Those with an '05 STi please look at your windshield part 1

NewShockerGuy 11-12-2004 01:11 PM

Those with an '05 STi please look at your windshield
When I bought my 05' STI it had a mesh sort of black screen on the top of the windshield... Needless to say some idiot in a truck cracked my windshield with a flying rock... I got it replaced today and I asked 13 times is it the SAME OEM windshield as I had... I was told yes, yes , yes..etc

I get it home and there is NO black mesh screen tint on the top of the windshield....

Does anyone know where I can get this or if I got a different windshield than what I was supposed to get?

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks for the help,
-Nigel

Did you specify the year? They might've given you OEM glass, but not for your year. I believe the 05's are the first year for that mesh. I'm still not sure what it does.

Get the car tinted with a front strip? You probably didn't get an '05 OEM replacement, it should have come with the strip in place. An aftermarket tint front strip will offer more coverage anyway.
qbbraveheart 11-12-2004 01:18 PM

on my fathers Navigator he had to get his windshield replaced...thats what he gets for tailgating a tractor trailer
well I went to go get it replaced for him...the old one had a solid black strip(almost like a tint strip) the new one had that strip but it was like a black mesh screen
I asked them why its not the same and they said if you were to get the OEM windshield you'd be paying out the ass....my father only paid $365 for the windshield

Being in the tinting and graphics business, you got a good thing! Reason being, is now you can tint the window from the inside. With the dot matrix found in the '05 windshield, the tint will cloud up when you tint over it (maybe not right away, but it will). most window tint installer's will just put black vinyl on the inside instead of risking a poor product reputation. Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than good.

Here's what I should have had but no longer have it....arg!
Arg...

I signed the papers already but wasn't able to look at it until the guy left...

Should I call the company that replaced the window or should I call the dealer? It was done at the dealer but the people that replaced the windshield brought the window to the dealer and HE did all the work... dealer just put new inspection stickers on the car...

EDIT:
Other than the mesh tint are there any difference in the windshield... IE: spec wise this is the same other than the mesh? I did specify the year, even gave them the VIN and they replied back to me we don't need that... I asked 13 time in the 5 phone calls that I had to them does this have the black tint on the TOP... yes, yes yes yes yes... everytime... I think I am more mad at being lied to.

Scott:
How much would tint stip where that USED to be cost?

Thanks,
-Nigel

Nigel,

Don't freak out lol (I know I would too). That strip is to help block out the sun when it is glaring in between the roof and the mirror and isn't blocked by the sun visors. I think it looks nice also but if you ever plan on installing a Radar detector up there it would be better not to have it. I am sure you got the OEM glass from a MY04 wrx/Sti and not the 05 glass.

Anyway, it is mostly for reducing glare from the sun but I agree, they should have told you what you were getting. Good luck.

Food for thought:

Some non-OEM windshields are stronger/better quality. I know a lot of members on here have said how weak/fragile the Subaru windshields are. Some, including mine, even cracked on there own. You can usually get the tint strip for ~$20 installed...
Sloman 11-12-2004 06:02 PM

Check with Motor Vehicle first before you put any tint on windshield (unless Joe-Around-Corner Shop does your inspection). In NJ, any aftermarket tint on windshield or driver and passenger glass is reason for rejection. Unless, of course, it fools the fools. ;)
lowendfrequency 11-12-2004 06:27 PM

the strip is there to prevent the dome light from glaring into oncoming traffics eyes. The reason it is a mesh on the 05 instead of a flap on the 04 is because there are no maplights on the 05 models. If you are that concerned I would have a similarly shaped peice of black vinyl applied there.

i dont see what the big deal is. its a small piece. i may be mildly upset if i got a new windshield and the old one used to have the tinting all the way across and the new one didnt. other than that, who gives an eff
OneManArmy 11-12-2004 07:07 PM

I think he's probably more pissed that they lied to him and at the thought that he might have gotten a window not quite up to OEM standards or what not.

I don't think it's about the black stuff.

I had Harmon Auto Glass put a new windshield in my 2000 Grand Cherokee. I specifically asked him if it was OEM, and he said they order it straight from Jeep. I paid $156 with installation. No insurance involved.

To the original poster, I can understand why you would be mad about it, but just get a tint strip on the top. It helps a lot when the sun is low and it looks better. I paid $20 for mine.

I don't know where you got that information from. The strip is there to reduce the glare from the sun since the sun visors don't slide out to cover this area and possibly to reduce the glare from the maplights. Since when does the dome light create "glare" for oncoming traffic? In addition since when does it only glare in the space between the mirror and the roof? I think you are misinformed or you don't understand what is being discussed.

The flap on MY04 is to reduce glare to the DRIVER when the map lights are used. Subaru.com shows the MY05 with maplights.
ChrisL2 11-12-2004 07:56 PM

I got mine replaced recently. Didn't get that stripe. Anyways, the people that replaced the windshield put the tint strip on it for free. Looks nice. Tint strip also looks better since it doesn't go across the matted pattern.
Fijimunkii 11-12-2004 08:01 PM

I'd actually prefer the stock glareblocker opposed to a tint strip. Dunno, the tint strip just feels kinda ghetto.

Unless it says SUBARU :disco:

Why do you want it to say SUBARU? In case you forget what kind of car you drive?

haha i would love to know where you find stuff like this out
dr_wheel 11-12-2004 09:05 PM

Heh... I wish I didn't have the black strip so that I could mount my radar detector up there. I'll trade you. :(
subiekid 11-12-2004 09:17 PM

When I got my tint they said for an extra 10 bucks they were put a strip on the windsheild.
ghostfoot7 11-12-2004 09:45 PM

I'd just ask them to cover the cost of the tint strip.. that way you can stay on good terms and they'll probably be happier to give you back a little. I doubt they'd reorder another windshield and then remove yours and install that one.... No way man.
I guess you have to ask yourself whats it worth?

I agree unless it's one of those strips that's composed of tiny black dots, like my girlfriend's RX8 has.. (I know it's more bling than my ol' rex, but ironically, she loves my car better - mind you, she gets about 10 mpg on premium ouch!)
Anyway, I think that if you can get the "tiny dots" kind of strip, it'd look way way cooler than what the picture you posted shows... IMO.

Check out the RX8 strip... way cooler!

Like the rally car, just looks really cool.

The only other difference is that the STi comes w/ shaved glass. It's lighter than the standard Impreza.

supermarkus 11-13-2004 12:24 AM

I believe only the rear glass is thinner. I've taken some pretty tough shots on my windshield already. Nigel, relax. You worry way too much.
NewShockerGuy 11-13-2004 01:00 AM

Thanks for all the replies guys :-p

I know I worry too much about stupid stuff like my car... and don't have any other worries in life, but it really makes me mad that someone can tell me that yes yes, this is correct and you will get this, but end up getting something else and or being lied to. If I ran my business like that I would have very dissatisfied customers...

I am going to call them monday complain and see if they will buy my little tint strip for the windshield... :-)

Question, do they put that on the inside or outside? I see some people have the vinal stuff that people put on their trucks around here to make it seem like their windshield is a lot smaller in height... is it better to go with that or tint? If they put the tint on the inside what do they do about the rear view mirror? Do they have to take that off or cut around it?

Thanks,
-Nigel

use 3M heavy duty double sided tape on the suction cups for your radar detector problem.

regular comprehensive insurance covers like 2-3 windshields a year, i know i dont pay to have my windshield replaced. just say it is pitted too badly and it makes sun glare more intensified. i can call anyone, and my insurance takes care of it. maybe this is just a massachusetts insurance thing i dont know.

I have my '04 with a tint strip and it doesn't look ghetto at all. It's just a matter of going to a good tinter. And the guys are right not having the mesh is a good thing. The shop probably didn't have the part number for an '05 STI windshield and ordered an '04 for you.

What problem are you referring to? It mounts just fine. The problem is that you don't want to mount the detector behind the factory 05 dotted glass because it will reduce it's overall effective range.
gerbs 11-13-2004 11:35 PM

eww that strip = poo if you have a v1 :(

i'd be happy if it was gone
