in the seat. He's probablly the most competative on a budget Open Class Subaru driver out there. He is probablly one of the greatest guys I've ever met too. Plus he Tested with Prodrive when SRT USA was just starting to come of age.

Paul Chionere is no slouch

For those that want to poke fun at or make comments about Paul (As I did before this year) take a good look at what he has done this year. First off remember that they no longer have factory support and are running last years car. Next lets take a look at what happened at STPR.
Stage 1, problems with the gearbox/diff and is pretty much runing on Fwd. 20th fastest
Stage 2, still suffering, 21st fastest
Stage 3, still suffering, again 21st fastest
Stage 4, still suffering, 14th fastest
After the first 4 stages only 16th overall, but now they've got the problem fixed.
After all was said and done he battled his way back up to 3rd overall, taking either 2nd or third fastest stage times for the rest of the rally(Expect one stage).
Then he came to maine and tied for second overall with the other factory supported Mitsu, second only to David Higgins.
I never was a big fan of Thumper, especially since for years they were the only factory team in town. But after taking a look at how he's doing this year, you can't tell me the boy doesn't have some talent.....
Sorry to be OT for so long.
I've heard nothing about what they plan to do, but I agree that I'd love to see the Sprongl boys make a return to rally.
Keith

It would definitely be easy to put the word out to all the good UK drivers or someone else on the world rally scene but I feel that SRT USA should give North American drivers the chance to compete and show what they've got.
If SRT USA goes with a "foreign" driver I'd day Miggins or Tapio would rawk. :D Perhaps Barbara Armstrong... :p
I think Paul is a good fit because of what jprowland said. I think he'd be a good spokesperson for Subaru @ rally events.
I don't think Utect fits the bill. I guess I'm biased against him because he second guessed my time control team's calculations @ Sno*Drift '03.  j/p
He's good but I dont' think he's good enough yet.
How 'bout our very own Subie Gal??? :D

You guys know anything about Patrick Riccard (Spelling) of Canada?
| jprowland | 08-08-2003 11:41 AM |
Pat Richard is to busy to commit to Subaru USA. He is already running 2 full seasons, the Canadian championship in Open class (which he will probably win), and the WRC championship in Group N (which he probably will not :) ).
Next year, well, I think he would probably prefer to stay in Canada. The events there are more fun, even if the competition isn't as high (there are only a handful of serious contenders for the championship). Plus, Subaru of Canada is the same team that's supporting his WRC venture, so if he loses one he probably loses both.

FWIW, Mark Utecht has always said is too old, bald, and arthritic to ever be considered for a factory ride (read SpecialStage.com). He's just likes to rally - a lot. He even shows up at the local rally-x's with his group n car.

From a marketing point of veiw, they would best off by getting big name rally drivers to do one event each.
Stig B. at Ojibwe!!!!!!!!!!!!
Petter at Wild West!!!!!!!!!!!!
Toshi A. at LSPR!!!!!!!!!
Paul C is a damn good choice, smooth and seldom crashes, and fast.
I think Ramana is doing a great job. I've been impressed with him, especially in NZ.

They should do it for atleast one event. When Carl Merrill passed away in 1999 they had Stig Blomqvist come and run his car at Maine. It was a great day in US rallying.

Next year's WRC rule about the 3rd driver should make someone available. Colin's been in a Subaru before. I may even travel to more events to see that.

There's no way that a big name WRC driver like Colin McRae would come over and contest the SCCA series.
