Dude, you can't put a sunroof in an 02 unless you wanna seriously compromise the structural integrity of the car. You see that "bump" kinda thing that runs through the middle of your roof? Right by the dome light? That's a rudimentary 'roll-bar'. That's why a sunroof was never offered from the factory. jmarkle can get a suroof because the 04s are built differently.
bobby d 03-18-2005 03:23 PM

Don't do it man. They tend to make the car, unless the car was designed from the factory with one, very flexible and not stiff at all. Not to mention that most aftermarket ones will eventually start to leak.
WRXFan420 03-18-2005 08:38 PM

Forget the sunroof, get the Spec C Roof Vent.

I had a very nice Webasto sunroof installed in my old 04 WRX wagon. The thing was huge, with one-touch open & close, two pre-sets and auto close. I loved that sunroof until I started to drive the car. That's when all the rattling and squeaking began. I pulled the headliner, and the center roof stiffener had been cut out to install the sunroof. Luckily, the car got hit and I traded it in on my 05 WRX sedan w/ premium package.
DoctorNick 03-18-2005 09:59 PM

I know 2 guys with 02 WRXs that had them done. One goes by Newscooby on the board. he used to live in chicago and never had problems with his. I'm pretty sure you can do it without compromising anything. That 'stiffener' on the top of the car is a very small flimsy bar.
AlbanianImpreza 03-19-2005 12:03 AM

idk man i heard they can be done and itll look good, but as others had sed, you wanna risk the chance? crashes happen daily round here, its crazy, but do what ya like, YOU SAFE DRIVER YOU! ; )
02R6 03-19-2005 12:38 AM

I wish I got paid everytime this topic has been brought up.

But I digress, I had a Webasto unit (like the one mentioned above) installed about a year and a half/two years ago and I love it; use it whenever I can think of an excuse to. I took the car to Mid-Ohio last season and had a blast lapping at speed, with a full face Arai on (read: no interference with the headliner), while noticing not a hint of added flex, twist, creaks, rattles, whatever.

My one and only gripe is the volume with which the motor operates when opening and closing.

If you want the sunroof and have the coin, do it. If you're worried about it, don't do it. Simply put. In the end, it doesn't matter what any of us think.

thanx!
thank you all for your input! thats all i was looking for really, pros and cons to getting it done.

There was a thread about this over on imprezawrxsti in the exterior forum and I posted a bunch of pics and thoughts about my Hebasto (not Webasto) aftermarket sunroof on my 05' STI. Unfortuanately I'm not a big poster so i'm not allowed to post the URL until I hit post number 10 :-D But you can PM me if you want the link or track down the thread yourself.

Um, No. It is Webasto.

I know what he's talking about, the way the "W" in the Websato logo is designed makes it look like a "H."

For example:

anything that does not have it stock installed ur lookin for probs.
FWD WRX 05-23-2005 11:14 PM

i wouldn't do it.. they're bound to leak sooner or later
eltrouble 05-23-2005 11:31 PM

i wouldn't do it. compromises structural integrity too much. plus i never found much of a use for it myself.

although if i were to put anything up there, it would be the sweet Spec C roof vent. :D
AlbanianImpreza 05-23-2005 11:33 PM

as most have sed and ill say again, too many probs for a few yrs of fun unless u intend on keeping ur car for just a few yrs.
pleue 05-24-2005 10:21 AM

Statements like these are usually founded by experiences with aftermarket sun/moonroofs installed in the 80s. That and fact that statements like these are usually made by people who don't have aftermarket sunroofs installed their cars.

so then plz expose us to the new aftermarket sunroofs, that will actually keep the structural integrity of the roof sound. and hey if you do find one that does it please, tell me about it and where i can get it. ;)
02R6 05-26-2005 03:12 AM

Of course I don't have any hard facts for you. My car hasn't been placed on some kind of rig or anything to check chassis integrity. All I can give you is testimony from personal experience and something tells me that just isn't good enough for you. And, really, why should it be?

Let me ask you this, though, if you're worried about what's going to happen in the event of a rollover, do you really think the addition of a moonroof is going to make said rollover less bad? Also, what kind of driving are you doing "round here" that you're worried about a rollover? Do you really think that "rollbar" is going to save you? Finally, do you think the removal of the bar and the addition of the moonroof is going to add noticable chassis degradation/flex when doing whatever it is the owner plans to do?

This is simple, for anybody thinking of having an aftermarket moonroof installed, if you think it's going to be detrimental to your health and/or the performance of your vehicle don't do it. Or, get one installed and then install a cage. That's all there is to it.

All I'm saying is don't knock the aftermarket moonroof installation if you haven't been through the experience yourself.
AlbanianImpreza 05-26-2005 12:39 PM

ok sounds good to me, u choose a lil show over a lil bit more safety, and its understandable u drive normal feel normal, but theres always something that can frick u over. but i see what ur saying. im not knocking the idea, but for me and others the idea of removing safety from something thats fast and can kill you isnt too good.
02R6 05-26-2005 01:05 PM

I completely understand what you're saying. And it makes total sense. (I'm also glad we're on the same page now.) In the end I guess I just figured it a risk worth taking given the kind of driving I do; my car rarely sees the odd road course and I keep things very tame on the streets. That's not to say the unspeakable can't happen but, again, it's a risk I consider worth it given the enjoyment I receive from it.
AlbanianImpreza 05-26-2005 01:16 PM

yeh its nice to have a sunroof, but then again the winding backroads and dirt roads i have around here that are near steep hills and such are a constant reminder that my spirited driving needs that extra insurance. id get the roof scoop though, theyre more badass.
4wdrift 05-27-2005 11:57 AM

Uhh, guys? Have you had the headliner out? Have you seen the factory roof with the sun roof? + or - the sun roof, the tiny little folded bit sheet metal is not gonna make a difference. Besides, it is not a part of the unibody construction.

Go for the roof if you want it.
