I love Brock Yates

From this month's Car and Driver:
I realize this is blasphemy, but a few weeks ago I tried to watch a NASCAR race being run at Talladega. I lasted about five minutes before terminal boredom overtook me. It appeared to be nothing more thn a high-speed freeway commute--a mob of luridly painted, identical lumps of metal loping at 180 mph around the banking, fender to fender, nose to tail. Knowing the scenario would surely devolve into a multicar demolition derby that would thrill the goobers in the grandstands, I turned off the set to later learn that this time it was Jimmie Johnson who triggered the eight-car melee.
There was a day when you could identify a NASCAR Ford, Chevrolet, or Dodge and they actually looked like "stock cars." Now they are pod machines, slick on the outside but still powered by the same Neanderthal carbureted pushrod V-8s that have been under their hoods for half a century.
If this is real auto racing, then the WWF ought to be part of the Olympics.
I can't wait to read the hate mail in the February issue! :p

As much as I dislike Yates I have to agree with him on this.
I can only imagine how much better NASCAR would be if it were closer to the Australian V8 Supercar series...

his articles are the only reason i used to subscribe to c&d. his books are great too. like anyone, sometimes he's wrong - but even when he's wrong it's still good reading. and usually darn funny.

i just finished his book "Against Death and Time" (about the disasterous 1955 racing season)...pretty good read, although i dont always like his writing style...jumps around a LOT...his book on the cannonballs is decent too

That's Nascrap or Nascarp
I have two red-neck buddies who LOVE Nascarp and the two of them and I always get into it. Their only argument against Rally racing is that the two guys in the same car thing means they're gay! heheheh. Straight.....left.......straight......left....straight....same left.....

FTW!... 'cept the Aussie series somehow needs to inject more than 2 'brands' into the mix... a sea of Holden vs. Ford. If there's any 'other', they're not easy to spot.
But, yep, for 'the way the domestic series should be', they got it right.

It is once or twice a year when they turn left and right... and Boris makes his presence felt. I'll usually watch the road course events, but that's it.
+1 for the Aussies.
+2 for DTM.

Ho hum,
Another NASCAR bashing thread, imagine that.
It seems to me that a lot of people are more invested in hating NASCAR, then loving another form of racing. If you don't like it, change the channel.
He sounds like my grandmother when we used to go watch F1 at Kyalami. You know, the cars all look the same, you only go for the accidents, why do you want to hangout with those redneck car fans etc, etc.

Your first mistake was putting F1 and Nascar in the same statement... :alien:

You know why I like Brock Yates?
He reads Internet forums... well, select ones. Specifically, he's on Corner-Carvers.com... and he recognized my screen name when I was introduced to him at one of the One Lap stops this year. I thought that was way cooler than what he thinks of NASCAR. :)

I see the difference in your grandma and Brock being that he is educated in the sport as a whole and in specific. Not that Brock is right or wrong about NASCAR but his view is at least an educated one.

Brock's book about the Cannonball was awesome.
I also like how he coined the term "sh itbox" in reference to the overly-hyped first small American car (can't remember the name) to take on the Japanese economy fleet.

you say that like it's easy to change the channel to another one with racing on it that is not the 16hr/day nascar programming that speed has most of the year

God help us Speed is adding more NasCrap by running more ARCA races. I'm slowly gravatating to OLN for the love of pete. Rally America, A1 world races, baja 1000, paris to dakar. Real racing that you used to find on Speed!
| Rally_wgn | 12-13-2005 12:38 PM |
oh and pittspilot nascrap is on at least two channels already as well as two network channels so how is switching channels gonna help me avoid the most boring racing series this side of curling?

OLN has Baja 1000 coverage? I saw 500 coverage on OLN and 1000 coverage on NBC this weekend. I thought the NBC coverage was really good for condensing everything down to a 1 hour show.
