The story of my painted rims...(LOTS OF PICS)

AND HOW YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!!
Alright, the first thing you need to do is go down to your local auto parts store and pick up a 2 cans of Duplicolor wheel paint. A can of the color you want (in my case Graphite) and a can of clear. Don't worry about buying more b/c we got 5 coats on all four wheels out of the color and two good ones of clear.
THIS IS AN ALL DAY PROJECT!
So the first thing you need to do is tape off what you dont want to get the paint on.

I personally masked off the lip and the weight and left it the stock color.

Here they are after two coats of color: (allow about 15 minutes between coats for the paint to become tacky)

And an up close after five coats:

Now, I had to go home to get some dinner and allow some time for the paint to set before doing the clearcoat, but on the way home...this happened:

It was just about dark, so I had to wait for my dad to come pick me up and we had to change the tire after we ate. So around 9pm, we came back up with a lug wrench and an 8ft steel bar to use as leverage to get off the tire which had been impact wrenched on there (which I don't recommend doing at high pressure until you're sure the rim won't be coming off for a while and have access to an IW when it does come off). Here's my dad and brother helping me change the tire:

So now on my drive back to my friends garage, I accomplished looking like a complete ass, with my noisy exhaust, hubless steelies, and now the newest addition of, a doughnut tire.

The whole situation also inspired this redneck pic (with the rhino-lined lawn mower, 67' Bronco, an atv, garden cart, and sweet hood decal):

So at around 9:30pm we finally spray the first coat of clear. So now I had some time to kill so I found a can of chrome spray paint and went to town on my engine bay. Before anyone says anything, I don't care and I think it's funny, NOT cool. :D

Here's some close ups of my custom caps:

ouch i like the color thoguh, my buddy does a damn good job doing these things so im gonna let him do it but im gonna go with somewhat of a bronze tint
| Local_Skater | 09-04-2006 01:30 PM |
I also made some custom center caps and polished up the new lugs, which I later decided against:

After about an hour, we sprayed the second coat of clear and had some time to kill. So we went after a rabbit, which had been tearing up the garden, with a flashlight, two well trained dogs, and a pellet gun. We thought this would take up enough time for us to be able to peel off the masking, but it turns out, from the time we got to the garden, to the time the rabbit was dead was about 25seconds. I refrained from taking a picture, b/c I didn't really want to do it in the first place...but they were gonna do it no matter what, so I went with them. So another hour of polishing the bronco's wheels goes by, I we finally peel off the masking.

THE FASTER YOU PEEL IT, THE BETTER!
We learned this the hard way, b/c as we peel it, some chunks get ripped off past were the lip was, and looked horrible. So now the fun part came...
It was about one in the morning and now we had to bust out the razor blades and exacto-knives and bring the paint line out to the second lip. (The most tedious process I have ever been through!) Here I am hard at work:

Remember to be careful, like I wasn't:

o after that, was done, we finally pulled the car back in the garage at about 2:30am:

And we finally began to put the rims back on! :disco:

So finally, at about 3:15am, we finished cleaning up, and pulled the car out of the garage. :)

And at 3:30am, I realized that this was the most beautiful thing, I have ever seen:

So, $10, a blown tire, a dead rabbit, a cut finger, 13 hours of my life, and a lot of work later this is what the car looks like:

and it was totally worth it! :) :disco:
I put a lot of work into this thread for you guys, so please keep negative comments to yourself! :)

more pics of the bronco lol sorry i have been a fan of those old broncos and had a 77 before. by the way wheels look good i am thinking about doing the same thing with the same color

+1 for the old bronco!!
| turbokonejo | 09-04-2006 11:11 PM |
Good job man. I never really like that clear they sell for the wheels. Didnt you see it turn white for a sec when you first spray'd it on. I feel like it changes the color. I did a set of white 18''. Rattle can them bronze and when I went to put that clear it looked like poop so I didnt clear them. I was selling them anyways.
| imprezawrx1212 | 09-04-2006 11:18 PM |
^^ agree I did that with my calipers... it seems so flow out though and dissapear alittle bit.
I was thinking of doing this in a couple of weeks since the weather tis starting to get sort of crappy,, and since I have 2 sets of rex wheels anyway...

That looks really good. I like how you left the lip silver. When I have time I may do this to my stock rims...
I know this sounds stupid, but what does the clear coat do and why do you peel it off?

mine are just a tad bit darker, but look pretty much the exact same, I didnt do anything with the centercaps, but they are a graphite color with an unpainted lip, I love them. Looks good man, and yes, it is a very long and tedious process

Rabbit does taste like chicken. At least the big fat pet store rabbits do.

you shouldnt use an impact wrench to put on lug nuts unless you have one of those torque breaker nuts. you could very easily strip off the lugnut or crack the rim.

Theres a reason I left the weight and lip unpainted. ;) So it wouldn't get torn up when the tires get changed.

looks good.. but no prep work?
| Local_Skater | 09-07-2006 10:35 PM |
Forgot to include the prep work part. After you tape off the lip and all that, sand really well with 400 grit sandpaper. Make sure to get all the bends and curves so the paint doesnt chip off. I also power washed off the brake dust before taping.
